#mathober is starting today – one math prompt per day to express yourself in some way! https://www.fractalkitty.com/mathober-2026-prompts/ Day 1: "Perimeter of an Ellipse" Calculating the perimeter requires elliptic integrals. But I learned about a pretty efficient method to approximate it, which uses the arithmetic-geometric mean! In my drawing, all ellipses have the same perimeter! Imagine squishing and stretching a piece of wire. Coded in #p5js, then drawn using #krita. #math #mathober2026

Are you ready? October is right around the corner and you know what that means? Mathober! This years prompts are on the website mathober.com and below. If you are new to Mathober, no worries, you can jump right in. Each day there is a word or phrase for you

I'm writing a small tool that helps you find your most liked/boosted toots or threads, from an archive of your Mastodon account! I wanna use it in combination with https://codeberg.org/blinry/threadcat to find popular threads to turn into blog posts. 1) What features would you like to see in a tool like this? It already supports CSV and JSON export, any other formats? What statistics would be important for you per toot/thread? 2) I'm still thinking about a good name. tootstat? topthread? bestpost?
Codeberg.org

threadcat

Converts a Mastodon thread to Markdown, and downloads all contained media files.

The circular screen arrived! It's a 7-inch one from Waveshare. Being able to livecode on my clock makes me very happy right now! :D Implemented the minute pause of the Swiss railway clocks, thanks to @Fluyar@social.tchncs.de for the hint!

This one was inspired by @elbosso@mastodon.social – it's a "zoomed in" clock face, and because of the zoom, you only need one handle to have a lot of precision! Between two ticks, it's 10 minutes. https://clocks.blinry.org/scale/

Weston (the old reference implementation of a Wayland compositor managed by the @XOrgFoundation@floss.social) was the first compositor I realized had real multi-seat support! You can configure input devices to belong to different "seats" using udev rules (see the blog post for details on how to set that up), and that'll give you multiple mouse cursors with independent window interactions! If you assign keyboard to the seats, you can also *type* into different windows, which feels very cool!

Can someone recommend a cozy Mastodon instance for hosting bot accounts? Mourning botsin.space today. Would like to give future #fedifriends bots a better home, and maybe build a nostalgia bot that retoots my old toots randomly...

But also, I'm excited to tell you that https://swaywm.org (a popular clone of @i3wm@fosstodon.org) has *great* built-in multi-seat support out of the box! ✨ You can configure the seats dynamically using `swaymsg seat assign `. There's an open issue https://github.com/swaywm/sway/issues/3491 that makes it less useful, but I wrote a small patch https://github.com/blinry/sway/tree/one-seat-per-device to fix it. #sway

Note that this blog post is about so-called "logical" seats! This is where multiple people are in front of one computer, and each have their own mouse/keyboard, but they control the same desktop environment. This is in contrast to "physical" seats, where every "seat" has their own independent setup (including their own screen and desktop environment).

We wrote a tool that helps you coordinate which talks to watch with your friends!

Giggity (an open-source conference schedule viewer for Android) recently got a new feature: You can share your bookmarked events as a URL!

So @piko@chaos.social and I built a website that compares multiple of these URLs and shows you how they overlap!

Let us know what you think! We got it working just in time for #gpn24! 😅

This was the first time I looked deeper into Wayland actually *is*! At its heart, it’s a collection of protocols. I was really happy to find that the core "wayland" protocol (that graphical programs and the Wayland compositor use to talk to each other) has deeply integrated multi-seat support! Which is an awesome basis! 5/5 stars! :D ★★★★★ But for multi-seat to work, it has to be supported throughout the stack. So how well do Wayland compositors actually use these concepts?

The next step towards multi-seat applications is having support for it in the GUI toolkits/graphics libraries!

To my surprise, @GTK@floss.social has excellent built-in support, at least conceptually! Events have a get_seat method, which directly tell you which Seat an event belongs to.

Most GTK widgets don't really respect multi-seat input, of course…

So I wrote an experimental MultiSeatText widget that tracks multiple independent text cursors: https://codeberg.org/blinry/gtk-multi-seat-text-widget

I've been practicing to put my face in the water every day, and it's getting easier. One thing that really helped was getting swimming goggles! Not having water in my eyes helps me focus on breathing. For practicing, I slowly graduated from the tiny warm relaxation pool to a pool used to teach swimming, and then to the 25-meter, which is often less busy. On Monday, I managed to swim the full 25 meters in breast stroke, with my face going in the water for each stroke for the first time! 💚

I want to add that this topic has caused me some sleepless nights last month, and made me feel quite sad/angry/anxious/disappointed/disillusioned… I figure many of you might feel similarly? I'm also doubting myself sometimes. This strange divide creates new, complex dilemmas for collaboration that don't seem to have good solutions. Maybe more on that another time…

Another Wayland compositor I looked at was @ifreund@hachyderm.io's https://isaacfreund.com/software/river/ which I learned about last #FOSDEM! River is "non-monolithic", which means that you can write your own window manager for it, and it will do the compositing for you. It also has deeply integrated multi-seat support, and even the simple "tinyrwm" examples I tried work pretty well with multiple seats! 🎉 So… I think it would be an excellent basis to write a new window manager with first-class multi-seat support!

But today, I had a good experience: I got in a small, warm pool and started practicing this. Carefully lowering my nose under water, while blowing bubbles from it. It was very uncomfortable at first, but after a few attempts, I noticed how I could stay in that submerged position a bit longer than before! So I realized that I probably *will* be able to learn this!! And that makes me super happy! :') It will be so cool once I can dive a bit! #swimming

To simplify setting up seats on #sway, I wrote a little TUI tool (in Rust) that gives you a big list of all your input devices, and you can then move them between seats using your arrow keys. https://codeberg.org/blinry/multi-seat-configurator

My current Wayland compositor of choice is @YaLTeR@mastodon.online's #niri! <3 It currently doesn't support multiple seats, but back in January I made a patched version for myself that adds a second seat! The next step would be to write a proper "seat manager". https://github.com/blinry/niri/tree/multi-seat

I still triggered my "out, now!" reflex a couple of times, especially when trying to go a bit deeper, and staying vertical. Gonna try practicing this every time I go swim! Also – turns out holding my breath, closing my eyes, pinching my nose with one hand, and then diving is not a problem at all. My fear seems to be specifically about water entering my nose. How did y'all learn how to do this?! :D #swimming

This is also motivated by search engines seeming to become worse these days… For some questions, it's maybe nicer to just ask a friend who might know the answer? Or to follow a trace of hyperlinks through the web from someone's website! That way, we might remember the answer better, as well. I'll set up https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/leechblock-ng/ on my laptop to block search engines, and configure my Android phone to use a bogus search engine by default. And download some programming language documentation.

All my life, I've been scared to put my face in the water. Swimming longer distances with my face above the water was not the problem, neither deep pools or lakes. But not being able the breathe, having water in my face, makes me panic. I have to swallow, and have to get up! I have some bad memories from swimming classes where I felt ashamed that I couldn't "keep up" with everyone else. :/ So learning front crawl or "proper" breast stroke seemed out of the question. #swimming

I'm trying to get the @teamtype@fosstodon.org – @hedgedoc@fosstodon.org bridge into a publishable state this week, to allow you to edit HedgeDoc documents using editors like Neovim and VS Code! I could use your help to decide which HedgeDoc versions we should support: Could you go to the main page of your favorite HedgeDoc instance, scroll to the bottom, and check which release is linked from the "Source Code" link? 🙏 (If you use multiple instances, feel free to check for all of them, the poll is multiple-choice.)

The technical background is that HedgeDoc updated their Socket.IO version from v2 to v4 in version 1.10.4 (released in December 2025). Because the bridge talks to that interface, this makes a difference. But at least one instance I'm using a lot still is on a lower version…

@dj3ei We have a "self-review" checklist in our PR template, which asks contributors to confirm that they have not used LLMs. I expect people to lie about this, though. Ultimately, there's no way we can be sure. But that doesn't mean we can't do our best to set our policy like we want.

@zweifeln@chaos.social Oh neat, props to you for having guarded lives! :) To clarify, do you always breathe out through your nose when underwater? Or sometimes also through the mouth? A book I've looked at is ambiguous about that. Rationally, I think that if your face points down underwater, water shouldn't really go into the nose anyway, if the "pressure matches"? But I'm not too sure about that.

Sad about LLMs
I discovered #tic80 (a retro-looking "fantasy console") around 2019. I enthusiastically used it, advocated for it, taught it to kids a lot, and contributed to the code. Three weeks ago, the maintainer started using LLM tools to review and write PRs, and seems to be using them for communication, as well. I actively avoid such communities. I'm so sad. It feels like losing something I loved. Does anyone know #creativecoding projects with a no-LLM contribution policy?
