I like esoterica. Throw weird embedded electronics designs at me, along witb RF oddities or more exotic hobbies.

I made a thing.

https://github.com/yo3gnd/flipper-zero-aprs-tx

It uses Flipper's onboard radio to transmit APRS and I am still surprised that it works.

I’ve used #VailCW rather a lot while learning CW and recently dug up two older projects that seemed worth putting back in the light. It is a small attempt to give something back to a system I found genuinely excellent. And broadly, my tiny contribution to FOSS.

One is a CW adapter that speaks Vail over MIDI on a $2 Digispark, with USB and a local sidetone buzzer. It's faster than a keyboard with no audio delay.

Ever ended up with a POCSAG pager that has only a partial RIC and, at best, a hand-wavy clue about where it is tuned? I wrote this for exactly that sort of nonsense: https://github.com/yo3gnd/pocsag-probe. It works. Eventually.

I'm looking for 5 #ham #ham_radio operators that get all excited at the thought of a ssb #pileup, to help me beta test something. Some experience and entertainment derived from working pileups would help.

@iFixit@mastodon.social Here is how to locate your breaker panel. It is an elegant but effective single-shot arrangement: one induced trip, then a manual breaker reset before the exercise can be repeated.

@scott Having quite recently wrote an AX25 minimal stack, and shamelessly using kernel code for my initial tests, the only thing I can say is https://media1.tenor.com/m/LLu6EdwJk3sAAAAC/big-oof-size.gif

@DJ5CW@social.darc.de Yeah it's "VPS cloud/ddos protection" but they rarely tell you what it actually does. When you reach the bandwidth cap, this is the exact behaviour. They are protecting their network in your detriment, against a supposed DDoS. 'grats on building something that needed such scaling up, and thank you for keeping lcwo alive - it's also where I learnt CW.

@profoundlynerdy@bitbang.social The routine was: stop it, retune it, wait for the PLL, start it again, and repeat until morale collapsed. FT8 (on flipper!) was no better. The 6.25 baud symbol rate is easy enough; the awkward bit is that FT8 wants 6.25 Hz tone spacing, while the CC1101 moves in roughly 1 kHz lumps. So that went nowhere. I expect a better hack is just around the corner?

8-hour ASA print at the nicer quality setting; five-minute triple fuckup. The dog ate the supports, then thoughtfully returned them after what one might describe as a strongly worded letter, and the precision Stanley 199 went through the part and straight into one of my dickbeaters. The overall colour scheme - puke and blood - ended up faintly Load/Reload; still, the important thing is that it was very carefully optimised: four perimeters in ASA ought to beat six in ABS.

The APRS transmitter had been out in the wild for perhaps a fortnight before LU3ARN had already pressed its frame generator into service with an SA818 and, rather impressively, added receive as well, complete with software demodulation and frame assembly on the ADC side. https://github.com/reynico/flipper-818-aprs

@profoundlynerdy@bitbang.social I rather doubt it. I did try the obvious stupid thing: writing the CC1101frequency registers fast enough to fake FM. It was dreadful. Throwing the carrier about produced unpredictable harmonics, and the chip needed to be “pre-heated” or it would drift after a short 100% duty cycle. Very valve wireless, much wow. Even at its best, the update rate was poor enough to be ornamental.
