Learned the hard way with #NetBSD : if you want the #gd and/or #ImageMagick libraries in PHP (commonly required if you're installing Wordpress or in my case, @movim@piaille.fr), one must install the X11 sets when installing NetBSD.

You can install them later using sysinst, however, have a back-up of your /etc handy, because it's real easy to accidentally blat your /etc config files with system defaults that will boot to single user mode with no sshd running.

@mgorny@social.treehouse.systems A few months ago I was wondering if reviving Pypy was an option… but replacing CPython is only part of the issue… it's all the other libraries like setuptools and friends… that are ingesting slop at an alarming rate.

This afternoon I found myself reading through the Lua reference manual to assess whether that might be worth trying as an alternative. Python seems cooked now.

Rather than roll the dice on yet another Chinese vendor… I'm taking a different tack.

I've acquired a roll of 0.3mm PVC.

https://www.bunnings.com.au/nuplastex-137cm-x-3-5m-0-30mm-crystal-clear-pvc-film-tablecloth-blinds-awnings_p0495783

It's a 3½m roll of the stuff, 1370mm wide. Should be enough.

There are five possible ways I can join pieces of it:

  • sew it, then use seam sealer (as suggested by @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org)
  • glue it / chemical welding (what I was thinking of initially)
  • thermal welding
  • ultrasonic welding
  • RF welding

Whilst I have devices that can put 100W of RF anywhere between 1.8MHz and 29MHz… I don't think my radio finals will take too kindly to this sort of abuse… and a RF welding rig is likely well outside my price range.

Ultrasonic rigs are up around the AU$700+ mark… pricey for a one-off.

Thermal welding rigs need to get to 300°C… soldering iron territory. I have an old Jaycar one that has temperature control and a somewhat buggered tip. Might be an option here.

I'll try a small sample of material and see what works.

Been looking around ever since on this front. Found a few identical capes that look like they came from the exact same factory… all from German web shops that specialise in BDSM gear. AliExpress has something promising, but ugh… I hate dealing with AliExpress. With A Passion. They're worse to deal with than Amazon! Granado Australia (another Chinese outlet) seem to have something promising. I'm seriously thinking a trip over the hill to Bunnings to buy some clear sheet PVC and figuring out how to do my own plastic welding is going to be a safer bet!

Silly electronics question for people… I'm building a circuit that needs to drive a LED dot matrix panel, which means I need a beefy 5V DC-DC power supply to step down from 12V.

I found a suitable candidate: the Meanwell NID100-5. 5V 11A output. I'll be using it next to radio equipment, so class-B filtering is very desirable. The NID100 can be used without filtering for class-A (industrial) applications, but for class-B you need filters.

Below is the recommended circuit. I'm a little stumped with the inductor. This is not a symbol I'm familiar with. It is taken from the datasheet: https://configurable.meanwell.com/webapp/product/search.aspx?prod=NID100

  • https://www.reddit.com/r/ElectricalEngineering/comments/a853u2/what_does_this_inductor_symbol_mean/ suggests it's a "differential mode inductor"
  • https://www.eevblog.com/forum/projects/meanwell-nid100-dcdc-module-inductor-selection/ calls it a common-mode choke

The literature I can find says a differential mode inductor has two terminals, this appears to be a four-terminal device with two coils, mutually coupled somehow.

Right now I have a Kicad schematic with a Wurth Electric 7448421016 subbed in there: https://www.we-online.com/components/products/datasheet/7448421016.pdf

Is this the right type of filter here? Should maybe the connections on FL1 be swapped around to invert the phase? (e.g. swap pins 2 & 3, or 1 & 4)

#Electronics #MeanwellNID100

reddit

What does this inductor symbol mean?
