Oddball, computer nerd, aspiring ecosystem co-creator, I've lead a strange and unlikely life. I dropped out of high school and was homeless for several years. During that time I learned Reiki, and how to operate and program Linux computers. I decided to get a job as a programmer, so I created a project and presented it at CodeCon 2004. That led to a career as a computer programmer. I'm now semi-retired and I've turned my attention to my other passion: gardening and ecology.

> The first ‘active’ greenhouse to be built, as was discovered by chance in 2001 in a historical document, was in 15th century AD Korea. On the basis of the surviving document, entitled ‘Growing Vegetables During Winter’, a reconstruction of the greenhouse was made, and it was found to combine traditional heating technology with sophisticated heat retention features and control of condensation.

What will the new ecologically harmonious economic/technological regime be like?
You spend way less time commuting, as most everything you need is nearby and you only need to work a couple of hours a week. Life is much simpler, but richer. You have lots of time to do... whatever. It's quiet because there aren't loud engines all over the place. Imagine a park next to a nice cafe and library, that kind of thing.
Remember that our problem now is not getting "enough" energy, it is that we use too much energy and are stewing in our own waste heat. We need to shine more. Literally. The amount of energy entering the system must be balanced by the amount of energy leaving the system or we will all die (sooner than we should, and taking much of the nice animals and plants with us!)
Carl Sagan on the greenhouse effect, 1985 (forty-one years ago kids):
We're all in this together. It's important to do right by each other. "Never give up, never surrender!"
> Always do right. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest.
~ Samuel Clemens

@tao@mathstodon.xyz on the cosmic distance ladder. A truly awesome review and discussion of how we know what's out there and where we are in the Universe. 🧠🔥

Sisyrinchium angustifolium(?), called Blue-Eyed Grass although it is purple and not a grass (it's in the Iris family), is in bloom right now. One of my very favorite plants, and it's all over. ❤️ 🌱

> My Stroke of Insight ... bestselling and award-winning book written by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a Harvard-trained neuroanatomist. In it, she tells of her experience in 1996 of having a stroke in her left hemisphere and how the human brain creates our perception of reality and includes tips about how Dr. Taylor rebuilt her own brain from the inside out.
At any given time over half of all programmers have had less than three years experience,
and it shows.
Nothing like downloading and installing GNU Image Manipulation Program over my phone's cellular wi-fi hotspot. Woooo!
I keep orbiting around the idea of a "Sim #Permaculture" app. It would be both a game and a useful garden/farm management tool.
I know of a few attempts to build something like that, but most of them stall eventually.
With that in mind, I figure you'd start by defining protocols and data models that could outlast any one particular project and support interoperability. (FarmOS publishes their data models on their website.)
we're back, I got nearly got heat stroke
but we're not giving up!
