@rogerparkinson Hm, "procrastination" is from Latin "for-tomorrow-ination" so I propose "crasnuncinated" - "tomorrow-[is]-now-inated". (Pronounced with... oh well never mind, English will pronounce it however it bally well wants to.) I generally feel crasnuncinated when I have to get up for work having stayed up way too late the night before doing something fun.

@yukijoou@fedi.kemonomimi.gay @BathysphereHat@mastodon.online @ljrk@todon.eu No, there's usually these days a copyright transfer to the publisher (assuming it's not published with a creative commons licence in which case it's moot for purposes of this thread). Most publishers allow authors to post either a preprint (version before peer review) or accepted manuscript (after peer review, before formatting) on an institutional site only, after some embargo period (getting longer and longer). Almost all allow sharing privately by email because they can't stop it though some are exploring mechanisms to monitor/limit that too. Authors should talk to their librarians for help to make their work open access, librarians are desperate to help. Once it's on the institutional site it can generally be found on tools like Unpaywall (theoretically also Google Scholar as long as that resists enshittification). (Someone will mention SciHub. It gets much of its content through hacks which Have Side Effects and it doesn't help change the bigger scholarly publishing picture so I'm not a fan but sure, it also exists.)

#NZpol, laws around sexual consent
It always confuses me when a right-wing party proposes an actual good law especially one that would ordinarily be associated with the left. So when I saw the RNZ article about National pledging reform of consent definitions I was all "Huh, what's up with that?" Part of what's up with that seemed to be that they were tying it in with their "victim's rights / tough on crime" rhetoric which always ends up actually bashing vulnerable groups disproportionately, but still. But then I saw the Stuff article on the same topic, which explains that the other part of what's up with that is that Labour has been trying to get this done as a cross-party thing for ages and National's been actively sitting on their hands about it, so yeah that explains it. They're basically holding justice to ransom for election votes. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/crime-and-justice/741708/national-promises-stricter-rules-on-sexual-consent https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/361008148/national-promises-change-consent-laws-if-re-elected-labour-says-lets-get-it-done-now

@randulo@mastodon.social I learned "scan" and "skim" as two different things. Scan for keywords, skim for the general gist, read for full details. If I'm on a website for some software and I'm wanting to find out how to fix a problem I'm having with the software then I'll scan the page/navigation looking for keywords like "FAQs" or "Troubleshooting" or "Documentation" or "Support". Or if I have a book about birds in front of me and I want to know if it has anything about kakapo then (assuming there's no index and the contents page is unhelpful!) I'll scan through looking for keywords or photos. If I find the documentation, or I find a chapter on kakapo, then I'll probably start skimming to get myself a general overview of the topic. If/when I reach a section that seems particularly relevant to what I need to know, I'll drop my speed even further and read closely so that I can absorb all the details. As you say, they're all useful in the right context and unhelpful in the wrong context. If we read *everything* on every website we went to we'd never get anything else done. And scanning or skimming can make sense for catching up on social media. But when we're going to reply to someone it's, at minimum, only polite to actually (re)read their original post before inflicting our stream of consciousness on them. @marjolica@social.linux.pizza @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange

Looking for experiences of before/after with window insulating film - especially if you've used EcoLux 70 Solar Gard.

The data rates pretty well compared to double-glazing especially for the price. I get it would cut incoming radiative heat in summer, and keep more warmth in in winter, and these are good.

I'm more nervous about:
* it would also obviously cut incoming radiative heat in winter, and my big bay window is *glorious* to sit in on a sunny winter morning so that would be a bit sad

* I'd presume this would also mean less good sunlight for the houseplants?

* my windows consist of lots of panes in an aluminium frame and the person who came to quote didn't really talk about how great a role that frame would be playing in heat transfer especially outgoing so I don't know how much that would limit the effectiveness of the film.

@wesdym@mastodon.social Human bodies aren't an old pair of jeans or Yet Another Copy of last year's bestseller. People have a reasonable expectation that if they donate their body for science it will be used for science, not for ...military purposes. There's a thing called informed consent -- they have an ethical duty (even if there isn't a legal one, idk I'm not a lawyer) to make sure you're aware of, and understand, and agree to how the body may be used. If they're not willing to get fully informed consent then they shouldn't accept the donation. @MissConstrue@mefi.social

And I said "Oh sure, that's interesting, will you transcribe them yourself?" And she said "Oh I'll get the AI to do it." I *really* should have pointed out that in that case it will in fact go everywhere, but I was suddenly beset by a soul-crushing nihilistic ennui and just went with the rest of the interview. Sigh.

I *can* see the uses too of it taking you to a point in the document proportional to where you are in the scrollbar, but I wish they'd retained *some* way to just go up/down a single screenful at a time.

@daibhidc@mendeddrum.org No look this blew my mind when I first came across it but there seems to be (a branch of?) US evangelism that... genuinely worship Jesus and Him alone. Like I was watching a video of a guy talking about "red letter Bibles" (which print Jesus' words in red) and I was getting more and more confused because he was talking about how they're the most important parts of the Bible, and I was thinking isn't the Bible traditionally seen as *entirely* inspired by God and therefore all important? and even if you don't believe that, there's plenty of parts where God is literally talking to people so shouldn't you have those in red too? But then he mentioned something about not really believing in the Trinity/Holy Spirit (I forget how he phrased this all so I'm likely misrepresenting some nuance) and I was like 🤯 I knew US evangelism was weird, I didn't know it didn't even accept the Nicene Creed, like *whoa*.

@RobotDiver@starlite.rodeo TLDR - no, I think? For competitions feeding into the big international ones there are four disciplines (five if you include synchronised skating which is deservedly starting to get a higher profile) - singles men, singles women, pairs, and dance. Singles just compete individually, no pairing up/dance, and skate a short programme (three jumps, three spins, and a step sequence) and a long "free" programme (more jumps, three spins, step sequence, and choreo sequence). For the highest level on the step sequence you need to do two 'clusters' of three difficult turns on one foot. Which is absolutely difficult, it's life goals for me as a skater, but as a viewer three turns in a row in the middle of modern frenetic step sequences is blink-and-you-miss-it territory. Pairs has jumps, throw-jumps, lifts, and stuff I forget, not my favourite discipline personally. Ice dance has lots of lifts and a death spiral and a twizzle sequence and other stuff but my favourite bit is the one-foot step sequence - you still have to pay attention to spot it but only because everything's done with such beautiful edges it blends in seamlessly with the rest. @Rozzychan@fandom.ink

@tezoatlipoca Haha on the flip side of that, as someone who has had to implement products, I've learned not to ask sales people "Will your product do X?" because when they blithely say "Yes absolutely" it's impossible to tell whether they mean: a) it currently does X right out of the box b) it can do X with a little configuration c) if you have a developer you can use our API to do X d) it's on our roadmap so sure, you *will* be able to do it. at some point. e) it can do something we call X but will later turn out to be a completely different thing than what you call X or f) please give us your money Instead I ask for the documentation (or at a pinch a demonstration, but preferably a live one that includes a view of the config) of *how* it does X. @jalefkowit

@GOKUSHRM There are lots of different Mastodon phone apps developed by different people, and they've all implemented different subsets of the Mastodon functionality. Only the web version has all the "canonical" functionality of Mastodon. You could contact the developers of the specific app you're using to ask them to add more settings functionality. (There's probably an about page somewhere in the app.) But be gentle, they're generally volunteers doing it in their spare time and have to prioritise the most popular or the most critical functions. @stux

@GOKUSHRM I can't really answer that, I just tried a couple that people recommended and decided which one I liked best for myself. That was a few years ago so I can't even remember what else I tested or what the differences were. A lot of it is UI, yes. Some will have more motivated developers so will keep up-to-date with new Mastodon features more quickly. Different developers have different things they're interested in too. Some might focus on filters, some might make quote-boosts work really smoothly. I don't know if any have focused on advanced settings. I suspect that's less likely since most advanced settings are things you set up once and forget, so the app developers figure they'll focus on things people will be doing on the app every day instead. But you could try a few different apps to see. https://fedi.tips/which-apps-can-i-use-should-i-use-the-official-app-or-a-third-party-app/ lists some common ones and provides a good general explainer about apps too. @stux

A good 35+ years ago I was in a giant inter-school choir that sang in the Town Hall and I still remember many of the songs word for word and note for note (in some cases both melody and descant). One of them in particular, "The Mermaid", is one I got in the habit of singing to myself when particularly upset, in order to ward off tears. YouTube doesn't have the exact version we sang, but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5iO0lddP9Y by the King's Singers comes closest -- we only sang the first two verses plus the last one, and in that last verse our second line was "[sailing free] / when the bosun said to the captain, 'Sir, we have to put to sea.'" (This makes no sense if they're already sailing free in the middle of the Atlantic but there it was!) #PersonalPlaylist #JukeboxFridayNight
