People need to stop asking LLMs "why did you do [thing]?" and treating the answer as authoritative. LLMs do not "remember" their thought processes in that way, and even if they did, the answers would likely not be human-understandable.
When you ask a LLM this question, you're asking it to construct the kind of explanation that a human might give in a similar conversation. Treating this as the *actual* answer is likely to lead you astray.
A modest proposal: when people design web forms that allow users to specify an address in a non-US country but then require all addresses to have a postcode that exactly matches US formats, it should be legal to [redacted] them with [redacted] until they [redacted].
bad: computation time for my code is O(n^3)
good: it is almost *perfectly* O(n^3), the plot of n vs t is very neat.
(n ^3 isn't great but it's probably liveable, next on the to-do list is memoising this function so I never have to run it twice on the same inputs)
