@bazkie@beige.party I used to hate nineties as a kid, but in comparison… It wasn't even THAT bad 😏 2010s were cool, but on the other hand it's probably those years that are to blame for where we are today — something started going wrong, but everyone was too relaxed and chill to care.

@mage_of_dragons@mastodon.social @argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org Exactly! "M-m-mkay, I've been procrastipolling the keyboard all day 🥺" — who needs a slacker computer like that? Let the little guy get the job done!

@mage_of_dragons@mastodon.social @argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org Why? User interaction distracts the computers from doing really important things. We should seriously consider banning USB 😏

@mathiasverraes@mastodon.social In case with Fedi at-least-once delivery is also a problem at times… Oh, I see, it was supposed to be on the list, but never got delivered 😅

@a5oay5tuwtt0m423@shrimptest.0x0.st @NoFood4u@wetdry.world For real? I can vaguely remember something like that in ed2k software, there was also something called Vypress Chat that provided both P2P file transfers and serverless chatting on local networks — and it was quite popular until everyone realised that hosting an IRC server made more sense because they could have bots and other nice things. Bittorrent software on the other hand remained proudly unsociable — which is why I liked it at the time. Only now, having hosted a seedbox for years, I became more curious — when you seed something for a decade and it only gets downloaded once a year, you start wondering who that person might be 😅 So for me it's more of an acquired taste!

Central heating is gone and #cats do not seem to be enjoying it this cold #catuesday (4⁰C outside).

@matildalove@wetdry.world @Ninji@wuffs.org WebPee ][ does exist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebP#WebP_2 Likely even by Google standards it's too ugly to let it out of the labs, but instead of putting it down they decided to use it as test subject for further inhumane experiments.

@jake4480@c.im @ozzelot@mstdn.social @tante@tldr.nettime.org To be fair, the band might not be directly involved in making flyers and might turn out as shocked as we are 😆

@tombarkas@mas.to @bazkie@beige.party I know a lot of people who seem to believe that things were much better before they were born — and of course I think they are wrong about that 🤭 People soon forget about bad things and good ones — it's like listening to top 20 songs from a good chart, made by the one you trust, it makes you think that absolutely everything or at least almost everything was like that.

@light@noc.social @pork_soda@friendsofdesoto.social Most people don't get online to engage in any discussions at all — they just seek validation from the clique they consider their own, others seek evoking strong negative emotions in people they barely know, which is an even greater waste of time. But if those seeking validation choose to spend their time on interacting with the later, then they somehow deserve each other. Pinning a "sealion" label on someone on the other hand is the best of both worlds: you can keep holding opinions you can't even explain in your own words AND it somehow places you above the fray, which gives you additional warm and fuzzy feeling 😁

Oh my! I've been seriously underestimating the importance of NOT using a low-powered ARM machine from 20 years ago in conservative powersaving mode as proxy…

This is me connected to Squid over a SSH tunnel, which is then tunnelled to Luxembourg over Wireguard. But this machine isn't even my router, the router then wraps it in a tunnel that allows me using IPv6 with entry point in, I believe, Poland… And it's still not half bad!

@mirabilos@toot.mirbsd.org @KmacNessa@mastodon.social The book is rather disturbing, but it's not bad fiction. The main theme is whether ethical behaviour should be voluntary and how enforcing it through violence can twist one's mind. Stanley Kubrick brought it to screen and the film is rather popular. It's actually the movie that made me think it's the fourth derivative — I'm not certain, but I think that milk is never mentioned in it, the narrator says something about the drink coming in three varieties, but they omit the milk part that was present in the book. I don't remember it too well myself, it's been years, I have to re-watch it!

@prahou@merveilles.town @pita@bsd.cafe Okay, sent to my Epson LQ-100! Sorry everyone, I know it 1AM, but I just can't go against recommendations 😈

@oxyhyxo@bsd.cafe @lw@bsd.cafe There's also bottom/btm — https://github.com/ClementTsang/bottom It's in Rust, but otherwise a very nice resource monitoring tool. Bottom's widgets are scriptable and there is a keyboard shortcut to maximise any of them. Can't guarantee though that it would work with over 164 threads — I don't have such a machine to test it 😅

@samhenrigold@hachyderm.io A lot of stuff Apple gets bad rap for us like that. Remember that update that enabled more aggressive CPU throttling on old phones? A lot of people were like: "Apple is slowing down old phones to force you into biting new ones!!! 😱",— but no, it's not that, I have a phone that never got such an update, it has an old battery that can't hold the voltage steadily and when you start doing CPU-intense things, the phone may just shut off randomly — is that any better than being throttled? Don't think so! And this Antennagate always seemed a nothingburger to me, thanks for detailed explanation! Apple does a lot of bad things — but some of them are hardly as bad as people think of them and are just hard to fix PR disasters.

God damn it! Turns out VSCode adds COPilot as author to your commit messages by default! Ha-ha-ha-ha, it can't get any better than this! 🤣

The initial change – a pull request – altered VS Code's Git extension to add "Co-authored-by: Copilot" to commits that involved some level of AI assistance. This was done in VS Code 1.110 in early March. The settings change was intended to "[add] the trailer for all AI-generated code, including inline completions."
But developers said the AI authorship line got added even when not using Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant and when chat features had been disabled. And many expressed dissatisfaction with Microsoft activating the AI notice by default.

@mirabilos@toot.mirbsd.org @KmacNessa@mastodon.social Burgess' A Clockwork Orange had a drink named Moloko Plus that the protagonist often indulged himself in with his friends. The drink was basically milk spiked with stimulant drugs. I believe it inspired many real world drinks and cocktails not containing illicit substances. And the name "moloko" is transliteration of молоко — milk in Russian (and maybe other Slavic languages), A Clockwork Orange's NADSAT slang almost entirely consists of transliterated Russian words, even the word NADSAT itself means "teen" in Russian 😆

Eh, it's no longer Caturday? Who cares? He sure does NOT! 😼

#fediCats

@mirabilos@toot.mirbsd.org @KmacNessa@mastodon.social Oh, it could be third (or even fourth) derivative then. We might never learn the truth, but maybe the one naming the drink wanted a cool name for a drink that makes you feel energised and Clockwork Orange had just the thing, but they had no knowledge that original name was a reference to a Russian word that made milk an essential ingredient. That is how milk disappeared from the drink, but not from the name. You know, like anime characters that are inspired by heroes or legendary beasts from Western folklore — they might have a similar name, maybe possess a couple of traits, but otherwise be vastly different from their prototype 😁 Such an eclectic approach seemed shallow to me when I was younger, but now I think it's fun!

Damn, being a little late I just finished building old Firefox ESR — 115.34.0 for all my computers having different architectures… And they release 115.35.0! Today — not on the 24th like they always do!

Well, at least they are still releasing security patches for it, so nothing to complain about… But now I have to build it all again 😩

@inpc@go.mxtthxw.art I've been reading a lot recently that handing out flyers still does wonders when it comes to reaching people in the local scene. Like just going to some local gigs and handing them out — or maybe you can get some friends to help you promote your event this way.

@ozzelot@mstdn.social @Phosphenes@glasgow.social @AnarchoCatgirlism@cyberpunk.gay What if there never were any humans involved and Claude Code sent a copy of itself from the future and manipulated some local meatbags into marketing itself as useful product? 😱🤖

@hn100@social.lansky.name And you can pay human employees less if you start telling them they are going to get replaced with AI, so AI is still highly useful for cutting costs. Make them do more for less, what is not to like? AI revolution, woo-hoo! 🤠

@corpsmoderne@mamot.fr @sjolsen@tech.lgbt I sometimes do — because I usually already have half a reply that I intended to finish later, if I look at it later and don't feel like it, I remove the bookmark. So yep, it's indeed "shitpost later" 😁

So. Cloudflare challenges no longer work in Firefox 115 ESR, which is by the way still supported by Mozilla.

I'm not sure what's wrong, but just spoofing User-Agent header with newer version doesn't cut it. Their interactive troubleshooting page suggests disabling ResistFingerpring and HTML5 Canvas randomisation — yeah-yeah, "latest SECURITY features" 😏

Well, I suppose no more garbage web for me 🤷
There is still a viable migration path to Librewolf. It kinda works and a few versions ago they finally they enabled support for all the advanced features of JPEG XL — one of the main reasons why I use my own build of 115 ESR, patches enabling these advanced features exist for quite some time already, but they can't be applied cleanly to newer Firefox versions.

But at this point I simply don't want to switch — I got used to it! I have configured Librewolf to look and feel nearly identical to what I have now, but even the most tiny differences in behaviour annoy me a lot.

@dheadshot@mastodon.social Windows Phone was launched in 2010 and discontinued in 2015 when Windows 10 Mobile got introduced, which in turn was EoL'ed in 2020. Original iPhone got introduced in 2007, so it kinda "was there first" 😄 Are you not confusing it with earlier Windows Mobile/CE? I believe kernel of Windows Phone 7 was based on Windows CE, but otherwise they weren't compatible and had little in common. @benlockwood@ecoevo.social
