He/him of Usenet fame, if Usenet can be said to have fame. Diverse interests that tend away from "new"ness. Non-fiction reader and art appreciator.

I probably won't follow back and will freely block accounts that look suspect.

Icon is from a "Signs of the Times" art project decorating traffic control boxes in Emeryville, California. Profile banner is my Dr Monocle character, a one-eyed spy using his small size for stealth.

Does anyone know what this kitchen implement is? It came with, and the glass matches other accessories of, a Hoosier Cabinet. (Genuine Hoosier brand, from 1920s.) It has about the same capacity as the spice jars, maybe 5cm diameter. The caps at both ends unscrew and both caps are open ended with an internal perforated metal filter. It seems too small to be a flour sifter, but it could be for dusting powdered sugar (somehow)

Seen in an "opportunity knocks" $160k real estate listing. Lots of notable things missing. «Bedrooms & bathrooms • Bedrooms: 0 Heating • None Cooling • None Appliances • Included: None • Laundry: None Features • Flooring: None • Windows: Storm Window(s) • Basement: Unfinished • Has fireplace: No» Well they were not kidding about "flooring: none." Looks like someone was trying to add a basement to a building previously lacking one

Macintosh System 7 was released 35 years ago this week (13 May 1991), meaning it is younger today than FORTRAN was when it came out (IBM's specifications paper, at least, was 35 ½ years old, published 10 November 1954)

@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems I kept waiting for it. Then I got to the last sentence. Separately. For people who understand UK real estate, am I reading correctly that this is a chance to "own" only 30% of a home, and then pay rent on the rest? Or is a property with multiple units, which this home represents 30% of the property? What good is owning but still paying rent? Or if the other way, why so awkwardly worded? Or is it some third thing?

Replying to
@utf_7@mastodon.social @fluffy@plush.city @whitequark@social.treehouse.systems I don't know what happens there or in tenancy in common. In a co-op, yes, you pay by percent owned. Even if you're on the second floor of a fourteen story building. And your insurance agent will ask when the roof was last replaced regardless of what floor you live on. (This quirk of co-ops is understandable, but other parts are much less pleasant, like board approval for your selling price and board screening of the new buyer.)

@fluffy@plush.city @whitequark@social.treehouse.systems I live in SF and have a vague understanding of TIC. And I grew up in NYC, where co-ops are a thing. I am, through inheritance, half owner with my sister of a co-op apartment. That has a monthly "maintenance" payment, but no "rent". (My daughter is currently living in it until we get probate finished to properly sell it. Because of ownership limbo, we can't vote for the board.) Neither TIC or co-op is something I'd choose for myself. Condo or outright ownership.
