@Nickiquote@mstdn.social Yes, if you’re an idiot chemist with no common sense, you can turn hydrocarbons into carbohydrates and proteins. Except doing that uses a fuckton of energy and intermediates more than say, growing some shrimp. tl;dr It’s amazing what you can do when you have free energy and externalise all your wastes.

@davep@infosec.exchange @Nickiquote@mstdn.social Re plastics: looking ahead to how we scale down to a minimum of recyclable plastics with near-zero new oil input, and avoiding too much plastic turning to CO2 when reformed. Enzyme-catalysed plastic restructuring? I do wonder if the push for biodegradable plastics is what’s led to microplastic fragmentation and mass loss into the environment. Maybe we should be avoiding self-degrading plastics, but keep 100% of them in circulation to be fully recycled.

@2legged@mastodon.ie For the Farage-voting segment that’s confined to a Facebook walled garden with no other news, they’re unreachable. But for everyone else, this will get way more shares and laughs than Nigel’s shitty TikToks. The essential message content is that Farage is a loser, and you wouldn’t vote for a humourless loser, would you? The trad policy message is entirely irrelevant.

@MiaMarkTwo@syzito.xyz I have said before that unlike the other sciences, computing has never gone through an ethical crisis that shaped what was acceptable and what must be avoided. Chemistry obviously had WWI & Haber, physics had WWII and Teller, medicine had the Nazi camps, genetics tried to get ahead of the problem with Asilomar. But computing, surveillance, data, control misuse has just gone from strength to strength.

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social Ok, stage #2. Someone, definitely not you, needs to find out which vc /banks are funding this, and which insurer is planning to underwrite the launch. Cause them enough pain to drop any connection with this abomination. More broadly, if the FCC is arguing it is not competent to be the regulator, fine, let ESA start pressure for the UN to take over that role.

Much the same as the US does all the time under national security provisions.

@patrickhadfield@mastodon.scot If this is a local planning issue, and hasn’t been called in for further scrutiny, I’m sure Google knew exactly what they were doing, hoping that the local overstretched planning dept would miss the deceit buried in an appendix. If they’ve tried this on two separate applications, all of their current applications nationally should be halted and examined for fraud. And then kicked out.

It would be an interesting comparison to France, where the canal network sprang up for intercity trade, and to feed the maw of Paris with wood and food, then was hit over the head by the railways, who all hated each other … (and to forestall the military comments, yes, rapid mobilisation and logistics on the canals and then the railways was a factor important for France but absent in Britain)
