I agree with @Lats comment above. Further, the vast majority of (under 18s) will be affected by many social and economic issues. Are we to extend the same notion to inflation, housing affordability, industrial relations, &c?
This idea, lowering the voting age, has been floated before. Strangely enough, almost always by the political party (and their supporters) that believes that they will benefit electorally from such a change.
(IIRC) The last reduction in voting age, from 21 down to 18, was initiated by Whitlam's Labor government in the early 70's. The argument then was that people of 18-21 years were liable for military conscription, and therefore should be allowed to vote. One might ask why they didn't argue for increasing the conscription age to 21, but as Whitlam was set to abolish conscription altogether, the question is moot. I do wonder though, why it was necessary to reduce the voting age because of conscription when he was about to abolish it? Could it be that the ALP thought that it was to their electoral advantage? (Gasp! Say it isn't so!)
The argument usually devolves down to: "but some 16 year olds are mature enough to vote!". And that statement is true. It is also true that some 20 year olds are not mature enough. But unless we are going to develop and apply individual political maturity tests, and permit those duly certified to vote, the limit has to be applied somewhere.
While the present voting age limit is indeed arbitrary, it is at least consistent with most other 'legal adulthood' limits.
My understanding is that legal age limits pertaining to under 18s is designed to minimise exploitation of young people, and also protect them and others from errors of judgement that are more likely before that age. Any argument to reduce age limits will need to convincingly address that concern.

"Agreement to transition away from fossil fuels ‘not open for renegotiation’, Pacific leader tells pre-Cop"
I bet Mr 'Fossil-Fuels' Albanese wasn't happy with that..
"Speaking at a “saultalaga” – an exchange of views around a meeting table – at the end of a three-hour visit, a string of leaders argued the world must stand behind a 2023 agreement, made at a UN summit in Dubai, to transition away from fossil fuels. More recently it has faced wavering support, with pushback particularly led by oil-producing nations."
And Labor granting NSW's _BIGGEST_ fossil fuel project in history just this past week doesn't help matters..

There's only one party who aren't in the pocket of the fossil fuel industry, and - love them or hate them - the Greens are Australia's only real hope.

The #HighCourt has found planning authorities are required to consider local #climatechange effects when approving #fossilfuel projects.
3 of the 5 judges found in favour of a Hunter Valley residents' group, which halted the #MountPleasant mine expansion last year in the #NSW Court of Appeal.
The High Court agreed & the case is expected to have national implications for the way fossil fuel project approvals take #globalemissions & local climate change impacts into account. #auspol

A universal basic income is a practical system that separates basic economic security from the threat of poverty. Fusion's Citizens Dividend would launch at the Henderson Poverty Line, replacing complex welfare with a single automatic payment to every Australian. No means tests, no withdrawal cliffs, no caseworkers deciding if you are deserving enough. Later indexation is tied to GDP, so as the country grows, everyone shares in that growth. Supplementary supports for disability, housing, and care remain on top. This creates real freedom: the ability to say no to bad jobs, to retrain, to care for family, to start something new without losing your floor. It also strengthens bargaining power, because workers are not choosing between a pay cut and homelessness. The evidence from trials and modelling is clear: it cuts poverty, simplifies administration, and does not cause large-scale labour withdrawal when designed with an integrated tax system. We can afford it by ending fossil fuel subsidies, closing corporate tax loopholes, and taxing resource wealth properly. Join Fusion and help make the Citizen's Dividend a reality. #auspol #UBI #basicincome

I try to understand why inflation caused by external forces is leading to higher bank rates.
Not looking for an argument. Just try to understand the reasoning of the RBA.
E.g. higher rates don't bring the diesel price down. So, that's not the thought, I think.
What is?

#auspol #UN Pearls and Irritations. Australia shouldn’t get a seat at the UN Security Council. Senator David Shoebridge skewers the hypocrisy of Australia’s PM.

“I’ve spent over 50 years fighting fires, and I’ve watched this threat change beyond recognition,” said former Commissioner of Fire & Rescue NSW Greg Mullins.
“The fire seasons start earlier, burn hotter and run longer, because climate pollution from coal, oil and gas is heating the planet.”
Australia’s 2019-20 Black Summer disaster was one of the most catastrophic fire seasons in its history, killing 33 people directly, with an additional 417 deaths attributed to smoke inhalation.
Mr Mullins said that “in the six years since, we’ve added more pollution to the problem”.
“Governments that keep approving new coal, oil and gas projects are raising the risk of even worse fire disasters,” he said.

One Nation has reached the disgruntled members stage of their political cycle with familiar complaints of undemocratic values. It's a loop Australia has seen multiple times since the Queensland state election in 1998. From here comes the inevitable internal disintegration. #auspol

@treleanor@aus.social @sortius@beige.party @graemeinnes@mastodon.social If you read that piece in the Sat Paper on the weekend it all becomes clear: Albanese has pretty much killed off the factions, which means there's no pushback to his neoliberal agenda. He's ruined the Labor brand, and it's not likely to recover any time soon. Opens the door to One Nation. Hopeless. #AusPol
i always find this topic interesting to read about, but it strongly pulls me in opposite directions
when we have liebs, labs, nuts, phonkers, all being dreadful & doing the wrong things, the dream of d/d seems enticing as a correctiveotoh, when i see a disturbing rise in strayans openly wanting to blow everything up & reward The Worst Creatures, who would do terrible things to minorities & Gaia, the nightmare of d/d seems utter anathema

Burnham copied Mamdani. Now Albanese should copy Burnham. The UK’s new prime minister’s urgent brand of retail politics is the antithesis of Anthony Albanese’s plodding, cautious centrism.

Shanks and Hughes
————
“ Shanks trolls the internet with his videos pretending to be a Labor Party supporter looking for Labor supporters he can rip off and sell tickets to for his fake comedy shows.
Jordan Shanks’ biggest fraud scam would be the $millions he raised for his defamation battle against John Barilaro, which he settled for $100,000.
After it settled, and Shanks still had $millions in the bank, Shanks continued to fraudulently raise more money for his claimed battle against John Barilaro for another 3 years.”
——-
“Dave Hughes is trying to promote himself and his comedy shows by pretending to be a Liberal Party supporter, the same as Jordan Shanks does with Labor and its supporters.
If Dave Hughes is so worried about government corruption why did he have coffee, as per the above picture, with Angus Taylor who is one of the biggest crooks in parliament?
There are a lot more commentators / journalists / comedians who are commenting on Australian politics in a dishonest and deceptive manner for ulterior motives. Dave Hughes is just the latest to join the crew using the same fraud strategy as Shanks.”
