RE: https://mastodon.me.uk/@ChrisMayLA6/117349846101298234 This article is horrifying in many ways. One thing that’s chilling is that the US is developing a national police service, with local police directly under Trump’s control. But the most horrifying thing for me is the kangaroo court system, where it’s proclaimed that a mass of individuals must show up to court within minutes, and when they fail to show — well, how could they? — this becomes grounds for deportation. When we take this country back a lot of judges are going to have to be impeached.

Our US friends likely know this but on this side of the Atlantic, all had gone pretty quiet on ICE & the continuing round-up of people suspected of being illegal immigrants (whether they actually are or not).... And this likely reflects a change in approach that has seen the agency take a quieter (but as it happens ever more active) stance on arrests & detentions. So, here is a long piece from the Guardian detailing what is actually going on.... shocking! #ICE #USPolhttps://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2026/sep/28/ice-us-immigration-new-tactics

Kind of bummed that this petition against a monstrous AI data center has not yet broken 6,000 signatures. “One of the world’s largest AI data centres is being planned next to Auchtertool village in Fife, Scotland. The height of six double decker buses and length of 100 football pitches. An estimated 20% of Scotland’s energy will be consumed by this.” https://www.change.org/p/stop-the-proposed-ai-data-centre-near-auchtertool-fife

Capital One bank closed more than 300 Trump-affiliated bank accounts in March 2021 because of evidence of money laundering. Five years ago. I’m curious whether they reported their suspicions to law enforcement and what action, if any, was taken. @georgemonbiot.bsky.social I see no reason why a rich person should be able to extract 100% of their wealth when they decide to leave the country they've been living in — especially if they leave for purely selfish motivations. They were sheltered by and protected by the legal frameworks of that country, which allowed them to make their money. A large part of their wealth — I'd say the vast majority — should be taken in tax when they go.

I just finished reading "This Is An Uprising" by brothers Mark Engler and Paul Englar. For a heavily-footnoted non-fiction book I have to say it was often thrilling. It tells the story of the rise and rise of nonviolent resistance, details its successes and some of its failures, and explaining what makes the difference. It goes a long way to being a "how to topple a dictator" manual, and for obvious reasons I think we've going to need it. HIGHLY recommended.

@starlily@mastodon.social Congresspeople from rich districts shouldn't be paid more than those from poor districts. It provides an incentive for richer lawmakers to divert funds to their own districts and away from poorer districts. The fairness doctrine is fine, but can only apply to broadcast media, and not to cable media or print. The CEO cap is too high and only applies to wages, while CEOs are often compensated in other ways, too.

The AI bubble will have burst long before 2030, when the Lanarkshire centre is supposed to come online, leaving a huge mess for someone else to clean up. But they'll push ahead anyway, because in the short-term developers can make a lot of money and politicians can get a lot of kick-backs.
