@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social I was entering Zion National Park in Utah the other day, it was a long line. The group of four in front of me were interrogated by the park ranger if they were US residents. They said they weren't. She then pointed at this sign and informed them they'd have to produce $400 to enter the park. They turned around and left, upset. This xenophobic garbage started life as a Trump executive order, and has the stench of Stephen Miller all over it. #uspol #trump #maga

A few days at Berkeley visiting family and the spouse's old uni. People's Park is now a giant building still under construction (surrounded by a fence borrowed from a maximum security prison). A winning strategy in the War on Cars is to have parking signs so confusing that car owners dare not risk actually parking.

Never thought I'd see the day when the United States is a coin flip away from allying with Russia and North Korea in an illegal invasion of another country.

Might be time for all ranks of all US services to re-familiarize themselves with the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the US Constitution, and the outcome of the Nuremberg trials.

It might just be me, but I've found local TV news coverage of the LA fires to be mostly terrible. It's low on information and high on disaster porn/drama, and a fair bit of it has been wildly misleading. They cannot shake their bog standard reporting templates for this critical event.

- On-scene reporters asking people who are literally running around putting out spot fires at their house if they could stop for an interview.
- Picking through the ashes of houses and putting burnt photo albums and other destroyed personal items on camera.
- Certain helicopter reporters yelling mostly low information nonsense for half an hour.
- Obviously wholly unqualified opining on emergency response, and evacuations that has caused massive confusion (no, NBC4, all of LA isn't under a boil-water alert from the DWP).

There's an opportunity here for local TV news to be a useful asset for the community, and they're all too frequently blowing it.

John Bolton has thoughts about the US conducting a ground invasion in Iran. I'm sure you can guess what they are.

Here's John Bolton's thoughts on why he personally skipped out on the US ground invasion of Vietnam:

"I confess I had no desire to die in a Southeast Asian rice paddy. I considered the war in Vietnam already lost."

@anne_twain @jhaue My offer to answer questions was more along the lines of:

  1. Do I need to install an expensive level 2 charging station at home? Probably not.
  2. Do I need an (expensive) EV with 600km range? Probably not.
  3. After a decade, how much has your battery degraded? About 5% as far as I can tell. New battery chemistry is even better. Your battery will outlast your EV.
  4. What is your cost-to-own vs a petrol car. About 20% of the cost of ownership of a petrol car, roughly. I still have the factory brake pads installed from 2015.

Stuff like that.

I am always shocked at the slow uptake in EVs in Victoria when I'm back there. I can only hope an influx of cheap EVs from China changes this situation.

New York Times giving it the old college try at both-sidesing Iran history.

Of course they fail to explicitly mention the US government org that got the ball rolling to the 1979 revolution. Hint, it starts with a C and ends with an A.

I used to commute Hwy 17 out of Santa Cruz county about 30 years ago. It was a major commute road back then, and still is now. Through to the 1940s there was a train line over roughly the same route, and in the 1990s there was talk of reopening the line for commuters.

Back then various locals managed to shut down any chance of the rail being restored. And of course Hwy 17 is still the dangerous nightmare it was 30 years ago.

And they are still fiddling with Hwy 17 trying to reduce (but never stop) the carnage.

Will be heading into a measles hotspot (yes Utah, looking at you) in a month or so and asked an Australian expert what my vaccination situation is likely to be.

She informed me that Australians born before 1966 are generally not vaccinated against measles.

The assumption for people born before 1966 is that given how contagious measles is, it's almost impossible that they haven't already been infected during childhood and therefore have antibodies.

(In my neck of the Australian woods the measles vaccine became widely available starting in 1969.)
