You can often find me in a fantastic valley ready to talk about rpgs, complain about work, cook an excess of calories and have a drink. (none of this is either metaphor or euphemism).
Also @bovaz@mastodon.online@misskey.social, but I'm trying to move to using prevalently this.

@jwz@mastodon.social @mjg59@nondeterministic.computer The death of rss was cultural, tho. It disappeared from people's consciousness, even in the tech sector. A couple years back, a friend working at a large multinational software company was talking with me about this cool project his backend colleagues were thinking about, that could revolutionize how content was distributed and updated in their infrastructure. He was really surprised when, unprompted, I revealed to him details of how it could and should work, and possible pitfalls they might encounter. They were trying to reinvent RSS because nobody in the company had even heard of it.

@bodhipaksa@mastodon.scot @pluralistic@mamot.fr and things are gonna burn. Today the manager of my manager tried giving me a speech about how we should all adopt llms in development. His motivation is as follow: they sold to our consultancy customers the tale that AI would make development faster and cheaper. So now the customers are asking for everything to be delivered quicker and cheaper. So now the bosses are asking us to make everything quicker and cheaper, even though we told them it wouldn't work that way. So we won't be able to make everything magically quicker and cheaper.

@gabrielesvelto@mas.to working on microcontroller and drivers shaped a lot of how I think about code in ways that are still relevant today that I do "high level" backend web stuff. It's hard to point at a specific thing, but knowing how data will be "structured" and handled by the machine is a real boon in writing clean and understandable code.

@lina@vt.social and to add: at different scales, those kind of large refactorings happened also in smaller companies and shops, so it's not like they were exclusive to big companies that could dedicate people to that. So using LLMs isn't even justifiable by bs like "giving smaller companies big-company capabilities".

@raymaccarthy@mastodon.ie @Fcksd@todon.eu @MediaActivist@todon.eu If I remember my physics right, the 130% discussed here has little to do with what we generally mean in terms of efficiency. It's more like (and this is an oversimplification) "for every photon absorbed, we had on average 1.3 electrons moving and making electrical current". Each of those electrons have lower energy that they would by absorbing the original photon entirely, but they couldn't anyway, so it is a net gain in the power you can output. Only, it's not automatically 130% of the "original" efficiency. Feel free to correct me because I'm basing this off old memories.

@ana@starlite.rodeo I was expressing similar sentiments a few minutes ago with friends. More specifically, I was pointing out that the demarcation between "good" servers/server farms and these hellspawned datacenters may be hard to properly define legally, so the best solution is to give me a large hammer and total impunity.

@scalzi@mastodon.social if a human had done a fraction of the damage that AI has done, they would be out of a job, and sued into homelessness. And it's remarkably unlikely that a human fucked up so bad, because there used to be processes, and checks, to avoid messing up production environments.

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange @mjg59@nondeterministic.computer @jwz@mastodon.social Not what I meant, but sure. email works. Arguably, the user experience isn't better than rss. You need a client to receive, parse and render the whole thing. As a content feed is actually worse, I think, because people can just send me stuff I don't want. I was more talking about "social media feeds", that just aggregate and push stuff towards the users.

@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange I could also see those valuations move around. My boss (pretty high in management in this company) told me they are considering what the price point for tokens would be where they'd switch from "buying tokens", to buying 5k€-10k€ machines for each developer to run local models on. (Which is kind of funny to me, as I've witnessed the whole "let's get rid of our in-house servers and move to the cloud" saga, and now the want to reverse that)

Replying to
@codinghorror@infosec.exchange @mjg59@nondeterministic.computer @jwz@mastodon.social I think the dev experience was less than ideal, because of version incompatibilities. The user experience is possibly mostly to blame on the client side of things. Even html/css/js sucks without a browser to parse it and render it. For example, the fact that it's not push-based is a positive feature, to me, for what rss is meant to do. This is not to say "push" systems don't have their place.
