@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I just bought a new computer. I chose the components, just like I did in 1991. I installed the OS, just like I did in 1991. I dealt with the glitches, the app problems, the 'issues' mostly like I did in 1991. My computer is tellinh the vendor *almost* nothing, kind of like it did in 1991. But I'm a seasoned geek, and it's taken me three days to get a *mostly* functional system working *mostly* the way I want without selling my favourite underwear colour to someone. In a just universe, the default would be "here's your tool, it works for you" without this much bullshit.

@sidalsolgun@infosec.exchange it is, and it isn't. In the cities, things are perfectly reasonable. Nobody gives a shit about others' unusualness. Small towns are hard to gauge. Most of them have a mixture of intolerant rednecks and a fierce pride community. If you're cruising through, I don't *think* it's a problem. If you're doing drag storytime at the library, you'll definitely get harassed.

@avilewis@mstdn.ca are counter-tariffs the best we have? We need to isolate ourselves from the vaguaries of the US insanity. This has to be a long-term solution, not a 'next quarter' fix.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @georgetakei@universeodon.com I think you misunderstand. This is not passive cynicism, it's a call for IMMEDIATE action! The US needs to put this shite down RIGHT NOW, not just keep threatening future consequences. If you don't act now, if you wait until the GOP is out of power, it's far less likeky to happen. Due procedure, measured response, and waiting your turn are the biggest allies of a despot like Trump. And frankly, the rest of the world is fsirly unconcerned with the US collapsing into anarchy except for the damage it's doing to the rest of us.

@jaredwhite@indieweb.social honestly, bsky seems like it has already failed to maintain momentum. I know people who moved there from twitter, but haven't bothered to log in for months. There's just not a lot of content to drive people. I suspect that $100M will be its swan song as a relevant platform.

My honest intent was to say that I intend to treat trans men the same as I treat trans women, which is (I hope!) with respect, support, and no concern about what's under their clothes if I'm not invited to check it out. (and I'd refuse anyways, because I'm monogamously and faithfully married.)

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org it's a cover of a cover. There are probably hundreds of covers, but John Cale significantly reworked Cohen's original and struck lightning with it. Almost everything that came after was based on Cole's version. Even Cohen absorbed a lot of it in his later concerts. (He also famously said that there was no point in anyone covering it again, after k.d. lang's performance at the Vancouver Olympics)

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I was on the cusp generation. I grew up with records, and CDs were an absolute revelation. Better sound, consistent sound, and simplicity. These days, I'm as likely to buy records as CDs, because they sound good *enough* (modern records are FAR better than most of the '70s and '80s), and if I need better sound, I can download it. What I can't download is the feeling of a record in my hand, the joy of a large album cover, or reading the detailed liner notes while listening to the music.

@chakie@toot.community @dreid@wandering.shop Honestly, "hosted" is a strong word. It stores its information in a single, encrypted file. You can store that file on shared storage (e.g. Dropbox), and access it there directly. Consequently you can share your password database across multiple devices. So yeah, my statement about 'self-hosting' was a bit overblown. It's just storing a file somewhere, and pointing to it from the app. And since it's all open-source, there are actually multiple apps available. I use Keepass2XC on my computers, and Keepass2Android on my phone.

@Nonilex@masto.ai This article suffers from the same extreme myopia as most US-based hand-wringing articles. The US wasn't a shining beacon of democracy and culture before Trump. Most of the world did NOT aspire to become more like the US. It was a behemoth with some fun tourist destinations; and those are no longer worth visiting. And while we will lament the loss of global stability, the lives lost because of (e.g.) the cancellation of USAID, the destruction of decades of scientific research... Nobody outside the USA is mourning the death of the country. It has become too big, too bloated, too destructive. It is a lumbering giant, accidentally or deliberately stomping on others. We will remove ourselves from this abusive relationship. Get rid of Trump, and this won't change. Get rid of the entire white Christian nationalist backers, and we'll still move on. Roll back the anti-human horrors of the past decade, and we'll give you a thumbs-up as we continue with our own nations' interests. This is permanent.
