you could probably do that over there

@owashe@meow.social some clients (of them some likely by accident) allow you to use a sane chronological approach, and scroll up from the saved position, which I really like in Feditext

@geoffl@mastodon.me.uk Those 1024 byte sectors are plain CP/M boot stuff, but then it hands control off to something wild and untamed, a graphics-mode selection pane for ZX Spectrum tape images!

@ramsey@phpc.social if you live in NA and work in tech or some other industry with Salaries, you really cannot go wrong with Zojirushi, they are built to last decades (at home in Japan we still use the original Micom that my grandmother bought in 1984).
Another nice option is Yum-Asia. They have their own line of rice cookers, including inductive heating stuff, which are a lot, and I mean a lot, cheaper than Zojirushi, and are officially designed to cook a variety of other grains as well. I got a Yum-Asia Bamboo when I moved to Dublin for work, as you cannot get induction heating Zojirushi cookers in the EU, they are not certified and no models with 220-250V power supply units are available…

@agowa338@chaos.social it might be because I am not a programmer — since childhood I only ever dealt with hobby-tier stuff (Z80/8080/M680x0/PowerPC Assembler, Ada, C#, Rust) and as a linguistics major only had 2 years of mandatory C in the university
so git is inscrutable to me; I do not understand why is it git stash list but git branch --list, etc.

@technomancy my solution as a Firefox user, for websites like Dan's, is to press F9 (caveat: does not work for everything, but visibly improves a lot of stuff, and sometimes bypasses silly, JavaScript-based paywalls)

@swetland@chaos.social @mjg59@nondeterministic.computer at our consulate in StPetersburg where I was posted I had to deal with legal correspondence written in Russian sent from Japan in one of the more widely used Japanese encodings that included Cyrillic, and sometimes forward it to Russian speakers, who famously used… CP866 (DOS), Windows 1251 (Windows, duh), Mac Alternative (huh), KOI8-R (Linux, *UNIX, some Soviet mainframes), and ISO 8859-5 (UNIX, occasionally RTOS, some mainframes)
Then UTF-8's introduction led to the birth of the horror of ‘Windows 1251 or what have you’ in UTF-8 encapsulation in email, and the whole amazing clusterfuck with MySQL (software that didn't really care about encodings) that shipped with latin1 and Swedish collation as the default… and everyone and their sister just shoved non-Latin-1 text into that. (It worked until you wanted to mysqldump it. There were even worse cases, with triple encapsulation.)

@meena@cathode.church there is research that shows that degenerative BS usage does not result in statistically significant improvement to a software developer's performance (so when the developers themselves say they are 10%, 30%, 1000% more effective they are being extremely subjective and deluding themselves)
the same research (mostly done by the very companies that peddle this stuff) shows that more often than not it results in performance degradation

@FoxVK@mastodon.cloud @BeamMeOut@mastodon.social @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @catsalad@infosec.exchange the company that I work for is going to migrate from Sharepoint to Google Workspace, so Teams will be replaced by Meet, and I dread the day
because:
Teams (if you are not using 3rd party conferencing hardware) has absolutely epic noise cancellingTeams has automated captioning and transcripts that work really well (sure, it's not ideal, but it's great), and for someone with broken hearing like me this is a godsendTeams video calling just worksthe company is going to stay on Windows anyway and we cannot really do our jobs if we don't run Windows (I'm in localisation)
P. S. IRC is not better as a chat replacement for Teams because, by design, it has no persistence, zero fault tolerance, and no history playback unless you stick znc somewhere (and let's not mention media content)

@geoffl@mastodon.me.uk oh, and a random fact: I have DS/DD 80-track diskettes that are formatted in a peculiar way: the first track on each side is the standard 1024 byte sectors ×8 per track, but second track and on are 512 bytes ×16 instead.

@etam@im-in.space would still have been nice to see something wide enough to allow stress-free passing of two Dutch style bicycles (unless I’m really bad at approximating width)
Dublin has spots like that and even on my drop bar bike it’s always somewhat scary when someone is in oncoming lane, especially when it’s an MTB — people often ride close to the centre line instead of hugging the outer side :(

@geoffl@mastodon.me.uk oh, I'm sure 720 KB ones would have been fine, but these were all 1.44 MB HD stuff…
I still find it somewhat funny that for 5¼", IBM PC and compatibles are locked into 40/80 track dichotomy of incompatibility. My hand-made PC uses a TEAC FD-55FR and you cannot stick this drive in a PC because it does 80 tracks, but a typical HD PC drive will still read and even write (though not advised due to RPM) DS/DD 80-track diskettes from that PC, and if they're MSX-DOS formatted, DOS and Windows will read it fine.
But for imaging purposes I got a TEAC FD-55GFR and added a tiny flip switch for RPM selection ahaha…
