@benpate@mastodon.social i can think of worse companies to host with tbh. Funnily enough these same people probably don't get that a significant portion of the fediverse is actually behind cloudflare's CDNs. I think these "do as I say" holier than thou types are the bane of the decentralised web. Like, if I wanted to drive people away from open social projects, that's exactly how I'd do it: hire a small group of people to consistently be assholes to other's. It's like 101 from the CIA field guide to sabotage 🚩

Contrary to seemingly popular belief, FediMod FIRES and the protocol I created for it is so much more than just "blocklist synchronisation" It's designed to give moderation teams choice in what they pull from providers and how that's applied to their server. It's designed to give finer-grained moderation control than "silence or suspend" across a wide array of entities. Thinking of FediMod FIRES as just a blocklist synchronisation tool is like thinking of a computer as a just a modern typewriter. Sure you can just do what that original thing did, but it's capable of so much more. For example, it's possible to share moderation data on individual bad actors and also on email domains (currently not in the shipped version but pretty straightforward to add). In the future it'll also support more entity types like Hashtags, Links, and possibly image hashes. Domain blocks are just the tip of the iceberg of what FediMod FIRES can do.

Hey friends, so my friend's a musician called girli, and she's been producing music for 10 years, and she's now 250 sales away from a top-40 album position in the UK charts.

You help her by ordering via her website: https://girlimusic.com/

Say what you want about the Bluesky/Attie/Graze situation, but let's be real: Graze wouldn't even be allowed to exist on the fediverse, especially when the dominant player (Mastodon) has 10x or 100x the funding of everyone else and whilst they could implement custom feeds they've been deciding not to.

If memory serves, @newsmast@backend.newsmast.org received push back on attempting to bring custom feeds to the fediverse back in 2024.

Some servers opted to run forks to get them, and a whole heap of people use phanpy because of it's amazing custom catch-up feed.

You can pretend the power dynamics on the fediverse are different, but they're really not: you have one dominant player that gets to decide everyone else's features.

We're now actively seeing attrition on people contributing to the ActivityPub Trust & Safety taskforce because we've failed to secure funding to pay people to do the required work, which is to the detriment of the entire fediverse. It is not pretty or headline catching work, but it is necessary work that underpins the very social fabric of the fediverse. It's now been 205 days since I submitted an application with @nlnet@social.nlnet.nl to try to secure funding for this work. That's almost 7 months. The only update I've received to date was on 9th March 2026 that simply stated "your project "ActivityPub Trust & Safety Taskforce" (2025-12-371) has been selected to enter the second round of the December 2025 call" The email did include "Note that proposals are reviewed with regards to urgency, relevance and value for money.", so my only logical conclusion is that NLNet does not see trust & safety work as urgently needed, relevant or value for money 🤷🏻‍♀️ Maybe there's another funding organisation that wants to fund the taskforce? So far I haven't seen an appropriate fund.

@aleksei@social.fakeplastictrees.ee @_elena@mastodon.social because that's just marketing it seems. From what I've been told their API (app view) just proxies bluesky's API, so when bluesky's infrastructure had a rate limit trip (one that's designed to protect against spam & network abuse), that data stopped flowing to the rest of Bluesky's infrastructure (and anyone else who depended on their infrastructure). Usually this isn't a problem, and dropping a message to various network operators gets the problem fixed in no time at all.

@nileane there's been some vague posts about this, but you generally don't talk about impacts of active attacks as they happen since you don't want to let the attackers know what is an isn't working. So yeah, it's understandable if a service goes offline when there's people actively trying to knock it offline. Fedi has only infrequently faced this

Replying to
@trampinheavy@mastodon.social that is a "risk" with all moderation data. Only use data providers you trust. If you don't have strong trust for their judgement, then you should be able to review manually, rather than apply automatically. So yes, people can be blocked across multiple instances, entire instances can be blocked. That's nothing new, between existing CSV blocklists and the fediblock hashtag. What this does differently is that it has both positive and negative signals: Accept this content, Filter this content, Reject/Drop this content. It also encourages data providers to use labelling to add metadata to their blocks, so you can say "I trust IFTAS on CSAM but I don't want their recommendations on other topics. And, most importantly: It supports retractions as a native part of the protocol: If someone or an instance is blocked, then they can become unblocked later; this is a lot harder to do with CSV files.

@andypiper@macaw.social @_elena@mastodon.social my take on it is that the politicians want to control the means by which people can be social, because that provides them with immense power: https://bsky.app/profile/thisismissem.social/post/3moilbymuyc2y
Bluesky Social

Emelia (@thisismissem.social)

Most people getting into social do not do it for the benefit of society, but rather to control & own the social fabric that supports society. If you control the social platform, you can control the conversation. You then have enormous political power.

@Setok @nileane we have had coordinated attacks spanning hundreds of servers, maybe thousands. There's a lot you maybe haven't seen. The federated nature of the fediverse does not make it magically resilient against attacks from a motivated attacker Relays are extremely important for small instances, and it's just an example of how there's infrastructure and things that could be attacked in new ways that we may not even know yet how such could cascade. Heck, just posting a popular post or posting a link to a server can knock a bunch off. On top of that, the fediverse is extremely underfunded in terms of security & trust and safety.
