I grew up on Vancouver Island, and currently live with my spouse in Sonoma County. Enjoy a weekly hiking ritual to roam different regional parks. Re-calibrate by going north to YPL every year. :-)

Really enjoy my historical research & genealogy. Map various locations in QGIS that interest me, along with open source apps to organize and make sense of my projects.

Migrated from Apple to open source platforms a few + years back. QGIS, darktable, LibreOffice, Jellyfin, Tauon, and MANY others.

2/2 I think I'm going to export my family tree and just use GRAMPS (which I had already started doing as a backup), then start logging into actual heritage sites, like Scottish People, to do the heavy lifting. Yes, slower work, but no slop. #Genealogy #AiSlop #ScottishPeople #GRAMPS

Huh, my conspiracy theory would be that Netgear just agreed to give the US government backdoor access to all their routers.

Not sure I'd trust Netgear now.

I hope that people eventually figure out that most large companies have stopped asking permission. They know that their predatory business model is well defended.

@nileane We have millions of Epstein documents, pointing to a massive organization of "real" sex abusers, conducted by multi-billionaires who believe they are above the law, and California politicians are more concerned about locking down normie devices. This law is a distraction from Epstein, and to all the victims that deserve actual justice. Prosecute the billionaires and distribute their wealth back to society so parents can be parents again. #AgeVerification #Surveillance

A classic album by Harold Budd and Brian Eno (1980). This one has always stayed in my collection.

Features a map detail, which had an influence with my artwork back in the 80's.

Okay. Clearly back to the drawing board. I've been trying to create an open source replacement for our AppleTV, using Linux. Running Jellyfin is pretty great. But running Netflix as a web app is pretty miserable (given time). Maybe it's Firefox, or maybe web-apps are just not doable with our current geo-politics. I'll regroup and try a different setup configuration. Anyone got a suggestion? Signed, A frustrated and sad old man. #DeApple #DeGoogle #OpenSource

Bazzite is really awesome. Even as a daily driver.

I'm testing it out and really grooving to it. An immutable OS is very compelling for certain use cases. Bazzar manages Flatpaks quite nicely. I've been running GNOME, but am going to try out KDE next.

@hn100@social.lansky.name One problem is that business efficiency is always defined by how many people are not required. Not by the results of good management and sustainability. We will "invest" in equipment, but investing in people is considered waste. We view people like we did the redwoods, a resource of intelligence to exploit until we use it up, then move on. Corporations can never replace a community. There is none. Just extraction.

@lmgenealogy@mstdn.ca Thanks for the feedback. I got started researching my dad's family after he passed away. He was adopted, and I ended up finding his living brother and an assortment of cousins living in Ontario. That was a thrill, and we stay in touch. So the initial purpose was going back a few generations just to get a sense of who the family is. And that is very direct. Something happens when one goes back farther. It takes a different discipline that I'm working out.

@fdroidorg @marcprux I hope that Google changes its mind, but as a shareholder company, they aren't a community. So I don't hold out too much hope. But what I do hope is that AOSP eventually forks from Google, and other Open source mobile OS's start growing their market share away from Google. Its time for these options to go mainstream. We need F-Droid to be there for this. Eventually we need an OpenAPK standard to build around that is not reliant on Google.

Well, my NEC monitor finally gave up today (a known issue where the screen goes permanently green).

It was a great HDPI wide-gamut monitor I've had for ten plus years. 🥹 I had two at one time, but the other one gave up a few years ago, for same issue.

Back when I used Macs, I would use SpectraView II to calibrate them. With Linux I would use DisplayCal.

Since NEC was bought by Sharp, and they exited the monitor market, this was my last NEC monitor. Kind of a sad tech moment.

Kind of hard to believe that after our ever increasing cost of living (energy, tariffs, unchecked corporate greed), that people are going to then spend more using AI? Which is yet ANOTHER subscription.

Are we wising up yet to how little we get for buying a phone and subscribing to things we can only rent for the month?

About a year ago (May '25), I was at the top of Helm Craig, looking down on Grasmere. We were staying at the Lancrigg Hotel for a few nights.

I can't express how much I want to return there. I clearly underestimated how many days we should have stayed there. Can one be homesick for a place you don't live in?

I'm not sure if it's a rational feeling, but I could certainly take a few months to hike as many fells as I could.
