@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange I saw this in a post a while back and it really hit me… Do you have a problem with socks? NT: No (thinks WTF?) Aut: No (thinks I have a system) I literally have a system for getting socks on so that they aren’t too tight across my toes after I put my shoes on. 🤣

@thepurpleoctopus@lgbtqia.space I work in tech, and I 100% agree that we need to challenge the assumption that humanities are somehow not “useful”. The seems to have increasingly crept into public discourse from the far right. An educated person should be broadly well read, including science, tech, arts and humanities, and we need people specializing in all these domains.

@Steffi@toot.wales the Dutch way is wear regenbroek (rain trousers) over your clothes, and then a rain coat with that. It really keeps you safe from all the splashing around your ankles. I see guys in suits going to work in the rain like this all the time here in Amsterdam.

@energisch_@troet.cafe @thepurpleoctopus@lgbtqia.space the end game of big tech right now seems to be to flood the world with LLM generated content that echoes the same patterns as human language, but the intentionality of what is being communicated is gone. Real communication is also getting lost in this flood.

@weirdestate these stairs are pretty normal for the Netherlands, if you remove the robust handrails, and then also curve them a bit so they take up less space. The Dutch word for stairs is “trap”.

@thesquirrelfish@sfba.social @weddige@gruene.social @JoBlakely@mastodon.social well, the better the “security” the less an individual can actually do. I agree that it’s a balancing act between ease of use and being cautious. Things like restaurant QR codes where you order and pay are too wide open for abuse, ditto for charity collections via posters with QR codes. Having them on business cards or in other scenarios can be useful.

@JoBlakely@mastodon.social I think if you are an artist or small business handing out cards, this is one scenario where I would have some trust in it. I see this a lot at craft fairs and the like. QR codes for ordering in a busy pub or restaurant, or fundraiser posters put up by who knows what individual are another matter.

@reloadedhead @tkissing I didn’t compare them directly, I was merely pointing out that selfish actions that take away the rights of others (in the SUV case it takes away my sense of safety on the roads, but for others it has literally taken lives) are an emotive issue and not an “interesting philosophical question”. There are plenty of right wingers who poison public discourse with “respectful questions” up to an including the extreme example I gave. Disingenuous questions don’t deserve respect.

Replying to
@reloadedhead @tkissing there are limits to the respect owed to a “respectful question”, depending on the topic. If I politely ask the internet “why shouldn’t an individual have the right to own another human being?” I should remember that for other people it’s not just an “interesting philosophical question”, but something that has caused suffering. SUVs disproportionately kill pedestrians and other road users, and terrify the rest of us. If question is not disingenuous it’s lacking empathy.

@ghard @reloadedhead @richlv @fj yeh, I always make a point of staring at them with a disgusted look on my face. Worst is these things in Amsterdam rush hour, when they go through the traffic lights even though there is no space to go on, and then block the crossing. Most cyclists at RAI crossing will bang on the side as they go past, but it’s necessary as they might move on as the traffic moves and won’t see us.

@reloadedhead the “both sides” argument isn’t going to cut it when we know who the real enemy is. It’s the one Elon bought Twitter to boost. It’s the one that’s rounding up (shooting) innocent people in the US and putting them in camps. It’s the one with deep pocket funding to systematically pull public discourse to the extreme right, backed by people who were jolly good friends with Epstein, and we aren’t even people to them. They will retreat to luxury bunkers while we die of climate change

@thesquirrelfish@sfba.social @weddige@gruene.social @JoBlakely@mastodon.social it’s the context that’s the danger. You can fake the context by walking in somewhere and leaving flyers or putting stickers, and with QR codes it’s way too easy for the average person to already have the link opened before they stop and think. Scammers are never going to rely on hand typing a url, it gives the mark too much time to think. A nice QR code can feel official until it’s too late.

@PedestrianError @eq “boys are more likely to be beaten up by a bully” - are you not paying attention? The rate of femicide is staggering. Recently 2 women who worked together at a bank in Amsterdam were found murdered within a few days of each other. Everyone assumed there must be a connection. There was not. One was murdered by creepy guy hanging around train station, the other by her boyfriend. Many women spend years living with their bully unable to escape.

@reloadedhead @fj Where is the line for you in the balance between individual wants and the known dangers? We can already count the dead children, and measure how poor the visibility is. More than once I have had to bang on an SUV to stop them driving over my child laden bakfiets at a crossing (because they went through the lights when there wasn’t space to go on and blocked the crossing so I had to pass in front and they couldn’t see me and started to move with the traffic in front.
