A study combining 103 bat genomes with 44 fossils places the probable origin of bats in Europe about 65 million years ago. It also suggests powered flight and laryngeal echolocation arose before modern bat families diversified, although the earliest transitional fossils remain missing.

Watching an symposia on #AI use in #Genetics and #Genomics. At least one person is using corporate LLMs to power their platform to understand SNP-disease associations.
I asked if the corporate model use is ethical or do we need ethical models for research use (I mean I don't want them anyway, but that's another thing).
Person's answer sums to: I wouldn't say that LLMs are from intellectual theft. It was scraped from the open web so it's ethical.
Oh. Sweet child.

Hello,
I’m Tarvo, a geneticist by training who somehow ended up spending most of his working life at the intersection of medicine, data, hospital IT and digitalisation.
These days, my scientific work often means helping clinicians make sense of their data, while my day job is increasingly about preparing a hospital for a future in which AI will simply be part of medicine — whether institutions are ready for it or not.
I joined FediScience because I miss thoughtful scientific conversation. I’m particularly interested in AI, medicine, genetics, statistics, mathematics, open science and the wonderfully messy question of how we actually integrate new technology into real-world healthcare.
I’m here to learn, exchange ideas, occasionally ask stupid questions, and hopefully contribute something useful in return. Say hello — recommendations for interesting people to follow are very welcome.

Geneticists altered Alfie and Bailey’s DNA so that they don't produce a major allergen. However, canines like them are not currently commercially available, and some experts express ethical concerns…

this is where #ManifestDestiny kicks in, as the other side of the blanqueamiento coin.

An international study of more than 600 childhood tumours identified mutation patterns linked to specific cancer treatments, sometimes within 91 days. The findings may support earlier monitoring of resistant disease, but they do not show that chemotherapy causes every relapse or provide a clinical test yet.

I was talking with a doctor last week about my early fascination with #genetics (due to a documentary I saw decades ago about the search for the genetic basis of Huntington's). I said that if I had been scientifically minded, I would probably have pursued a career in genetics. The doctor said it could be argued that, by becoming a #genealogist, in a sense I did exactly that. Hadn't thought of it that way. I just ended up studying how genes are passed down rather than how they go wrong. #genealogy #geneadons #dna
🧬 The embryo doesn't start female. It starts undecided.
The bipotential gonad sits on a razor's edge for two weeks before a single gene on the Y chromosome tips the balance. And female development? It's not a passive default — it's an active genetic program that must continuously repress the male pathway throughout life.
