@crystallord idk if this is still the case but I tinkered with matrix a while back potentially for camming/adult stuff, and during testing I made several chat rooms, whose private key I didn't save (thinking they were disposable/removable). It's turns out without the key there was no way to delete the room, even if you're the server admin.
So my idiocy aside, say you don't set up your permissions quite right and someone created a room you didn't want on the server, I'd have had no way to delete it other than nuke the server. Like wtf?

@crystallord yeah and they were quite insistent about not doing that. so what, someone sets up a channel i dont like on my server and i have to keep hosting it forever or risk trashing my server? nice idea but nope.
i ended up using a jitsi server (since jitsi provides the a/v calling for matrix anyway iirc) which worked pretty well (and even had screen sharing).

@momo so i suspect the way to do this is with variants as you have figured out. the addendum to that is that you have two "fill" patterns you can use as well.
(edit fill patterns with shift+auto-fill on, select pattern one or two with rotary), then assign fill 1 or 2 (or scatter) as the "auto fill" (hold auto-fill on, and step 14,15,16 light up flashing green, selected is steady) and you can copy a variation to one of the fill slots. then that will drop any time you hit "manual trig"(fill).
afaik the difference with that vs doing the same with variations is you can trigger a fill pattern partway thru the steps, where a variation which would only trigger at the start of each 16

@momo im actually forcing myself to use variations atm since normally i dont, but then get annoyed that i cant save my pattern in different states.
i dont really like prepared. breakdowns but must admit it actually worked pretty well. there i had "starting off" variant, "all guns blazing" variant and two breakdown variants with various beatskippery...and idk, im a little annoyed how well it worked.

@momo in practice it means you can start to introduce beatfuckery or start a buildup by adding in some 2, then more of that with 3, but then e.g take out the downbeat and switch to kicks on the off beat (preferably coordinate with my matching on-beat rides on ch 10), and that sets you up for a drop.
idk about anyone else but its something dave clarke used to do with switching downbeats to offbeats and then just when your head has got used to that (even tho its a little weird), then dropping back to the downbeat and omggg

Yes after all my complaining and musing and ranting and nearly buying the wrong decks I ended up putting in the grind work and now I'm pretty happy with that live setup and the end result produced on it.

This mix is 50 mins and goes all over the place. It starts off quite mellow and minimal, then gets a bit trancey (see, i do melodies sometimes!) and has some nice deep techno moments. But sure as the wind and tides, inevitably it all descends into wompy chaos and we are immersed in a world of noise. Because the noise is all that ever was.

@masek@infosec.exchange it's just a catchall address on a domain they own. there is no effort in making a "new" address, you just send it to somenewname@mydomain, hamsters@mydomain or whatever and it all gets forwarded to the same place.
ive also been doing this for 25yrs and the only downside so far is having to explain when salesperson at $company is like "oh wow your email address is $company@mydomain.com, what a coincidence!"

fedi hivemind: do any of y'all have a pair of *specifically* cdj1000s? im particularly interested in the playing off an sdcard aspect since that or usb would be my primary media source (I'm unlikely to start burning cds any time soon).
id like to be able to go from recording something live to djing with that recording with the least hassle possible.
are there any snags/gotchas with sd/usb playback or stuff the deck doesnt do as well as with cd?
I'm not interested in the later models with the fancy screens, automixing or any other horseshit, just old school decks, but plays off sd/usb.
i have a pair of numark axis 8s but they only read actual cds. if there was a way of converting them to use a different filesystem....well, that would be a thing but I suspect beyond my skills.

@momo i actually have. different way of doing breakdowns, namely the first 4 channels are all kicks. so:
1) is 4/4 on a 4-beat cycle (last:4), which means i can add in a beat here or there live and amend the base beat on the fly (rather than having to place 4+ notes its 1).
2) the same kick but on a 7beat pattern (last:7) with some scattered beats towards the downbeat. since it's on a 7 beat bar it cycles through the 4/4 in an interesting and "uh something's gonna happen here" sorta way.
3) same/similar kick but now on a 5 beat cycle (last:5) with beats towards the off beat. again with being an odd pattern length this cycles vs the 4/4 and channel 2.
4) same/similar kick, 4 or 8 beat length (last:4/8) but with beats on the offbeats

@momo not a great example but an example of that.. starts off with bass womp and kicks on ch1, brings in ch2 (7 step), and then ch3 (5 step), switch to ch4 only (and matching downbeat-rides on 10) which then means you have dum-tiss but on the offbeat, and drop back to downbeat (ch1-kick 4/4 and ch11 rides offbeat)
