I'm this close to telling AT&T to go fuck themselves. They are so greedy and find every excuse to add fees. My bill has been running double what they quoted me. I should just buy a $20 burner phone and save up for a good privacy focused Android or Linux phone.

Replying to
@oemb1905@gnulinux.social Not quite ephemeral vs persistent. More like: Self-hosted (Navidrome, Nicotine+) - Legal liability if you share publicly. Fine for personal use or trusted circles, but posting links broadly. You're hosting copyrighted material without redistribution rights. Corporate platforms (YouTube, SoundCloud, Spotify) - Surveillance, data extraction, ethical problems. But everyone's there, so links actually work for discovery. Federated (Funkwhale, etc.) - Ethically sound, no hosting liability if linking externally, but tiny userbase. Sharing a Funkwhale link is like sharing a Mastodon post in 2016. So "shitty" is forced to choose between legal risk, supporting surveillance capitalism, or shouting into the void. None are actually good options. What I am going to try to do for now on is ListenBrainz scrobbles (metadata only, no hosting) and external links when I need to share something specific. It's the least shitty compromise. It supports artists via plays, no legal exposure, but still relies on corporate platforms for the actual audio.

Thinking about my principles and the compromises I am willing to or currently make, #NoAI is one of the most important to me, especially in my operating system. I also consider privacy, digital sovereignty, right to repair, and social justice. But the use of LLMs is non-negotiable for me. Debian is currently considering its stance on LLMs going forward. This is one thing that would affect my decision to use Debian going forward. I love Debian. I love the Debian Social Contract. Debian is truly a good project. But passing Proposal B or D in the current vote would be going too far. Proposal A (complete ban) would be ideal. Proposal C (pragmatic with enforcement) would be acceptable. For more information on the vote: https://www.debian.org/vote/2026/vote_002 #NoAI #Debian #Linux #FOSS

@moses_izumi@fe.disroot.org @970uts1d3@defcon.social They are pretty anti-competitive.Their price-parity clauses in Valve's terms prevent developers from selling games cheaper on competing storefronts. If a developer wants to discount a game on Epic, GOG, or their own site, they must offer the same discount on Steam.

@oemb1905@gnulinux.social I appreciate your take. It is rare to see this discussed with actual legal understanding rather than fear. The ephemeral vs. persistent distinction is interesting, especially for link-sharing vs. hosting. And good point on privilege, not everyone has counsel to test these boundaries. I'll stick with my conservative approach for now, but I am curious: given your infrastructure experience, have you explored Funkwhale or similar federated music platforms? Seems like the tech exists, adoption is the blocker. Thanks for sharing your ListenBrainz! I need to set mine up in more places that I listen to stuff. I will be checking it out now.

I wish sharing music online wasn't so shitty. It all seems to be a choice of sharing the least shitty instead of the better option.

Brief Backrooms Review/Thoughts
I watched Backrooms. It wasn't great, kind of below average for an A24 movie. Chiwetel Ejiofor is a great actor and he gave a good performance, but the rest of it was mediocre.

@oemb1905@gnulinux.social I use Navidrome and it is fantastic. But I don't want to assume the legal responsibility of sharing music I don't have redistribution rights for. Not that I think it's wrong personally, but I'm also not trying to get sued.

If I miss a dose of my Seroquel, I don't go to sleep again, even for days, until I take it again. Finding the right meds is so hard. They work so differently for different people. The first time I had hallucinations was while on Vyvanse. It was so disappointing that drug didn't work for me. I am very impressed you are able to function like you do without anything.

@miss_rodent@girlcock.club I always enjoy reading your posts and rambles. Thank you for sharing this about yourself. Your story is fascinating. I find a lot of it relatable. I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 when I was about 13. My step-father decided I didn't need the meds. I never received any help until my mid-late 20's after meeting my partner. I understand what you mean by your brain being shattered and having to rebuild your identity. I've done this a few times, too.

Good news! My desktop came on. I'm not really sure what happened. Maybe its still a PSU issue. I finally got around to start trouble shooting it and it powered up. I'll do more troubleshooting later, just happy to have it on. I had moved my nvme's out of the desktop into the laptop, so I now need to reinstall Debian, but that is ok. Because of the frequent distro hopping, I have gotten good at keeping backups of everything.

@Tourma@tech.lgbt Things I would ask knowing "AI Bros" struggle to answer: Who bears legal responsibility when AI provides incorrect information that harms a patron (wrong legal advice, medical guidance, or immigration information)? What is our written protocol for documenting and reporting these errors? What specific patron data will be transmitted to AI vendors, what guarantees do we have that it won't be retained or used for training, and can we independently verify vendor compliance? What specific problem is AI solving that cannot be addressed with existing tools or additional staff? What metrics will determine success, and what would trigger discontinuation if those metrics aren't met? Will staff receive compensated time for AI training, oversight, and correction of AI outputs? How will the library ensure this doesn't become an unfunded mandate that increases workload without additional resources? These force them to commit to specific answers on record. Good luck.

RE: https://social.growyourown.services/@FediFollows/116970521760021938 The level of pedantry in the replies is unreal. I know the Linux/FOSS crowd can be pedantic, but come on. The Linux phone category is about phones running standard Linux systems, not Android/AOSP derivatives. What makes a Linux phone: Package managers (apt, pacman, apk)Standard GNU/Linux tooling without Android wrappersFOSS interfaces like Phosh or Plasma MobileNo Google/Apple app ecosystem dependency Actual options: @pine64 (PinePhone) - hardware made for Linux@volla - ships with Ubuntu Touch optionUsed Android phones repurposed with @postmarketOS or @mobian The honest tradeoff: These won't match Android/iOS for battery, call reliability, or app availability. The modem is still proprietary blob territory regardless. But the category matters because it is about what you can run and who controls it, not kernel semantics. If someone needs a daily driver and doesn't trust Google/Apple: repurposed Pixel with postmarketOS, or accept Android with hardened privacy settings. If they want to tinker/support the ecosystem: PinePhone. Both are valid depending on whether you need a phone that works or a phone you own. #Linux #Phone #FOSS

My final review on Devuan: It is fine. It is just Debian without systemd. If I had strong feelings about systemd (which I might in the future), I would probably use it instead. The best part about it is it is still Debian. Functions pretty much the same. Works great, just different. The worst part is the community has a lot of conspiracy types who think Debian is too "woke." It makes interacting with the community difficult. #Devuan
