@EI3JDB@mastodon.radio
mastodon 4.7.3I wanted to be a ham in my teens but I couldn't figure out how to learn enough Morse, so I went into professional radio telecoms instead. Now, 40+ years later, I got my licence -- but I am still trying to learn Morse. (It's much easier with computers!)
Outside this hobby I am a maker (=mad inventor) and a beekeeper living in rural Ireland.

Irish: we don't use "yes" or "no"
Japanese: we do - but they don't always mean what you think they mean

@ppossej@aus.social Since we're doing this, my first language was 4004 Assembly, my first paying gig was DSP (although we didn't call it that) in 8051 Assembly on a CP/M box as big as an electric cooker.
But I came here to say that eliminating 50+ signals from CVs has been a thing since I was 50 - which is from before LLMs were a thing.
Plus ça change and all that :-(

@CppGuy@infosec.space @ZBennoui@dragonscave.space @anon_opin Another 60-something here and, in so many ways, I'm living my best life so far. Sure, my knees aren't what they were, and neither is my eyesight, but mostly things are great.
I'm not really trying hard to not die, though. Death is inevitable. It's what happens before death that matters.

@datarama@hachyderm.io Did the "meaning" come from satisfaction in your own craft or the approval of society?
The first won't be taken away. It might change from being a profession to a hobby, like your bonsai gardening (which could become a profession, as people have more time on their hands.)
Unless the robots show up at our doors to lobotomize us, we will still be able to code.
We just might not get paid for it anymore. Although, with the token costs needed to recover AI investment, maybe we will.

@datarama@hachyderm.io I for one have no interest in conversation with a chatbot. Nor am I interested in chatbot art, craft or literature.
I want the company of humans. Maybe one day that will be called bigotry, but there it is.
One thing I suspect is beyond today's AI is understanding or even perceiving the whole concept of the meaning of life (or lack thereof.)
Humans have been addressing it since the Epic of Gilgamesh and writing whole works on the subject since the Old Testament (e.g Ecclesiastes)

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social It's simple statistics. You are much more likely to be killed by a human than a bear in US national parks.
(It's not because there are more humans than bears)
Killed by bears 2014-2019: 7 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_bear_attacks_in_North_America)
Killed by humans 2014-2019: 25 (https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/mortality-data.htm)

I guess it's to do with the thickness of the lens, and probably works better on older people (I'm in my 60s)

@sjaakkeuvelaar@mastodon.nl @VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social Supermarket honey tends to be blended, and often with rather tasteless types (canola/rapeseed, I'm looking at you.) Beekeepers can harvest individual flows, so I can offer blackberry, or whitethorn, or apple, and so on. Each has it's own flavour, often of the flower or fruit.
As you say, it's a far superior product.

@datarama@hachyderm.io I still think that, here in socialist Europe, they won't turn the entire middle class out on the streets. That's not the way we do things this side of the Atlantic.
And, even on a basic income, you can have indoor trees.
I'm serious - something like a YouTube/Patreon channel of practical bonsai might well provide an appreciative audience (and income stream) in that world.
