For those following along, grape jelly making was a success! Six jars plus a tester. It jelled! Only got to 218 °F before a cold plate test looked like it was boiled enough. I was hesitant to take it further since friend’s jelly with these grapes went to hard candy (they boiled by time, not temp). It’s so dense, its almost black. It’s not completely clear either. The twice filtered and settled juice had an almost satiny appearance. But wow! I tense flavor! Calling this a win!

This is not something I’ve seen before, older boys educating younger ones about consent, supporting a girl when she was not fully aware of what was going on, focusing on educating everyone involved on how actions impact others. And they didn’t make a big deal about it, but also didn’t let it slide. A thing happened, it was not ok, here is what we do about it. The other female leader with me (who is 69 and seen some shit) just marveled at the awareness of these kids. It’s pretty great. 4/4

They helped her think about it from a different perspective, how even if this was fairly innocent, what if it wasn’t? What would she do, what would they have done. Then the scouts who were on the bus together, who saw what happened, who took some action then, decided they should let an adult know, and went themselves to the camp director to report it, not so much to get the other scout in trouble, but so a staffer could talk about why his actions were a problem and teach about consent. 3/4

One of the things he did was to touch one of my young female scouts and take her photo(or pretend to). He wasn’t apparently trying to touch her in sexual way, but just touching her. He did other things, too. It wasn’t until my scouts were sitting at dinner and talking about this and some of the older boys who hadn’t been there pointed out that this was not ok. “No one should touch you without your consent!” 2/4

Spent a few days with an old college friend and their partner at a cottage on an island in a northern lake. Utterly delightful. Laughter, deep, thoughtful conversation about books, music, how we move through the world. Great food, fabulous bird watching (fall warblers moving through that none of us could ID, causing more laughter). Giant moon, stars, loon song. Refreshing and restoring.

@WanderingHuman@cosocial.ca yep! I was really happy with how the kids handled this. More interesting to me, the staff person’s response at first was “I will make him apologize to you!” And the kids were like, naw, forced appologies aren’t meaningful. Just talk to him about how touching people or taking their photo without their consent is a problem and why. The kids are better informed than the adults!

But you know, I also appreciate helping carry the weight of your grief, the worry about a loved one, the concern for how you will find the strength to move forward in the world. I don’t think there are any billionaires here, but I’m happy to contribute a bit when I can to easing your passage in the world knowing many others will help too. It’s hard to see so many struggling, the inherent unfairness of the world. But seeing the hands and heart open to helping is a balm.

Last night as I was going to bed, I noticed a small plane circling overhead. Very annoying. Over and over and over.
Mentioned it to oldest who figured out who it was, where from and likely was an infrared imaging survey for deer. There are so many deer! But, supporting bobcat and coyote populations too. So ok?

Spicebush swallowtails feeding on the flower buffet at #Area51. Edit: they are Black Swallowtails! Looking more closely, far more yellow spots in wing edge and they were acting very suspicious on the dill, a host plant for the caterpillars.

@flyhigh@universeodon.com I agree. It usually knocks me out for a day. if I get the vax mid morning, I’m ok that day then groggy the next, fine by the next after that. Way way better than having covid.

About to go have an educational discussion with my scouts and leaders who menstruate about how to deal with that on a camping trip, in the back county, at summer camp. The adults invited have overwhelmingly been thrilled and eager to share the lore, grateful we are doing this. The scouts, well, mostly middle school age where the entire world is hugely embarrassing. Let’s see if we can make it less so.

One of my favorite times at #Area51 is when the swallows show up. Usually at dusk, but apparently midday too. In the video you can hear car noise on the road, but barn swallows, grey cat birds, a common yellow throat, song sparrow and maybe goldfinches. Really need to get a bee/wasp person out here, too and a lepidopterist.

@Janet_52square@sunny.garden @tempusfelix@wehavecookies.social I’ve had there here for twenty years at the house for flower and veg beds. Works well. I should look into installing a solar powered pump to run them off the rain barrel. My biggest issue is forgetting where they are and accidentally severing them when planting, but have found them to be fairly easily repairable. Ideally, will need to install at the allotment, too.
