@juergen_hubert @gatesvp @ced Which has been done! You have to put up with the model's capabilities being a couple years behind the state of the art, but then, if the state of the art can only be achieved by labor theft, maybe it shouldn't be the state of the art. https://www.engadget.com/ai/it-turns-out-you-can-train-ai-models-without-copyrighted-material-174016619.html

@shibacomputer I still feel like there was an obvious way Archive Team could've satisfied all parties in their tumblr scrape: they could have just not hosted the archive online. If someone wanted their blog, they'd have emailed Archive Team, who would have sent that blog, and only that blog, to that person.
I think I even mentioned this to Jason at the time, but never got a reply on Twitter...

@wizardneedsfood I think a good rule of thumb is that, when people are scared of communism, it's because their own fortunes are tied up in capitalism in ways that they aren't ready to reckon with
It's different if they think revolution is impossible, or that it has to look like the ones that happened in Russia or China, or all the communists they've personally encountered have been unserious people

Why do you think you could choose to be like that? What would make you do such a thing?
I remember times I've talked to police in response to actual crimes, which I thought at the time was a justified decision, if unfortunate. Now, seeing what ICE does, and where they get their staff, has me wondering if what I did was that much different from what that kindergarten teacher did, morally speaking.
Being a good person requires continuous effort to improve yourself, to hold yourself to your own standards. Bad people get that way because it's so easy. I've taken the easy way out before, and I suspect you have, too.
If you WANT to be nothing like them, good for you! If you think you ARE nothing like them, that's most likely wrong in a very simple sense, since you live in this terrible society; and believing means you're not going to wonder so much about what separates you from them, exactly.

@Ardubal@mastodon.xyz @praxeology@post.lurk.org I don't think it's correct to say that making the open source version is the only thing most engineers could do about it? If you can do that, you can also use some source-available but not open-source license, and deny the license to clients that are doing evil stuff

@hopeless @Firesphere "White knight" is incel terminology, you should unlearn it.
My true motivations are pretty simple. I agree with you about the importance of people taking control over their digital services. I want you to be less of an asshole about it, so that people will actually listen.

@hopeless @Firesphere "Sell people on" is a fairly common English-language idiom meaning you're trying to convince them of something, and "buying" or especially "buying into" the sale means they've changed their mind, to match your way of thinking.
You very clearly are trying to convince people to self-host, and you're very bad at it.

@hopeless @Firesphere Well, if you rent the server, those problems with AWS being down become problems with some other server provider being down.
This is not the greatest response if you're trying to sell people on self-hosting.

But that's not where we're at; food and housing and stuff are in surplus. The people in charge mostly don't give them away because, if they were the type of person who did that, they'd not have gotten the power to begin with

If it's a phone, same, but in any case, trusting whatever password generator you find on the app store isn't necessarily more secure than trusting a sketchy website.

@jimgar @hynek First person thinking is whenever "I think" something. When you want to have thought something, but you don't want to think it, you might ask an AI what it "thinks".
Of course, you're the one reading any meaning into the text, but you're pretending it's somebody else -- the grammatical "third person".
You could generalize this to the type of person who leans on "common knowledge" all the time, which, come to think of it, is something awful project managers do, too
