@benroyce@mastodon.social @Alice@beige.party I remember piloting some weird powerboat with my grandfather once that was not really capable of no wake. It was just geared too high. It had dual engines, and if you shut one off it was nearly impossible to steer. We got used to getting yelled at lol

@varx@defcon.social @corq@infosec.exchange yeah there's a project one of my coworkers has been trying to figure out how to basically make Claude sort out a decades old organized chaos shared Excel document into a searchable database for another system, but that'd require sending the sensitive info within out to the poop cloud. Ultimately I think there will just be some manual reformatting of the data then importing it from an orderly csv file or whatever

@apzpins@some.apz.fi I mean all bets on common functionality may be discarded when the dang thing has an LED down the well.
Now that I think of it, though, it is actually not unique to Apple... didn't some Sony Minidisc devices offer this same round 1/8" TOSLink? I seem to vividly remember it, but I can't recall if the jacks for it were dedicated or shared with copper

@apzpins@some.apz.fi I vaguely remember the Apple devices of this era having a really turbo funky 1/8" jack where it's TRS for stereo audio out but might also be TRRS for headsets-- but either way it can also accept a flavor of TOSLINK connector that has no square surround and just inserts there.
It's really funky when the driver gets confused and starts turning on the optical transmitter when it's not warranted to do so... you get a weird little red pinspot shining out the jack!

@benroyce@mastodon.social @Alice@beige.party as I recall I didn't like that boat very much, it just had this two level cabin thing going on with an upper bridge that had cockpit controls that didn't work and the deck was really cramped. it was one of those more money than sense luxury yachts someone in his sailing club had
the ferry, however... the idea of living upon that is intriguing. those are usually pretty big and have a lot of creature comforts

@benroyce@mastodon.social @Alice@beige.party it was kind of a weird sport fishing configuration.
I remember thinking it seemed kinda half-baked, like there was a toilet but you had to bring a bucket of water in there with you to flush and pump it out with

@lolcat@digipres.club the last time I was there, downtown Miami had a lot of WEIRD SHIT. It was glorious. There were all these areas where adjoining office buildings and stuff had enclosed their alleyways and turned them into shopping malls, places where you could walk right from one of those into private offices, at least one bizarro glass tube corridor that took you under an expressway (Knight Center Metromover station to the James L. Knight Center)
meanwhile downtown Sac is just hostile :(

@apzpins@some.apz.fi yeah! I think it's got a mechanical switch but then tries to identify the device inserted by electrical resistance (?). Generally the little high speed heliograph would get stuck on due to dirt or foreign objects in the jack that kept the switch contact from closing.
(This making the assumption that it's the typical sort of contact where it's normally closed when no plug is inserted.)

my completely uneducated guess is that when you're running OSX or Windows on one of these, it uses some kinda jack detection to determine where to send the audio, and ALSA just simply exposes all the output options to the end user and doesn't depend on that
your mileage may vary but it seems like on my setup the correct setting is to select port Line Out and profile Analog Stereo Output

Wow I didn't realize when you order a replacement Pixel battery from iFixit that $40 price includes EVERYTHING you need to replace it
https://www.ifixit.com/products/google-pixel-6a-battery-genuine
Is there anything else I should add? My battery is definitely at the "please, I am so tired" stage.
