@TallSimon@mstdn.ca @koen_hufkens@mastodon.social I saw something similar done for a web developer position. It looked like the application page (linked from one of the big job boards. Probably Monster; this was well before Indeed or ZipRecruiter) was broken, just a blank white page. In the end, I had to use curl to get the application. It basically filtered out people who lacked even the bare minimum curiosity required to check the source to figure out why/how this mission critical page was seemingly broken.

@argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org @AncTreat5358@lgbtqia.space @linuxgal@techhub.social This was kind of a hold over from the days of 78s (rpm, when records span faster, and shattered if dropped lol), which didn't have nearly as long a run time, so they would often come in literal albums (like a photo album basically) and you might have 5 or 6 discs for a single piece of classical music, for example.

@miss_rodent@girlcock.club @foolishowl@social.coop @mhoye@cosocial.ca The problem there is when the techy person in the group's highest qualification is being the one that knows the most about computers in a group of largely non-technical people, but knowing just enough to get yourself (and entire org/community) in trouble is a very common level of expertise, lol. That's not to throw any shade in their direction; we've all been at that level at some point, but you don't know what you don't know even with the best of intentions. I do agree with the sentiment though, but it's hard not to remember all the times I was definitely not qualified for what I'd taken it upon myself to do (like self-hosting client websites, or writing a custom CMS from scratch (I did have a lot of fun doing it though lol))

@miss_rodent@girlcock.club @foolishowl@social.coop @mhoye@cosocial.ca Yeah I don't disagree. I'm convinced the majority of enterprise software is only just barely less slapped together than most voting machines. I'm sure we've all experienced working at a company and having to keep two browsers to run various outdated web portals, some of which were probably still using ActiveX well past its sell by date.

@welshpixie@mastodon.art I haven't really had a problem with any printer on Linux. CUPS has handled them all out of the box, from a Y2k era Laserjet to a more modern Canon photo printer. Personally, I'd just buy from a brick and mortar with a 7-30 day exchange policy, so in the off chance you do have trouble, you can just bring it back and jump to another brand.

@rajelaran@oldbytes.space I'm in love with this. It looks like a Jolly Rancher. Nostalgia aside, I always dug crystal clear glossy cases over the far more common (well, back when this was more of a thing) frosted ones... and I suddenly want nothing more in life than a Game Boy Light (because Indiglo) with a fully transparent case like that see-thru phone from the 90s. I must make it real.

@thelastpsion@oldbytes.space I've definitely heard of/read other examples, but there's one in particular in the form of a blog post about a small company whose IT infrastructure was built by one guy who was hired on in early days, and he worked there for years. Everybody at the company thought he was a genius, because he was single-handedly keeping the infrastructure afloat. Of course he was also the only person with access to anything, nothing was documented, and he left the company without any kind of handover, and the new guy had to decipher his complicated network of highly esoteric solutions that might be clever on a home network, but ate batshit insane as corporate network infrastructure. If I can find that link again, I will definitely send it your way. Who knows how much of it was strictly true or embellished or entirely fabricated (you mean... people like on the internet!?) but it was very entertaining, and you just know these people are out there, especially in the 90s and 00s.

Though that is kind of relevant to my life anyway, although in the off chance that a client's website goes down, it's generally a problem at the hosting company and out of my control. I basically just bring my laptop wherever I go though, just in case.

These 3 items represent that entirety of a $100 USD gift card lmao. Okay, to be fair I also paid the $20 shipping with the gift card, but still. Guitar repair is not a cheap activity.

I decided in the end to get a single 2ft length of fretwire instead of 4ft, because my plan is to just do the problem areas rather than a full refret (for reference, 4ft is just enough to do an entire guitar), and that allowed me to get the set of 6 grits of this 3M flexible polishing cloth, rather than just the couple single sheets I could squeeze into the budget.

Worst case, fretwire itself is pretty inexpensive, so if I need more I can just make a trip down to Solo Music and spend <$20 for another 2ft length. Anyway, I should moat definitely forget all about this and get to work on something somebody will pay me for lol

@Two9A I do have a certain fondness for PHP, specifically for much older versions when it was an objectively trash language lmao. But that's definitely nostalgia more than anything. PHP 4 was one of the first languages I did any serious programming with. Building database queries using basic string manipulation and feeding them into mysql_query() (not even mysqli lol) builds character... in the same way that pointing a loaded weapon directly at your foot builds character, sure, but I had a great time doing it 😅 Modern PHP is fine, I guess. Lol

My s/o's employer uses Google Workspace for everything. She's currently working on a Doc, and it just told her she maxed out the character limit, and that she would need to "remove content." It's less than 200 pages.

Did Google forget to turn off an April Fools joke or something?

@cybervegan Yeah that's exactly what mine needs. I've got the replacement belt and have it partially disassembled, I've just been trying to work up the interest and motivation to finish the job lol. I got the T610 specifically because the cartridges do still exist, and in generic form as well, and this one included nearly full cartridges installed plus a set of spares. Who knows how long they'll continue to be available though 🤷

@ocean They've been doing this for years. Super shit registrar. I also wholly recommend Porkbun. Over all, a great user experience. Upsells are minimal, and mostly during checkout where they belong, and unlike GoDaddy, you can easily set multiple forwarding emails because they're not constantly trying to sell you a 365 subscription. I've got at least 20 domains with them spanning several years. I believe they were acquired at some point in that time, but it hasn't had any appreciable impact on my experience, except that they began offering .ca domains in the last couple years.

@deutrino@mstdn.io @yvan@toot.ale.gd @mhoye@cosocial.ca I'd hardly call it a debacle. I'm as against age verification laws (especially extremely stupid ones like those regarding operating systems), but the reality is that many distros are going to comply. Giving them a database field with which to do so is going to reduce the cost and complexity of doing so. The real debacle is the fact that people can't disagree on the internet without somebody getting death threats, doxxed, or swatted (well that and the fact that nobody to this very day can forgive systemd for existing).

I'm the kind of psycho that always considers the worst case scenario, and I probably shouldn't have kids because I would be an absolute basketcase. So anyway, parents, consider this a PSA:

I just had a fear confirmed by something a pediatrician on the internet said when asked for one thing they would do different knowing what they know now (I'm paraphrasing a video I've never seen but which was paraphrased to me lol). They said they would never let their child use a metal straw, because bad things happen when kids using metal straws fall down.

They went into just a bit more detail than I just did, and it made my spidey senses* go off immediately, so no thanks.

So uh, yeah. Use that information as you see fit.

*It turns out what I've always called "spidey senses" actually has a name: the cremasteric reflex. The more you know.

Of course the Win 10 start menu only got less performant and more annoying over time (not to mention web results always used Bing in MS Edge regardless of what your default browser may have been 😤).

@cybervegan This is a black and white laser actually. Colour inkjets are pretty much dead to me (this is a bald faced lie. I've got a DesignJet sitting in my office waiting to be fixed, but that's wide format so it doesn't count lol). In this case, basically I can tell that it tries to pick up the paper, but when it gets to the roller, nothing happens (when I open the tray, the top sheet has been visibly lifted up to, but not past, the roller). The user manual recommends cleaning the rollers, but the rollers are completely fine. I ended up on a thread on some forum where someone who'd been through this explained about a little lever that goes out of place, and doesn't even require disassembly to see or adjust, but when I looked at that spot on mine, that little white lever is just entirely not present. The last time I needed to print something, I plugged it in, printed the thing, and then unplugged it and put it on the floor in my office. So seeing as that part isn't sitting in the paper tray itself, I have to assume it's fallen deeper inside 🤷

I really don't like "SEO experts" who claim to be experts, but apparently can't handle building a form with the existing set of tools (a bloody WYSIWYG page builder, come on). If you install WPForms or Contact Form 7 on a WordPress install I maintain which already possesses form functionality (as evidenced by the contact form on the homepage), I promise you I will uninstall it.

UGH.

(for the record, I didn't hire this person and have had zero contact with them. I just logged in to the site I built for my brother (who recently asked for the login because he hired someone to do some ads) to confirm what I already knew to be the case, because this is just what these people do)
