mastodon 4.7.3Long-time metal fan raised on glam, NWOBHM, US hard rock & metal, and later Goth rock and industrial.
Enjoying the great Fediverse metal community, exploring the bands and sub-genres I've missed over the years - and as much as I can of the excellent music being released every year.

Banner: Close up image of Eddie's bloodshot and rather angry eyes, from the promotional material for the Iron Maiden Senjutsu album.
Listening to the early release songs for the forthcoming debut EP by London goth band Mouth Ulcers. A nice mix of classic goth influences, wrapped up in a melodic package. 🦇
I can almost imagine I'm twenty years old and dancing in a dark club.*
*Would require some impressive magic and/or make-up to achieve.

We're feeling the wrench, with #UnexpectedWhiplash this #TuneTuesday.
Angelic choir to driving drum machine and guitar, you say? With those brooding Eldritch vocals? Well then.
This Corrosion - Sisters of Mercy

A great theme from @The_KamikaZEN@metalhead.club - songs that start with a style and suddenly transform into a different one.
There were three father-daughter duos when we were in the local metal store today. (Goth offspring and I were one of them.)
They were all there for the music, no-one just waiting for the other to finish so they could go. It was great seeing them show t-shirts and LPs to each other, and point out cool posters and decor in the shop.
A point of connection, handing on some great music, discovering new things together.

New Green Lung album coming in September. One to look out for.
Update from the album promo:
A monumental portrait of the power of nature over the dreams and dominion of humankind, 𝕹𝖊𝖈𝖗𝖔𝖕𝖔𝖑𝖎𝖙𝖆𝖓 is also a grand celebration of the occult lore, heavy music scene and Magnificent Seven Cemeteries of our birthplace as a band, the city of London.
Necropolitan - GREEN LUNG
Time to try out the new Neurosis album today after @tomroberts@metalhead.club and @Kitty@metalhead.club were talking about it on Sunday. I knew nothing about the band's past work or recent challenges, so this was a real #MetalSchool assignment for me.
It was pleasant enough, if that's the word. But it will take me a few listens to really decide what I think.

One more #TuneTuesday song for today's #UnexpectedWhiplash - this one nominated by the offspring.
Ghost - "Ghuleh/Zombie Queen"
She is not entirely sure whether it's technically two songs spliced together or not, but she said she can nevertheless personally attest to the potency of its whiplash effect 😅
After @thomas@metalhead.club and @Kitty@metalhead.club were posting about the new Crippled Black Phoenix album, the Goth Offspring heard it through a completely different channel and recommended it to me.
After surgery on my mouth today, the epic and expansive sound of this album are just what I need tonight. (Mouth is fine, BTW, just swollen.)
In fact, I think Sceaduhelm opens my AOTY longlist.

What's this? New song from Muse?
Takes a while to get past the Muse-y atmospherics, but it does get there. Will be interesting to hear it in the context of the new album.

I finally visited a local metal music store today, which is also sadly closing down.
I haven't heard this from Enslaved, but it was a cheap second-hand copy and in good condition.
Also, would you believe me if I told you that I am one of the young people getting into physical music formats for the old school cool? 💿
I didn't fight in the Metallica Wars, but I did enjoy their cover of Whiskey In The Jar this afternoon.

Good to properly listen to the Nine Inch Noize version of Memorabilia. I loved the original NIN cover when I first heard it on the extended Closer to God (Halo 9) CD.

Time I noticed Lemmy playing the wild west bad guy in the 1986 video for I Wanna Be A Cowboy, by Boys Don't Cry. Apparently the song was put together by the bloke who also owned Motörhead's record label.

Rounding out a fragmented day with the new Ultha - A Light So Dim.
@lpl@metalhead.club was right - What's Yours Is Yours To Carry is a slice of doomy goodness, taken somewhere new with the additional vocals by Pardis Latifi. Also an intriguing opera tenor sample on the outro (is that you Caruso?).

I know a bit more about metal than I do about sea shanties, but this is not quite what I expected from Enslaved on a Friday night.

Down a djent rabbit hole today after @m1rk0@social.defcon42.net recommended MetaVoid to me.
That took me to the thall tag on Bandcamp and I followed that to False God, a one-person project from Ukraine. Some of it sounds a bit technical-for-its-own-sake, but I enjoyed it overall.
Apart from the link to djent, I had no idea what thall was in the vast metal sub-genre galaxy. I know a little bit more now, but I need to do more work before the exam.

Suddenly this one falls into place.
This album didn't work for me last year but, sadly (after some things happening to a person I know), it makes perfect sense now.
The contrast between the raw cry of the vocals and the texture of the instruments. And then some moments of quiet beauty.

I've been wondering about singers in metal and rock music after @NoRestfortheWicked@metalhead.club posted a Dio video earlier.
Questions for metal and rock people:
- Who are the singers of today with the sort of power and expression of singers like Dio?
- Who are the modern equivalents?

Now listening to the excellent song Painkiller by Judas Priest.
I wish the surgeon had sung this when I had (minor) surgery last week.
*Brandishes anaesthetic*
Sings: "This! Is! The! Painkiller!"
*Nurse drums on the top of the chair*
*I hold my head very still, tap my foot*
