mastodon 4.7.3Electrical engineer, musician, out and about on two wheels (bike or Vespa), I read a lot of books (aiming for about one per week, mostly SciFi, biographies, non-fiction), coffee-addict.
I may write about tech, music, retro, books... Currently trying my hands at blogging.
Fed up with the corporate internet, which is what brought me here.
Why 82MHz? Well I was born in 1982, and I studied electrical and telecommunications engineering, so the MHz is a nod to this :)

Can some #netbsd folks help me out? I'm trying to install it in a VM (first time I'm having a look at it). [Edit: I'm using Virtualbox]
I downloaded the current DVD iso.
I went through the installation, configured the hard disk, installed from DVD, and got to the config menu. I'm following this guide here:
https://www.netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-exinst.html#exinst-system-configuration
I configured my network device and verified in the shell that I could ping the outside world. I set a root password, set the correct timezone, selected /bin/sh as the root shell and now I'm at step e, "enable installation of binary packages".
I left all the defaults, entered "bash tree" as additional packages as shown in figure 3.37 and selected option x, "install pkgin and update package summary".
This then brings me to the state shown in the screenshot, where I'd expect something to be downloaded and configured, but nothing ever happens, it stays like this forever.
What do I do here? I've been following the instructions up until this point, but here I'm stuck...
[Edit] Giving up for now. The problem seems to be related to virtualbox assigning an IPv6 address to the VM and the installer not being happy about this...

There were also stories recently about smart TVs being used to scrap the web through the users internet connection...
https://blog.includesecurity.com/2026/06/the-smart-tv-in-your-livingroom-is-a-node-in-the-aiscraping-economy/
And I think we're going to see more of this in the future. The AI companies are learning that we're blocking their bots, so they're starting to use regular people's internet connected devices as trojan horses.

Another week, another company being shitty to their paying customers. I'm tired.
Thanks @geerlingguy@mastodon.social for calling them out.

I did not read this post, but by sheer coincidence I played around with open oscar server yesterday.
it's a fun thing, but I don't know who I would chat with. All my IRL friends don't care about any of this retro stuff..

That was a wild ride 😂
But who would have guessed this! Of course you just assume that the board comes working and correctly assembled from the factory... why wouldn't you.
Kudos for figuring this out, well done! 💪

PS2 emulation is fantastic!
I also had the OG Xbox with a modchip. I used it as a media player for years. One of the best purchases ever :)

Thanks Adam! These are great suggestions, and I usually do one of these things, consciously or unconsciously... but sometimes nothing comes to mind, and I decided that rather than trying to force something, it's also okay to just not have an intro every once in a while.

Maybe it's best to tidy up a bit before you get kicked out of the house 😉
But yes, that was super iconic! Emulating the Xbox is still not great, so you still need an original console if you want to play this system....

To be fair, English is also a relatively easy to learn language for a German. The other way round I think is much harder.

Thanks Anita for the kind words and for continuing to read my ramblings :)
I always loved English! I started learning it in 7th grade, 30 years ago... and I never stopped, I'm still learning. The first foreign language I learned was Latin, that's a very different story. I don't remember anything ;)

It's a 1:1 instant messenger, but it also offers chat rooms. It's a re-implementation of the old AIM/ICQ server and offers the same functionality, and that also had chat rooms.

Wuhuu!

PS2 emulation is awesome! I read your post about your machine, sounds like a ton of fun.
The Xbox was so moddable, it was great. I still have it, but I don't use it anymore... I have a modded Xbox 360 however and that's also amazing. And it plays many OG Xbox games too, so you alost have two consoles in one. Plus a whole bunch of emulators for older systems...
