Prediction: Now that modern computing is going the way it goes (pricing, "AI", the bunch of rich ignorants running the show), I guess we are going to see another renaissance of #vintagecomputing #permacomputing and #retrocomputing. And I’m absolutely and utterly here for that.

If I see a genAI slop thumbnail for your YouTube video, I won’t watch it. If I see a genAI slop picture or text in your blogpost, I won’t read it. If I see a vibe coded game, I won’t play it. I like human created stuff. Imperfections are good. They are personal. They are art.

Programming the little tool actually REALLY transported me back in time. Because that’s just what we did before you could just download everything from the internet. You encountered a (computer) problem, you programmed a solution. Or at least you tried. Feels good.

I had a weird dream last night about a #Commodore flip phone! No idea where that came from, maybe I had too much coffee in the afternoon or something. Anyway, back to reality now. 😅

Haha, the next #Amiga3000T video is going to sound like pure clickbait. "You won’t believe what the fault was!" I certainly didn’t. Took me a while (and a magnifier) to figure it out. Video coming soon! 🫠

I deleted all social media apps from my phone quite a while ago, except for Mastodon and Bluesky (well, and the YouTube Creators thing - for obvious reasons). All notifications are deactivated. I blocked phone calls/messages from numbers that I don’t have in my phonebook. Emails are only downloaded when I open the app. It’s a peaceful life. Follow me for more "digital detox" life hacks!

In an attempt to escape the miserable real world, I am going down the rabbit hole of learning how to crack #C64 games currently. Prepare for some n00b warez soon (if I can figure it out, that is). Definitely a fun way of wasting time so far. #ObsoleteSkills

Remember the DolphinDOS x JiffyDOS patch for the #C64? It uses some of the superior disk routines from Dolphin with the Jiffy fastloader so you don’t need a parallel cable (just the Jiffy ROM in the disk drive). I just put it on my #C64Ultimate. Also: rainbow startup screen! https://csdb.dk/release/?id=137270

Taking a little break after ~6 hours of refurbishing/repairing datasettes. So far, 3 out of 3 1531s (the grey ones) work fine again and I even managed to load Cobra on the one that had a "Cobra" Dymo label on it… 😅 #InTheLabDoingStuff

RE: https://oldbytes.space/@video_play/116516842647875696 Still one of the most helpful websites for C64 repair! (If you get video output at all. A blank screen on a C64 can be caused by almost anything.)

You can also just run a slightly modified version of DolphinDOS on the #C64Ultimate, as it turns out. It is WAY faster than any JiffyDOS derivatives (but doesn’t have a rainbow startup screen). Here’s the variant I’m currently using: https://github.com/donnchawp/DolphinDOS2

Any free Linux DAWs out there that work reliably with Wayland (I tried Ardour but it keeps crashing)? Running Kubuntu on an elderly MacBook Pro 2015 here and would love to do some basic multitrack recording/editing, using some software instruments & plugins. Audacity/Tenacity are a bit too basic.

It’s Bandcamp Friday! Reminder that my old band‘s recordings are available for free there (or you can donate a few coins if you like). It’s kind of 80s-influenced indie pop with modern twists. I played the bass, wrote most lyrics and some music. We split up in late 2008. https://theseathesea.bandcamp.com

@82mhz I quite enjoyed Brian Bagnall‘s "Commodore - A Company on the Edge". Some of it is maybe not 100% historically accurate (I guess none of the available books are really) but it captures the spirit of the micro computer heyday very well.

@yuman@defcon.social Oh, I do care. It’s actually meant as an sarcastic quip regarding the current state of YouTube (and other clickbait). It’s not clickbait in this case, which makes it funny in my opinion (at least for the people who‘ve been following my stuff). I despise clickbait myself (and have said so often) so it‘s a bit of an inside joke for my audience. Sorry if that is distracting (but I’d guess you probably don’t know what I usually do anyway).

@mos_8502 JiffyDOS and DolphinDOS work just fine with the game. That’s all the speeders I have installed currently. I can test more stuff/hardware combos if needed. That’s what a Beta (and a beta version) is for, after all. ;) Side note: I think you can put the FCIII/ActionReplay crt images into VICE and try them there.

@mos_8502 One little thing I noticed: the game doesn't want to start up when I'm using the Final Cartridge III fastloader. It just resets to BASIC when it tries to load the additional files from the disk image after RUNning. Works flawlessly with the fastload disabled. (I used an original C64 with the 1541 Ultimate cart, going to test with other hardware combinations soon.)

@yon There are several different programming languages available on cartridges and as ROMs for the C64, Simons BASIC probably being the most widely used one back in the day (it’s a much better BASIC than the original with dedicated commands for graphics and sound, very fun to use). :)

@retrosponge "Floating on light"? Lol. They just made the transparent PCB a little too thin would be my guess. It looks amazing though. ;) It’s quite expensive indeed, I was only able to afford it thanks to some very generous donations from my followers (which is of course a massive privilege and I’m super grateful for). Pricing is alright compared to putting one together from the individual parts (keyboard, case, Ultimate 64 board). It’s less expensive than its parts, so that’s something.
