We also ran up to Embree and Little Burnt Bay today, which is about the same distance as Hillgrave, but the other direction, both lying north of Lewisporte. This is the hulk of the HMS Calypso, which was one of the last Royal Navy sailing corvettes, however it also had a steam engine It was on my list of things to check out because it served as a training ship for the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve pre-WWI, so somewhat near and dear to my heart as an RCN reservist.

Taking advantage of a rainy down day at the cottage in Newfoundland to finish getting the newly rebuilt portable system set up for digital. Mostly just getting direwolf and fldigi set up, nothing crazy or difficult, I just didn't have time before we left.

I'll think about throwing a wire in the tree later on this aft, if I figure out how to waterproof (lol..water resist) the EFHW's balun with the materials I have on hand if needed.

@MostlyHarmless You'd think it exotic, and maybe glamorous, but it sure sounds like a lot of work: "This is the story of a con man who couldn't stop lying. A tale of murder, stolen identities, fine art, a diaper stuffed with gold bars, and a crime solved by a Rolex watch. From rural Canada to coastal England, he lied and deceived at every turn." https://www.cbc.ca/newsinteractives/features/sea-of-lies It was a good podcast series: https://www.cbc.ca/listen/cbc-podcasts/2031-sea-of-lies
Sea of lies

Sea of lies

Albert Walker was once Canada’s most wanted man. More than 30 years later, his name may have faded from the public eye, but he remains one of the country’s most prolific swindlers. His tale is one of audacious deception involving multiple stolen identities, millions of dollars in fraud and even a murder in the U.K. But it’s also a story defined by a streak of luck.

@yo3gnd I know right...at the very least, pop over to the community mailing list and say hey, we're giving you one more kernel release to nominate a maintainer and get a roadmap together to solve these three things... And then say "if you need some help learning how to work with the kernel team, we are here to coach you" That's what a healthy community would do. And maybe it wouldn't be enough..but hands were tentatively being raised, and I think the situation could have been stabilized.

@chris@socialbc.ca Not free; society paid for that transition through previous energy rates, taxes, or some other mechanism. BUT that's the best part of the story, truly - it demonstrates that whole-of-society level change to energy production and distribution is possible, and happening.

54.8067 kHz run. Warm, midges, breezy. Standout music track was Second Skin by the Gits. The guitar tone on the "Live at The X-Ray" version of this song is fantastic - so much better than the studio version.

@W1CDN @Geojoek I guess it depends on how you set it up? For the higher bands, yeah, you could lump them all into the untrapped portion of a longer wire? Reading more, it seems like a multi-trapped EFHW with more than one or two traps is also a frustrating thing to tune properly as the traps interact with each other, so I think you are right, not all the bands would be half wave like I envisioned in my head.

@corpsedoll@pl.kotobank.ch @pachli@mastodon.social @mike@thecanadian.social There's no institutional power in this model, imo, compared to the harms you rightfully point out on server-side block lists/bans, which _are_ under institutional control, and could result in people being cut off from wide swaths of the fediverse, and chased around by blocklisters as they move instances.

@corpsedoll@pl.kotobank.ch @pachli@mastodon.social @mike@thecanadian.social "where people managing the blocklist have some level of institutional power, marginalized people get readily thrown under the bus and shitlisted if they are too inconvenient for the manager" With these collections, the choice to follow a collection, or block a collection is an end-user choice exclusively. The choice to appear on a collection is similarly at the exclusive discretion of the account holder.

@mike@thecanadian.social @pachli@mastodon.social IMO, this is a client side choice; don't dictate how people consume the fediverse. I fail to see how lobbying against client side featureset in the fediverse model has any upside at all.

@rocky1138 it will cause changes in other parts of the Linux network stack, they will have already stubbed bits of code out to handle the removal of AX.25, so it's not impossible to have it come back, but probably not as easy as one would assume either.
