Hi, this is a friendly reminder: Put "higher is better" or "lower is better" next to you benchmark data or graphs. Thank you so much.

pro-tip: instead of foo/bar/baz use meow/woof/floof. it's just better.

your password must include an upper case letter, a lower case letter, a combining diacritic, a cjk unified ideograph, an emoji, four different whitespaces, three different scripts, and a partridge in a pear tree

I don't know how to say this more clearly.

If you're asking me something, having "asked an AI" counts *negative* points towards doing your own research.

If you don't understand something and think it's okay to parrot what an LLM says you're *actively sabotaging* the integrity of your knowledge. Which I cannot stop but, like, if you ask me afterwards, you're basically telling me "I'm intentionally making it hard for me to learn. Teach me anyway."

Read the damn links. Play with your own code.

Replying to
@chris@social.losno.co @thephd@pony.social kinda thinking, this could conceivably have been the case on 32-bit x86 with "cdecl" calling convention where calling functions with parameters at all was unduly expensive? processors at the time had less architectural registers, probably less stack optimization, and had to deal with this args-on-stack thing same goes for more ancient 16-bit and 8-bit machines, probably.

my current hypothesis is that if you ping copilot to work on someone else's pr, it proceeds as if it's a copilot pr, and just replaces their pr description and title.

not that this is by any means normal.

@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems I genuinely love this. This is a "front end" feature, right? So it's arguably just handling otherwise correctly formatted tar files better. ... and now I'm curious, what does git-pages do to symlinks

@pikhq i think the "don't give a shit" part is so important. I keep hearing about things like how AI is getting better, but the reality is that doesn't even matter. "Vibe coding" is *already* long past the point of diminishing marginal perceived utility. The new models you've got in the past ~year are so much more feel-good than actually useful for anything.

You've probably heard of this statement by now, but, well, until today I didn't know the source code still existed!

@regehr i don't have a concrete one that i can share immediately, but i had someone ask me "why are atomics needed? this works perfectly fine" on a concurrent spsc circular buffer queue that worked entirely relying on compilation unit barriers acting as compiler barriers, word sized load and store being atomic, and x86 tso behavior. running the same program with tests on arm immediately breaks, and so does turning on -flto
