@BruceMirken@mas.to Now that they've convinced half the world to stop giving their kids vaccines, they need to find something else that is actually beneficial to blame with absolutely no evidence whatsoever.

@dyckron@cosocial.ca Of course, it has nothing to do with the fact that corporate growth now delivers basically no benefit to workers. . . .

@Lunalucardrose20@corteximplant.com When I was in high school, a friend commented that it took six cups of coffee for her to be fast enough and me to be slow enough to have a real conversation.

@sharazluke@mastodon.world If it had been Argentina, it would have been a goal. #WorldCup #ESPARG #Fedifc

I was talking with a doctor last week about my early fascination with #genetics (due to a documentary I saw decades ago about the search for the genetic basis of Huntington's). I said that if I had been scientifically minded, I would probably have pursued a career in genetics. The doctor said it could be argued that, by becoming a #genealogist, in a sense I did exactly that. Hadn't thought of it that way. I just ended up studying how genes are passed down rather than how they go wrong. #genealogy #geneadons #dna

@dave@autisticnomad.social I was once told that I probably *used to* have #ADHD, but now I'm just afraid to grow up. (This was by #MayoClinic, which has been successfully sued by various psychiatric patients for misdiagnosis. They might be brilliant in everything else, but in my experience, they simply view #neurodivergence as an excuse for laziness. Which is what everyone thought years ago before we knew better.) Oh, also apparently I didn't get along with my mother. They based that on my tendency to interrupt her - which, hello, is classic ADHD. Fortunately she didn't take their 'diagnosis' as truth and feel hurt.

@bloodaxe@fosstodon.org It also gives you some flexibility to accommodate for where everyone is mentally at the time.

Finally! This match was really hard to watch. But Spain deserved it - well done, Espana. #WorldCup #Fedifc

#Argentina 's goalie has been really good. #WorldCup #Fedifc

@bloodaxe@fosstodon.org My husband plays a variety of (non-video) games with several different groups of people, but his board-game group chooses 3-5 games each session, mixing longer, more complicated games with shorter, simpler ones. They sometimes discuss it beforehand, other times I think the host picks them. I've gone a couple of times and it's a lot of fun.

@adventure_tense@mapstodon.space It's so rewarding though. Learning about your ancestors, especially when you also learn about the places and times they lived in, gives you an actual link to human history; personally, I find it makes me feel more connected to humanity as a whole, rather than just being a modern-day atom, bouncing around with no real connection. I know that doesn't matter to everyone, but it's grounding for me.

@adventure_tense@mapstodon.space I keep all my trees private so that nobody can copy information without citing the sources or without nuance. I mostly ignore 'hints' - and completely ignore other family trees, except when looking at DNA matches (and even then, I don't believe what they say without confirming it for myself). It's convenient for working, because it does make finding leads easy: Links to Scotlands People aren't helpful as far as accessing the actual record (I go to Scotlands People for that), but sometimes it makes me aware of the fact that a record actually exists somewhere, so that I know to go looking.

@slims@famichiki.jp Yeah, I've wondered the same thing. Not enough of us watching the same games, probably. #Fedifc

@colin@mastodon.colincogle.name It helps that half of the opposing players in international games are teammates in league play. Or were at one time.

@MisophonicSpree@universeodon.com I'm not counting on it.

@DevWouter@mastodon.social No, I think it's the same thing. Every subculture (if you want to call it that) has its own social norms and expectations, and it's affronting when those are disregarded by anyone, for whatever reason, even if the person doing it doesn't mean any harm.

@darkuncle@infosec.exchange They're certainly memorable!

@vlrny@disabled.social Well done you. Brag away!

@afreytes@mastodon.gamedev.place Apparently you already follow me, so you already know that I respond to requests. :-) I can see how it would be frustrating when people don't, though.

@neilforreal.bsky.social There are a number of things that affect whether or not something is counted as offside, or whether it matters - some of them possibly legitimate, but others definitely referee preference. I have yet to figure it out, and I've been watching for years.

@ben@kwiecien.us I'm sure they'll figure something out. . . .

@goldgato@sfba.social When I was still in school and we'd just moved to Chicago, my dad used to take me to watch the Chicago Sting. I still have a badge/pin with the name on it. Good memories.

@darkuncle@infosec.exchange It's funny - people either love those or hate them.

@30yrdscreamer@mastodon.me.uk It seems to have got worse in the last few cups too - since VAR was supposed to solve these kinds of errors. It's really frustrating!

@30yrdscreamer@mastodon.me.uk I think they're just making them up at this point.

@Richboy50@woof.group Spain has been quite impressive throughout this tournament. They have incredible control.

@slims@famichiki.jp I'd watch a lot more (EPL & Bundesliga especially, though my preference is Scottish Premier League, which nobody else watches), but it's so expensive to subscribe to a sports channel that I can only justify it every four - or occasionally two - years.

@MisophonicSpree@universeodon.com @dm@polymaths.social @JoeWynne@mstdn.plus I must say, the Muppets were a nice touch.

@jpkeates@mastodon.social I don't know your wife, so I could be wrong, but when I ask my husband's opinion about this it's because I genuinely don't want to waste money on something that doesn't make me look my best. Which means I do actually want his opinion, good or bad.

@DevWouter@mastodon.social Like Trump himself. Every negative stereotype of USians has been proven correct by that horrible man. And, I suppose, every negative stereotype of FIFA has been proven by Infantino's infatuation with Trump.

@MisophonicSpree@universeodon.com @JoeWynne@mstdn.plus The World Cup never thought they were necessary. It used to be about two teams kicking a ball around. Americans find that boring, though, apparently.

@colin@mastodon.colincogle.name It's exactly like baseball (or any other major sport). Players are traded around by the owners of teams, so the people they play against this year might be their teammates next year. Which must be hard on them as individuals, because it must involve a lot of life disruption. But I'm sure it does contribute to camaraderie when they all gather at a major tournament.

@markhughes@mastodon.social It seems like international football is about athletes desperately competing with FIFA to actually play the game.

@PrivacyDigest@mas.to When I was a kid, they said it was caused by sugar and bad parenting.

@LALegault@newsie.social Is he actually *with* Trump? I didn't pick that up. Yeah, if so, he's keeping really bad company.

@sisypheheureux@mastodon-belgium.be @kuprijanko@mastodonsweden.se A vitally important job. Good for him.

@MisophonicSpree@universeodon.com @dm@polymaths.social @JoeWynne@mstdn.plus My husband and I have discussed this many times: What happened to US television entertainment? It used to be genuinely creative - I don't think it would be able to come up with the Muppets now.

@Mikeobiz@mastodon.social Lol!

@renata@cosocial.ca It's important for athletes to consider their future after the game. . . .

@mattmay@mstdn.social Lol.

I'm turning it off now because I just can't watch Trump insert himself into the Beautiful Game.

I've started using mind maps for tracking the progress of my various client cases. I've been using a spread sheet to keep track of where I am with them, but it doesn't quite work as an overview. I tend to think in hierarchical formats anyway, so I think this might be helpful. #genealogy #geneadons #productivity #organisation

@btp@fosstodon.org Hard to argue with that at this point.

@dm@polymaths.social I wonder if our magic t.v.s now keep track of how many people mute things. It would make me really happy if the US networks discovered that, quelle surprise, nobody wants this. #WorldCup

@justincox@social.lol Yeah, he was impressive. Overall, I think Argentina deserved to lose, but Martinez earned his keep, that's for sure.

@kmherkes@wandering.shop Hiya, Karen! How's you? I think the problem with genealogy is that in the past it tended to be old ladies mostly concerned with proving their own families' descent from royalty or whatever. So it used to be a lot more myth than fact. But at least within the wider field of history there seems to be more awareness now that some of us are actual historians, who use the same primary sources and the same research methodology that historians do (and some of us also have history degrees). Additionally, our knowledge of dna and what it can (and can't) tell us has meant many genealogists are now regularly called on as expert witnesses in criminal trials. So we're making progress! Some branches of history now consult with genealogists for micro-level data that they used to just look over, and I recently encountered a young man in the final stages of his history degree who wants to be a genealogist - that would never have happened thirty years ago.

@veronica@explains.social This is my policy when I post on someone else's blog or whatever. If I have a strong opinion, whether in agreement with theirs or otherwise, I state my view, and then I leave. I get notifications when people respond to me, but I never check back. I don't need to argue or be lectured.

@kcarr2015@mstdn.social Just like every other group of people, some of them probably become effectively multilingual, while others acquire a smattering of languages-spoken-badly. Some brains do languages, some don't.

I think Argentina should have just put their goalie on for this game. He's the one actually playing against Spain. #WorldCup #Fedifc #ESPARG

@wtfwtf_ok@hachyderm.io I'm not sure if it's funny or depressing that these tech people who have built empires on causing harm are so thin skinned.
