This site has some options for work arounds, but the best one the registry edit can't be done on corporate machines.

@fluffy check them out on the BBB most legit businesses have a record there and you can file complaints if needed. Also could look up their license or bond number if they have one. (They should if they are legit)
You could also call the city they are based in to make sure they have a business license to operate.
If anything comes up sus you could call the police if they harass you, but sometimes it's better to pay them off so they go away. It's your call.

Even the potential good side where your toaster or refrigerator could have an update fail and break itself permanently without you even knowing it's broken until you try and use it again.
