RE: @Enthalpiste@social.sciences.re

Microsoft Research has been throwing out some real negative papers on LLMs in workflow recently - it seems fairly unsurprising that a statistical compression based tool would introduce errors into documents over workflows... but this is fairly damning.

So, Nature retracted a much cited meta-analysis on "AI in education" because it had terrible methodology today. Unfortunately, it had been around for some months persuading people that AI in education had proven positive effects.
Instead, read this paper: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/400186385_Effect_of_Artificial_Intelligence_on_Learning_A_Meta-Meta-Analysis which does a meta-meta-analysis to show that you really can't prove anything either way with the existing studies because they all have extreme bias (in different directions).

@hannorein@mastodon.social in addition, I think the thing people miss about physics-based models is that they also validate our understanding of systems - a statistical fit just "gives answers" without really telling us much about *why*, which is surely the point of science?

(One of the reasons I was furious about Brexit was that it was clear it made the GFA slightly weaker, given it really only works if we can "pretend" that the border between NI and Eire sort-of-doesn't-exist. )

@evan@cosocial.ca @alice@lgbtqia.space Evan, I know I'm piling on here, but seriously. It should be obvious to you that you can't *tell* if people don't want their content boosted without *asking* them. This is what "informed consent" means. You strike me as someone who thinks you can solve social problems with tech, but this isn't true (and never really has been). If you want to both let people know your services (which, tbh, I'm not sure I see the point of, but you do you) exist *and* actually get consent, the correct flow would be: If the account in question has not been seen by your service before, *reply to the post you want to boost, asking for consent to boost it, fully explaining what tags.pub is*. Store and respect the response, and allow a mechanism for opting out in future. (Ideally, you should also allow the response to be "for that one post", "for only these tags", or other limiting selections, not just "opt in for everything".) Doing anything else isn't opt-in, it's opt-out, and deeply disrespectful of social contracts. Saying that consent matters when you clearly haven't considered *just asking* shows you have no real understanding of what consent (or a social contract) is.

@oddtail well, a reasonable way to estimate is to look at a phone designed to do much of that already - the Fairphone series are designed to be modular and repairable... but even they have the main storage, memory and CPU soldered to the mainboard to make things light and thin (as, increasingly, laptops do) https://www.fairphone.com/the-fairphone-gen-6

@oddtail "bricked" just really means "doesn't boot to the OS" - this could be anything from software damage (say, a firmware update that doesn't complete successfully and breaks the bootloader that runs when you turn the phone on) to actual hardware damage (say, a component burns out on the motherboard for the phone).

@peterb @j_bertolotti well, and the closely related "This may have good uses, but the negatives are too high" (analogies: asbestos, CFCs, etc). The problem with technologies like this is that the industry in question often requires legislation to stop them using the tech despite its harms - and governments are slow to legislate because of the short-term economic effects & lobby influences.

As a minor point of agreement from a different direction: Grayson Perry (Turner Prize winning artist who happens to also like cross-dressing - and is very secure in saying he is male) has noted before that in cross-dressing circles, there's the "people who just like cross-dressing" and the "people who were clearly there because they wanted more than just cross-dressing [but you needed to let them figure it out themselves]".

@ngaylinn I think it's more depressing that the author thinks that no-one is talking about these issues - I am not sure if it's depressing about their bit of astrophysics or about science itself. I have been talking about precisely these issues in academia for several years now - and I don't think I'm particularly special! So, the question is; is it just that the "LLMs are obviously a case of dangerous intellectual automation" people aren't getting into the groups that adopt LLMs wholesale?

@hannorein@mastodon.social I seem to recall some general paper on statistical models (the "AI" approach here) showing that this is essentially always going to happen due to the sparsity of data near the tails of the distribution. That paper suggested an over-estimation of rare event frequency though - it was trying to argue that models make the same trade-off as humans do re "1 in a million" events and their significance.

@penwing@wandering.shop for Time Travel, I would be inclined to go with, say, The First 15 Lives of Harry August. The "time travel" is unconventional, but it's written arguably for a less genre-involved audience, and it does address many of the sub-genre's concerns. For First Contact, even though it is "from the other side", if it doesn't have to be a novel , I might pick Iain Banks' The State of the Art. Like a lot of First Contact stories, it's *really* about humanity. (Or, left field, Nnedi Okorafor's Lagoon?)
