Definitely support using positive feedback to keep yourself grounded, especially when in academia where criticism is the norm.

@lerxst @NicolaElle @courtcan I remember the hostage crisis. That Fourth of July, I wandered around one of the innumerable entertainments & fireworks, and even as a kid I felt that there was something really ugly mixing in with the patriotic hoopla.

@libramoon@mastodon.social @QasimRashid@mastodon.social I just finished Iain M. Banks’ “The Player of Games” (2009) which features a person of the post-scarcity Culture encountering an imperial society whose entire sociological principle was “dominance.” At the end of the book I felt that the U.S., particularly the Epstein class, had been exposed in all their raw hideousness through the medium of fiction.

@Deglassco My family was friends with Anselme Remy, a Haitian scholar who worked to try to free Haiti from these pernicious U.S. interferences. We were close while he was in the U.S., but after he returned to Haiti, though we were in touch up to the events you described, since then it’s been hard to find out anything.

@petrabrandstrom@mastodon.art Oddly, the first thing I thought of was “fairy tales”. The bright young warrior in the foreground to me looks like the modern day rendition of fairy tales as encouraging and inspiring stories for children. The dark grim looming monsters, on the other hand, make me think of the much darker folktales that were the original fairy tales. An inspired child of the present ready to take on the looming monsters of the past.

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social Lovely story! I greatly enjoyed reading it, and agree with another poster that you should submit it somewhere like Clarksworld.
You might enjoy Becky Chambers’ “A Psalm for the Wild-Built” which touches on similar themes, though with a different style and plot line.

@theresnotime@fox.nexus OK, I swear this is a True Story (tm), heard from my parents and verified by the local paper.
In the apartment complex where I grew up, we had duck ponds. One day, someone from the complex witnessed a car stop near one. The driver got out, seized a sitting duck (heh), and drove off. The neighbor took down the license plate and reported it.
Cops came by the car owner’s house and were told the vehicle owner was not home; he had gone to his job… at a nearby restaurant.
