@swan_tower@wandering.shop Ah yes not talked about everywhere *stuffs Murderbot recommendation under the couch* So more seriously I recently finished Yume Kitasei’s The Deep Sky and loved it! Generation ship of female-bodied 20yo graduates of a brutal “only the best” training program, far enough out to feel they can’t some back but still able to talk to the people they left behind forever. War breaking out behind them and murders on board. Really loved the plot and characters and rich emotional subtexts.

@ZachWeinersmith One of my favorite old cookbook finds was a recipe for whole suckling pig. The first two lines were “Measure your oven. Then MEASURE YOUR PIG.” I have never made whole suckling pig but I 💯 guarantee if I had, this would have been the step where I messed up.

@Catvalente@wandering.shop I’m from Appalachia so the main one I remember is the Jack Tale where Jack catches Death in a magic sack. I heard it as an oral recitation on cassette tape but if that still exists it’s getting drowned by the movie based on the story and Fables. :P

@ZachWeinersmith I mean, I make food for a living, so unless the superhuman intelligences wipe out everyone who eats food I’m… not expecting my life to fundamentally change? It’s never been clear to me if the people who make these kind of declarations have any understanding of the food chain beyond “and then my waiter brings it to me”.

@Pepijn@mastodon.online Growing up on a dairy farm this was an entire game for my brother and I. Sneak up on cow, sit on cow, wait for her to get up and ride her around. It was a complex sport. Cows that were hardest to sneak up on gave the most exciting (if shortest) rides. Cows that would let you sit on them without protest generally were a bit dull (if they bothered getting up with you on at all.) Then there was the whole “how sharp is the backbone” grading system….

@ajroach42 I gave my child access to Roblox as a tween, with supervision. And I’ve given her alcohol too — little sips of something I was drinking, so she could see what it was. With supervision. I trust her to come to me when something makes her unhappy or uncomfortable, and she trusts me to listen to her and to only lay down limits and bans for good reasons. I call this “parenting” and I’m not perfect at it, but I’m doing a fuck of a lot better job than Peter Thiel’s algorithm could.

@cstross @ZachWeinersmith Off topic, but a podcast on the Scott expedition was how I found out just how bad scurvy was and what *specifically* it did. I still have occasional trauma flashbacks to “and then the scar from when he was sixteen opened up”….
