@davidgerard@circumstances.run my favorite part of this is where he admits he spends $90,000 a month on tokens to work on a 30-year-old game (in fucking *bash* script) because he wants the AI to do it for him (which he has created 12 Google Max accounts to cheat the token bills for so that he pays less, I am sure Google will be happy about that) bitch I just program that shit myself. 100% free! you have totally lost the meaning of the word "passion project." this game isn't your hobby. you don't even know what's in the game anymore. LLMs are your hobby

@zzt@mas.to @davidgerard@circumstances.run it would frankly be a mercy killing, the reviews are absolutely brutal. "LLMs can't fix your shitty internal culture" should be a mantra. when you're reading his blog post you should bear in mind he's talking about an MMO with like 5 players here is the link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1541710/Wyvern/ Steam doesn't seem to have a dedicated "store page is inaccurate or misleading" report option but if you figure one out let me know

Wyvern on Steam

Wyvern is a real-time, top-down 2D, graphical, massively multiplayer RPG. The game has thousands of maps and playable areas, hundreds of skills, spells and monsters, and all the features you would expect from a big fun RPG: Guilds, crafting, level editing, community features and more!

@zzt@mas.to @davidgerard@circumstances.run holy moly it's even worse than I thought. he has stood up bots as GMs, not just for turning his codebase into sludge. his volunteer team has to talk to Claude. he has a "player abuse monitor" handled by Claude. he has more LLMs running in his game than actual human beings playing it.

@puppygirlhornypost2@transfem.social @davidgerard@circumstances.run That's just his estimated bill! He doesn't pay that much, because he rotates it between 12 Google accounts to make it seem like he's using fewer tokens than he is, basically cheating Anthropic out of the money. He is spending $2,800 a month out of pocket.

@Lingmops@topspicy.social They are terrible from a privacy perspective (joint ownership of NordVPN and Oxylabs, conflict of interest), they lie about what the use case for a VPN is (to the point they have gotten in trouble with the courts), they blow tons of money on marketing (never a good signal for a VPN), and they have previously been breached multiple times.

Either it's a real story or this guy is a top-tier, well-researched, evocative writer and should be publishing bestsellers instead of fooling people on Reddit.

RE: https://scholar.social/@olivia/116895347041158720 "When technology companies offer teachers and students ‘AI training’ or promote ‘AI literacy,’ they are engaged in brand marketing, framed as a progressive, philanthropically fundable intervention. The literacy label locates the problem in users’ understanding rather than in systems’ design, and in doing so, displaces accountability from the companies that built and profit from these systems toward the educators and students who are expected to become fluent in them, and forecloses the prior question of whether fluency is the goal at all. [...] The [stochastic parrot] dismissal reflex stabilizes prematurely into the metaphor. The [AI literacy] accommodation reflex senses that the parrot metaphor has become a comfort blanket and concludes that the critique must be updated rather than sharpened. Without a clear account of what statistical pattern-matching can and cannot do, ‘AI literacy’ remains undefined, critical pedagogy cannot say what it is protecting, and analyses of labor displacement cannot specify what is being displaced. The stochastic parrot formulation, properly understood, does not function as a conclusion but as a constraint on interpretation; these system produce outputs that resemble plausible continuations of their training distribution, without grounded inference, semantically anchored representation, or the kind of iterative, error-sensitive engagement with the world that characterizes thinking. These are not limitations that scale resolves; they follow from the mechanism itself."

@nothacking@infosec.exchange This post seems to be willfully misinterpreting the argument a bit. No mention of Dubai's LED lightbulbs at all, despite LEDs being the kind of bulb (sorry, "lamp") that most people use now. The planned obsolescence isn't in the fine print, it's quite blatantly out in the open. Why defend the lightbulb industry without once acknowledging this blatant example of them doing exactly the behavior, today, right now, that you are defending them from doing 100 years ago?

@robpumphrey@mastodonapp.uk @davidgerard@circumstances.run It wouldn't be impossible, although I believe your bandwidth would be running through the datacenter (and subject to its limits and charges fyi) so it would look like it was coming from your provider. If someone contacted the provider and investigated you I'm sure you'd get turned over; but it would still shield all your requests from your ISP and you could be certain you're not logging anything (though your provider might). It depends on what you are using a VPN for, really.

@paddlaren@mastodonsweden.se the main obstacles to providing VPN service are legal, from all the governments that don't want people to use VPNs (see: the huge worldwide push to deanonymize users with age verification), so I could see a non profit encountering a lot of challenges because it's something of a soft target.
