After five years, The Digital Identity Event Horizon is published in full today: three problem statements, ten key findings, and dozens of recommendations across policy, protocol, legal, and social contexts. It's the largest research study in New Design Congress' eight-year history: eight case studies, hundreds of citations, dozens of participants from government, intelligence, civil society, technology, and the field itself. It is also, without exaggeration, the most alarming body of work we have ever produced. The argument is straightforward and difficult to reckon with: Digital identity makes societies brittle. In 2026, we find ourselves in an era of digital identity fetishism: flawed age verification schemes, biometric and facial-recognition authenticators, and fragile state-backed identity programmes are rolling out at an unprecedented rate. And every one of them, whether current or emerging, remains vulnerable to social engineering. The success rate for a non-technical attack on a user is now three out of four. These attacks cost US companies an estimated $1.6 billion in the five years to 2017 alone; by 2024, fraud runs to hundreds of billions worldwide. READ IT HERE https://newdesigncongress.org/en/report/2026/the-digital-identity-event-horizon/ #digitalidentity #privacy #eupol #did #politics #threatmodelling

Ableton Live 12 Linux Compatibility update

New release: 2026.07.17.2

Changes:

  • WineASIO replaced with PipeASIO, a native PipeWire ASIO driver.
  • Hardware inputs arrive as separate channels, Live can record from any PipeWire source, and the buffer size stays locked at 256 frames. Driver settings live in ~/.config/pipeasio/config.ini.
  • Live now idles at about 2 to 5 percent CPU, dropping the baseline CPU usage by like 75%
  • Theme regressions fixed. Live follows the system light/dark scheme again.
  • Webview corruption in the Learn View fixed.
  • The installer can now update in place. Live, your settings, and your license are kept.

Install:

  1. Download https://github.com/shibco/ableton-linux/releases/latest/download/install-ableton-latest.run
  2. Put your Ableton Live zip from ableton.com next to it.
  3. Run: sh install-ableton-latest.run

Update an existing install:

  1. Download https://github.com/shibco/ableton-linux/releases/latest/download/install-ableton-latest.run
  2. Run sh install-ableton-latest.run --update

One day you wake up and missiles are falling on Tehran. A girl's school is obliterated and explained away as an 'AI hallucination'. The men who ordered it read GPT-tinged speeches, and none of it feels real because the last time you saw these people, they were podcasters and cable news hosts. Another strongman wins an election – the headlines call it a shock win. All you feel is deja vu. Your body knows better.

You reach for your allies and find dust. You were so sure we were stronger, together. But the organisations that promised they would prevent this either no longer exist, or are unrecognisable. And you may ask yourself, "how did I get here?"

You are not alone. Today, we publish 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓖𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓽 𝓒𝓸𝓷𝓿𝓮𝓻𝓰𝓮𝓷𝓬𝓮 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓘𝓽𝓼 𝓓𝓲𝓼𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓽𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓼, a culmination of half a decade of work that helps to understand why this happened, why the people who seized power are who they are, and why their grip on power is far more brittle than it looks.

It might seem tempting to look for answers that neatly explain everything. There are many reasons why, but here we propose two. This is angry and ambitious, but I'm optimistic, and you should be too. Moments like these come once in a lifetime.

The Great Convergence and Its Discontents

The world is unrecognisable. The people responsible are the ones you least expected. And you may ask yourself, "how did we get here?"

Chat Control 1 is back. By a margin of 314-276, the EU Parliament voted to reject the legislation. However, since it was an urgent procedure, an absolute majority of 361 votes was required. As a result, the majority lost and Chat Control 1 passed. The urgent procedure was a dirty tactic by the Council and parts of the Parliament – it’s a procedure not meant to be used for legislation already rejected by the Parliament.

RE: @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu

Without knowing whether it would have made any difference, it is my belief that the targeted suppression campaign against NDC in 2025, in which we received a completely baseless Cease and Desist as we began publishing, stopped our digital identity research from reaching eIDAS 2.0 policymakers. The resulting clusterfuck can be seen basically all around us.

On Thursday and Friday I went to a game developer conference and started talking openly about NDC's unannounced video game concept. The feedback was so overwhelmingly positive I made the decision to move the post-R&D project kickoff forward from my original November plan, to ..... Monday.

Utterly electrifying.

@hipsterelectron @adrienne @groxx I have had the pleasure to work with the Signal team since, and watched them move to usernames. I think it's worth thinking about how teams and their work change over time. There were very specific people who were responsible for those decisions and they are long gone.

@aspensmonster@tenforward.social @jonny@neuromatch.social finally, a book requires capital to produce and preserve. I can make my own books and paper, and yes I must maintain that book but the metabolism and the scale of that effort is utterly dwarfed by the compared digital equivalent. That is the difference the essay is pointing at that your response slides past. I can put a book on a shelf, leave the room, come back in three years, and read it. I don't need to pay for electricity, or hosting fees or security monitoring, or CDNs, or software updates, or licensing changes. The capital requirement for a book is front-loaded and then largely passive or incredibly slow. The capital requirement for a digital object is continuous. I think it's low key pedantic to point out that everything deteriorates. Of course that is true, that's literally the grief of the essay. To argue that the effort and cost to maintain a book for 10 years is somehow analogous to the effort required to maintain an archive of a digital scan of that same text is preposterous. What you say about the consent-over-memory paradox is real as hell. But I don't promise to resolve that paradox. The essay is mourning a lost promise, raging at people who still cling to that promise as things become very dangerous, while describing examples of communities responding honestly to it.

@aspensmonster@tenforward.social @jonny@neuromatch.social I understand why you would find my characterisation of AT as uncharitable. I take that seriously coming from someone who participated in the Tumblr backup. But your response is itself an example of the problem I'm describing. You frame Tumblr as a public platform, therefore fair game. You attribute the harm exclusively to Verizon and FOSTA-SESTA. You don't engage with the fact that communities raised concerns about the scrape at the time, or address any of the other issues of consent described, including the opt out. Tumblr being public doesn't really matter in the context of whether someone is OK with being archived. You can also film a woman on the street in the US, and ignore her if she says stop because you're in public. But that still means you are bulldozing someone else's ability to consent. You describe your own gratitude for the space, and then describe helping to vacuum it into storage without considering whether everyone else in that space shared your assessment of what should happen to their presence there. That characterisation is harsh because even when raised directly, this specific blind spot — "it's public, so consent is implied" — has never been addressed by AT. Now, things are even worse, and AT is still totally unapologetic. Therefore, fury.

@aspensmonster@tenforward.social @jonny@neuromatch.social Thanks for taking the time with something so thoughtful. I appreciate it. To respond: First: although it may seem to be, I'm not making a philosophical argument in this essay. The essay stays strictly in a material and political context. The distinction matters because your counter-arguments are largely philosophical (turtles all the way down, all representations are simulacra, memory is non-consensual by nature.( These are interesting positions, but they don't address what the essay is actually doing. The essay is asking who controls the archive, who bears the cost when it's weaponised, and whose agency is stripped when preservation happens without participation. Those are questions about power, that's where my work lies, and I made that clear in my strict adherence to the material consequences of digital systems.
