I live in rural #aotearoa/#newzealand in an earth brick house that looks like a Romanesque abbey. I spend my time coding, making electronic stuff, a bit of writing, some woodwork and a lot of gardening.
Weather permitting I kayak and hike.
I try to use my old, white, male privilege for good.
My header shows a mountain tarn on the Kepler track, with Te Anau in the distance (except the cloud got in the way). My profile is clipped from a shot taken on the Tongariro Crossing before I got tired.

My Matariki cake! It's basically a lemon blueberry cake (lemon and blueberries from our trees). The stars are made from icing coloured by the blueberries (not artificial colours).

Does anyone know if any languages have a word that expresses the regret that you didn't wash the dishes last night and have to face them today? Asking for a friend...

Google forced Gemini and AI Mode into Chrome; here's how to remove it from the browser

The newest version of Google Chrome displays AI features in the browser without any way to remove them. Fortunately, there's a workaround that will allow you to continue using Chrome without having to include the features imposed by Google.

@eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place when my sister was in hospital last year I noticed signs up telling us to mask up. Some of the staff had masks, but under their chins. Most didn't. One other visitor wore a surgical mask, I had my N95. My sister caught covid while she was there.

@paulh like you we've never had a dishwasher. My father was an early adopter of household gadgets so we got one when I was still a kid. I noticed that we went from everyone helping with the dishes to my mother spending at least as long stacking and rinsing. I don't know if there was a fault with the dishwasher or my mother but it made me hesitate to get one. However unlike you we've never been much good at getting them done the night before. It's usually next day.

@jiub@not.an.evilcyberhacker.net I forget who first said it but often the first (decent) editor you encounter will always be your favorite. For me it was editch running on pdp11s back in the mid 70s, but maybe that doesn't count as 'decent', it was designed to work on lineflow terminals after all. So the next one I met was vi, and I still use that. Never bothered with vim or emacs.

@elilla@transmom.love I have direct experience of this. There's a handwritten letter from my grandfather dated around 1914 that turned up in a box of stuff. It's in cursive and younger people are less familiar with cursive so a family member put it through chatgtp. The result was, as you'd expect, vaguely similar to what was written, with some alarming inaccuracies. And it missed the actual point he was writing about. I'm old enough to read cursive and I've had some recent experience making out other old writing in much worse hand, so I could read it quite well. A couple of words were hard to decipher but not impossible. So my conclusion was that the AI transcription was worse than useless.

@ShaulaEvans@zirk.us rain doesn't always run off the surface. Depends on mulch layers, dryness of soil. If there is a heavy downpour lots will run off, in a way snow doesn't, though snow might if it melts too quickly in the thaw.

@fluidlogic I can't say I thought about them much, other than the idea of taking a machine home rather than using it at the office. I got a PC and I mainly used it to dial into the VAX machines at work. I never gave the others (ie 8 bits) a thought. Then I had to do some programming on, by then, Windows 3. Had to jump through lots of hoops to do what I wanted in 16 bits.

@fluidlogic I worked on PDP 11s from the mid 70s to 1981 then onto Vax gear. So 16bits then 32 bits. It meant I got into 32 bits early and I wasn't interested in the PC machines. I did dabble in Windows towards the end of the 80s because a client wanted it and... only 16 bits? Are you kidding me?

@benbradley@hachyderm.io @Endof10@floss.social no, they are long gone. Whenever I upgrade I buy a new disk, these days it's an SSD, pop the existing one out of the machine, and put the blank one in there for the Linux install. The disk the machine came with goes into a drawer until the warranty expires. This means if I have a hardware issue, they can't blame my Linux install. Tbf I've never needed this, and I eventually overwrite that spare Windows drive with a Linux system or data etc.

@benbradley@hachyderm.io @Endof10@floss.social it's good to circulate these experiences. Mine is getting a bit old. I moved from XP to Ubuntu in 2005, and the same machine clocked in at 7x faster, as measured by the build I was frequently running. Never looked back. I convinced Mrs to move when XP support stopped. She's now happy on Lubuntu, which is closer to XPs look & feel.

@altomare@oldbytes.space this was up on the wall at my first real computer job in the late 70s, courtesy of a DEC engineer. A couple of years later, different job, and they decided to have the disks cleaned. My response was WTF, but it wasn't up to me. A few days after the clean, I came into the office to find one of the drives was screeching, and there were a lot of magnetic flakes everywhere. That drive had crashed quite horribly. Amazingly, the idiots who had insisted on the cleaning talked their way out of responsibility.

@benbradley@hachyderm.io @Endof10@floss.social I'm not saying it would void it, but it would give the tech a reason to blame something other than hardware. My current laptop had a problem with the display early on and it was fixed under warranty without my having to restore the original ssd.

@pixelpusher220@dmv.community @fatsam@mstdn.social pockets of survivors, I guess. As you observed earlier, after a short time, the quality degrades. Lots of people would just starve. The people who had stored food would last longer, but it would only be weeks for most. The ones prepared to raid others would not last very much longer. There's a huge overhead of traveling about finding who has/is food, then fighting for it. I don't think they'd last. I hope we never get to that state.

  • waterfowl visiting our pond. A pair of mallard and a pair of putangitangi
  • Mrs made lentil soup. Lovely on a cold day.
  • Rust, the language, is really nice to use. I've been building a UI which deploys in WASM and talks to a backend. Rust on both ends.

@tante@tldr.nettime.org that's what I got back in the 70s. Fees were paid because I passed the entrance exam. If I'd stayed in high school another year and passed some more exams I could have got scholarship money. Instead I worked & saved for a couple of years for a nest egg to cover cost of living. I did well enough first year to get scholarship for the rest. Scholarship money wasn't huge, so my nest egg plus holiday jobs were needed. I had no debt at the end. If I were doing this today I think the debt would put me off, I've always found debt scary.

@ElleGray@mstdn.social as a bit of an introvert and a recluse I may think about this differently. There are very few people I would lie awake at night worrying about. The people who do lie awake at night worrying about world hunger are probably literal saints, but I don't do that. I do know there are things that should be different, awful things that happen that shouldn't. But this feels more of an intellectual thing. Is there such a thing as intellectual empathy? It makes me donate money, write letters etc.
