@Sustainable2050@mastodon.energy this is terrible. Those are Australian summer temperatures. There's a real risk of bushfire, forest fire. Has it rained recently? People probably don't realise how hazardous those temperatures can be. You MUST rest in the heat of the day; care needs to be taken for outdoor workers. Put water out for animals and birds.

On posts about the fires and evacuations: constant refrain of 'arson' and 'it's all orchestrated'.

I'm just so. damned. tired. of this conspiracy theory nonsense. What's doubly frustrating is that they are *so close* to 'getting' it ... and yet so very, very far.

@claudi@darmstadt.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr omg I love drm-free. As a Linux user being able to nuke my system when I want without losing stuff, and being able to dropbox my books onto my kobo reader, it's just the best. Love it Mr Doctorow that you trust readers to do right. And you are articulating all the things we've been feeling vaguely uneasy about and couldn't express.

@ard_the_rich @artemis@dice.camp no, I think that's a valid point and connected to the point about sitcom, possibly. Look at how we tend (most of us) to stay locked into music of our youth. 60 year olds are listening to music from the eighties. We still think of movies from the 90s as recent and get a shock when we see how old their stars are because we saw the movies rerun just last week. I think some of it is to do with how we felt at the time, some of it is to do with having more mental space and slower time when young, and some of it is the speed and focus of intervening years of work and parenting. And history IS media. Like Baudrillard said the Iraq? war didn't happen [in a sense]

Being mostly offline for a week has made me very aware of just how much rage bait I see online. I felt so much more peaceful. I checked for messages, checked the weather, but basically avoided doomscrolling. Screen time went from 5 hours a day to 20 minutes. Heartily recommended.

@quixoticgeek indeed. @wesdym the point of the term 'new'speak is not that it's new, but that like the language in Orwell's novel, it is desceptive and changes how people think. Also, no need to be an asshole about it. I saw what you posted @ me.

I was reading some theory because I keep thinking about wanting to do something through a Marxist-anarchist lens but omg academic Marxist theory is always so fucking pompous and obscure. I probably doesn't help that I've lost a bit of brainpower in the last few years but how can theory be Marxist AND classist? Like I feel it's not just me. There's a particular tone, you know?

One of the old latops I have has some worn out keys. I'm wondering if it's worth attempting to replace them. Using a plug-in keyboard was getting annoying. I already replaced the battery and it has a bit of life left in it, though not the greatest specs. It's a touchscreen, but doesn't work that great with just touch. I feel it has potential. Maybe for media and recipes in the kitchen.

Not even wilful ignorance, they're choosing the counternarrative deliberately. I don't know how you manage as a professional in the field. I hope you're taking care of your mental health.

I feel being involved in many community groups over the years has made me a bit cynical about anarchism. Over and over, there is so much personal conflict, so many folk just dragging all this baggage and creating dramas over nothing. People undermining each other. Usually older white guys - I think it's a power thing. They lack power elsewhere in their lives so they find it through whatever clubs or volunteer organizations they're in. But it's just exhausting and disappointing, you know?

I described the name 'natural gas' as being very 'newspeak'. This person replied:

" @artemis@climatejustice.social The term was coined nearly
200 years ago.
This is easy to look up if you have Internet access, and is a great way to avoid the embarrassment of
demontrating in pubic how you either don't know how to look stuff up you don't know about, or are too lazy to try '"
.........
..........

I guess they aren't familiar with the Orwellian term? I meant it in the sense of deliberately manipulating how you think about a thing.

Did you read 'newspeak' and think it means 'new'?
