Imagine that it's 1925 and I am a clever, experienced mechanical engineer. I look around at the "tech" world of the time and notice some disturbing things:

- the rising power of literally fascist CEOs like Henry Ford
- What began as an inefficient, quirky novelty toy for rich people, the automobile, has become "normal" and started to dominate public space
- rising levels of fossil pollution
- the rising monopoly power of Oil companies
- dangerous levels of stock-market speculation
- brutal exploitation of people and environmental destruction in mining and rubber producing (mostly colonial) regions
- the use of debt to get less wealthy consumers to buy cars
- scores of innocent pedestrians injured or killed by automobiles
- urban planning that increasingly favors more expensive cars over other users of the streets
- declining sense of importance of shared forms of transportation like trolleys and trains

As an engineer, I look at all those rising issues and then I say:

"What we need is an Open Source Model-T Ford with some slightly better safety features."

In retrospect, that would seem like a pretty inadequate response.

Maybe we should stop calling them *Notifications* and instead refer to *Interruptions*.

"Working on some stuff so I've turned off interruptions for a while."

"Right on."

I made some more progress on my woody cargo trike today.

Still need to finish the brakes and rear wheel but it feels great to push it around the parking lot for a test ride.

We're happy to announce the next #permacomputing #berlin meetup with the https://endoflife.date project:

** Software life, death and resurrection **

on Sunday May 17th, 18h00
at xHain, Grünberger Str. 16

Project initiator Nemo will share how and why this archive tracking soft- and hardware life-cycles was started, grown and maintained.

We are happy about curious minds and discussions around the PermaComputing perspectives on digital life, death and undeath: everyone interested in any of these subjects on any level is cordially invited to join us.

The next Berlin #PermaComputing MeetUp:

L5: A Creative Coding Response to Permacomputing

with @exquisitecorp@merveilles.town

19. April 2026 at 16:00
- xHain hack+makespace -
Grünberger Str. 16

L5 is a creative coding library in the family of Processing languages, implemented in Lua with LÖVE. It attempts to reckon seriously with principles of permacomputing, including design and documentation for offline use, suitability for older hardware, design for longevity, and exposing the underlying infrastructure. After a brief presentation and discussion of the project, we'll discuss where it aligns and where it strays from permacomputing.

"The ambition to produce in quantity is dangerous because it deprives you of the enjoyment of being both a friend to your ideas and a friend to your materials. Materials have qualities which will speak if you listen. Let the artist go slowly; [s]he must give time and labor without counting."

Exciting to hear that my local, lovable but somewhat inconsistent men's Bundesliga football team, Union Berlin, has fired the head coach and installed Marie-Louise Eta as the new trainer. This is the first time a woman has been a head coach in men's Bundesliga history!

Man I thought I was dodging the bullet by not having a smart phone, but fuck, more friends and colleagues are finding a way to annoy the crap out of me via SMS.

Instead of sending nice coherent emails or calling to have a short discussion, they blast me with either epic-length SMS or streams of a half-dozen random half-thoughts in half-sentences. Each one zapping me with interruption from whatever I'm trying to do. It's almost never urgent or something related to something we're actively doing (like meeting up).

This is so disruptive and anxiety-driven and rude and unproductive. How do you people live like this!?

Does anyone know of a powerbank that has replaceable LiFePO4 batteries? I'd like to find something that's less disposable.

@doriane@post.lurk.org I use a Nokia E6 (vintage 2013). It was one of the last Symbian OS phones and it has a really nice OLED display and a Blackberry-style keyboard. The battery is replaceable (around €10 on ebay). It has WiFi and some kind of browser and email client but I never used it. It has a headphone jack and a rather crappy mp3 player but there are other apps you can install. The camera is not great but acceptable for my random needs. I only need to charge it every 7-10 days. It was made for 3-G which is now turned off most places so it reverts to 2-G (classic GSM). And 2G will be turned off a lot of places soon too. So if you go vintage, you might want to look for a phone with 4G which should last a lot longer. The Blackberry Q10 looks like a good option for keyboard lovers like me.

@ploum@mamot.fr But ironically, brands seem more meaningless now that they have since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Most big companies don't produce or develop their own products. They just call around to find whatever factory has the best (i.e. cheapest (i.e. most explotative)) conditions and send a PDF with a logo to slap on the side. (yes, I'm oversimplifying this but the basic notion is not far off)

@nautik It's similar to most trikes with two wheels in the front. There is quite heavy "headset" under the front box. It attaches to a crossbar that is just ahead of the line of the front axles which makes steering quite effortless and comfy¹. It is also, like a normal 2-wheeler, raked at a 4-5° backward angle so the wheels tilt slightly into the curve instead of resisting.

Another #slöjd / #sløyd solution. Somebody had a little accident with the gas burner and scorched the handle on one of our favorite cast-iron pans. I whittled, drilled and rasped a little stick some gardeners left in the neighborhood. (I think it was a hawthorn but I'm not 100% sure).

I dare say, it looks a bit nicer than the old one. #rustic #repair

@feld Hiding the damage and then pretending that we, as buyers, are not responsible for the ills of production is one of the essential dirty tricks of consumerism. But we all participate in this and when we literally buy into it, we are supporting it in a small but real way. It's uncomfortable and sometimes upsetting but there's no getting away from it.

@poni@post.lurk.org I will withhold opinions on distros but I like using xfce4 as a minimal desktop. It's very snappy, minimal, but not exotic and has no fancy schnick-schnack, animations or whatever. It was not so complicated to do a little customization for my needs and neuroses. I should say that it is in transition though from X11 to Wayland (the new fancy display system on Linux et al.) but it seems like the developers are close to stable there.

@ploum@mamot.fr It's been going on for a long time but the brand-centric worldview seems to have gotten worse. I get the impression, thanks especially to ad-based and influence-based social media forms, that many people have started to lose faith in learning about actual things. Instead, they develop a sad perspective that the only knowledge worth having is which brands are the most popular. Journalists seem especially susceptible - they seem to think that as reporters of the Zeitgeist they must always reference specific brands, especially platforms, instead of generic techniques or devices.

@feld You can get 5x as many cycles from the LiFePo ones. That's an 80% reduction in environmental damage, labor exploitation and toxic waste. And as a bonus it means I can potentially wait 10 years before I have to go through the tedium of battery shopping again. My share of the collective responsibility is pretty small in this case but it's not nothing and if I can reduce the damage and extend the life of the object, then I'm happy to do that even if it goes against the conventional wisdom a lot of us grew up with.

@feld @liaizon That's cool to hear that the hardware is holding up so well. But I am particularly interested in the LiFePo4 because their specific chemistry makes the batteries themselves last a lot longer than LiPo batteries. Lithium mining is a nasty business so I want to help minimize that damage.

@feld @liaizon The LiFePO4 batteries do come in the 18650 format yeah. But I think, given the slightly different voltages, it's best (and safest) to use a charging circuit tuned to LiFePO4 voltages and current limits. But nice to see that this one seems to support the fancy USB-C charging profiles. I know about cheap power banks but I want something that is built to last. Cheap often has consequences that I can't abide.
