@djlink@mastodon.gamedev.place Then you realize that "chopping the carrots" has at least 5 different definitions of it, and the recipe doesn't specify any. Next, there are so many ways to heat and boil them in that stew: do you add water, how much oil, too much oil will make them mushy, too few and they stick to the pan. Too hot and they get roasted, not hot enough will blow your electricity bill. No, cooking is JUST LIKE programming: give fucking precise specs.

If a project has some minor releases during the year, and a lot of patch releases, like at least one per month, what do you think it means about the project's health?

Note:
- 📊 Sharing allows more consistent data!
- 💬 Commenting allows for a broader view that's more exhaustive than checkboxes.
- 🙏 Since I can't make 2 polls in one post, please only check 1 box per release type (patch / minor), thank you!

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca with component-based frontend tools, it's now easy to scope css for a single component with basic CSS classes, and just analyse potential double usage of certain rules in order to create one additional common CSS stylesheet. Been doing that for a while without tailwind and it's perfect (and I'm more of a Bootstrap old timer 🤣)

This kind of change only occurred with revolutional technology. Agriculture, wheel, paper, photography, electricity, radio, TV, internet, now AI, all of them brang the exact same promise: "a better world". But they also allowed the owners, landlords, the overall richest people, to hoard everything and justify their power on nonsensical virtual stuff, while exploiting the proletariate, creating more poor people.

I'm not saying that it's a form of individual weakness, but it's definitely a mark of weakness from people thinking the same relative to the power in place. If you re-read "1984" or "The Handmaid's Tale" again, you'll see we can fight while "collaborating".

EDIT: I found everything I need now!

--- previous post:

Apparently I found a job for January 2026 (Party time! And it's a great position🎉), but in the meantime I've got nothing and I'm broke.

If you remember well, almost a month ago I said "If I don't find something in 30 days (...)" , well, these 30 days are quite soon now.

I just need something until the end of 2025.

@afilina I've always secretly hoped for smarter people to find a real way to estimate the value of the renovation skills we have, but I think it's not possible. We do it, we know it's better, we have arguments, but it's hard to convince people... And when you succeed, it's even harder to fund it.

@afilina The job you've been doing for your career is the most noble one in tech: fix things, repair, enhance, teach and help. The problem is that company owners are mostly "build fast and break things", which includes "cheap & bad". The things we do has no numberable value, because it's impossible to do actual scientific research on refactoring, change of workflow, or progressive migrations. You can only do it a posteriori for one project, and hope it's gonna be good for it, and the next one.

@tipiak75 Architecture, the problem-solving process, the knowledge of the ecosystem, which 3rd-party tools are okay to use and which ones are not, how to fix bugs that have never been reported and that AI can't fix in less than hundreds of thousands of tokens, thinking about all the possible edge-cases for a requested feature, etc. AI can't do all this, it's just impossible. It might help, but only seniors will think about training an agent for these. Juniors will prompt "implement all cases".

@heiglandreas@phpc.social @mintopia@phpc.social Same here: prod debug for me is mostly reading logs, reproducing issue locally, and fixing it locally. xdebug, on the other hand... I agree: setting it up is sometimes easy, sometimes a true hassle. I only use it in CLI mode when running test suites, because it's usually easier to configure, but right now with the project I'm working on, I still can't set it up, it just doesn't work with my IDE, and it's extremely annoying because I can't step-debug tests 😭

Package managers, libraries, deployment tools, EVERYTHING can be used for that. Even the "just fork it" won't be useful: if too many tools are unavailable even for a few days, big corps can't compete, it'll cost them too much. They'll comply.

All of us. Because we're either small entrepreneurs, or employees, and we have no power. If we were "in charge", we could definitely have more power on the decisions. But everyone is dependent on GAFAMs, AI providers, and all tech that's built by engineers and owned by big corps. Even Open Source doesn't help because OSS itself has no power on anything.

Certain western countries could donate 100k€ or 200k€ each per year to a nonprofit org that creates a public browser (let's start with firefox), countries people vote for features, priority is given to BC policy, cross compatibility and stability. I know, it's end-of-the-year-utopia but still..

@zenbrowser You'll continue to do so until you get substantial funding from a big corp that will make you depend on this funding and therefore comply to all their AI tantrums. You should also protect yourself from big corp funding mayhem, because that's pretty much what happened with Github when bought by 'crosoft, and Firefox when bought by, well, big AI-maniac funding tech bros.

The money big corps will lose is much higher, by lots of orders of magnitude, and trust me, if you join with even 10, 20, 30 other OSS-leading maintainers, you'll win. Definitely.

@kytta Google Maps has my address wrong too, because one part of the road is inaccessible to cars, and the name of my very small village is spelled wrong, I asked to change stuff there many times, the only thing they accepted was the streets names (streets were unnamed up until 2022-2023). I'm annoyed that they accepted streets names update but not the village name itself. Streets were easy to update but I have no idea for the village? 🤔

All it needs is constant fat-rich feeding, but I'm pretty sure some DIY nerd has built an automated 3D-printed cat-powered-bagpipe feeder
