@nixCraft@mastodon.social This is such transparent BS. If I pick up a hammer and throw it towards a row of parked cars, and then it hits & breaks a windshield, I don't get to claim "rogue hammer went out of control and attacked a car".

They guard the wealthiest companies on earth, and still can’t pay rent. #workers #unions #labor #SiliconValley #strike https://rollingout.com/2026/09/19/california-security-guard-strike-14000/

@QasimRashid@mastodon.social We're talking about Flock putting its cameras to use with the express intention of rape. Hunting down a woman (or any human) because you desire to forcibly control her body is attempted rape. Regardless if the person attempting it carries a badge.

@BenjaminHCCarr@hachyderm.io Before the LLM craze took over, we actually had fairly decent speech to text, though not perfect. Imagine where we might be now if all that "AI" money had focused on improving useful deterministic programs like that, instead of on "how can we trick and deceive people on the largest scale possible".

@MaddieM4@raphus.social @huntingdon@mstdn.social @nswigger@mstdn.party I still remember taking Econ 101 in college and being shocked by 1) how easy it was and 2) how obviously fake (disconnected from reality) the models were.

@climatenewsnow@mastodon.social Guess they didn't get the Softbank memo. River was not valued. Datacenters do not make datacenters.

@ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk Here is California there is an effort by State legislators to end something called the "water's edge" loophole, which allows multinational corporations to avoid state taxes by pretending that their profits made here were actually made in some other country which offers tax havens for corps. I am not sure if Palantir has grabbed onto this loophole, but it wouldn't surprise me. They certainly make a lot of profits in CA. https://calbudgetcenter.org/resources/waters-edge-closing-californias-largest-corporate-tax-loophole/

@LauraleeDukeshire @ives @sundogplanets I'm a woman and I do this all the time. In my work I'm frequently meeting people for the first time and I'm unsure how much info they have on the subject of the meeting. So often my first question is just what you said: "are you familiar with X, or would it help if I gave some background?" It works!

@futurebird Species keys were how I learned to id plants & bugs as a kid! Here's a page from one for butterflies: (a simple one, goes just to the family level).

@DeliaChristina@sfba.social George Floyd is on their list. Satire is dead and buried.

@alterelefant@mastodontech.de Yeah, but I bet the very wealthy will emerge unscathed & leave the rest of us stuck with the horrible economic and social mess they've created. They have already been trying to force pension and index funds to purchase their stocks so they can offload the risk.

@CStamp@mastodon.social @heidilifeldman@mastodon.social Yeah. Alcoholism (if he actually has it) is a genuinely terrible disease to deal with. But alcoholism can't make you anti-Semitic.

@cR0w@infosec.exchange It's like if a gas main blew up, destroying all the buildings on the block, and the utility company said "omg the gas escaped containment! All by itself!" And then the media ran breathless stories about this amazing 'new' gas and its capabilities. And then investors said, "wow that gas is super powerful, I better fund it."

@Plumbert @scalzi "This reads like the mea culpa section of a RCA written by a junior dev who is hoping (in vain) to not get fired" --- ding ding ding! The AI program is just a pattern matching code. It doesn't "know" it made a mistake bc it doesn't "know" anything. When given prompts that match training patterns of language when someone royally fucked up, it returns language matching the patterns of someone defending themselves after they have royally fucked up. The article, unfortunately, continues to personify the AI program by using language that pretends it has comprehension and intentions.

@MicroSFF Sounds like the crow helped them escape ICE terrorists.

@inthehands@hachyderm.io @DMTomas@mastodon.social @Retreival9096@hachyderm.io For me the sound of the writing almost always matters, though to different extents. That's not to say I disagree... maybe more that I think compelling writing is always a little bit poetry?

@jack@xeno.glyphpress.com @Infrogmation@mastodon.online But the "disable your ad blocker" prompts are lying. I do not block ads. Your website can show me ads with no problems. What I block is spying on me and stealing from me.

@markwyner Yes, and for more reasons than the obvious. I have a device I use often that works perfectly except for the "e" key. I get around this by having an "e" copied and ready to paste. Except on those g-d- sites where it doesn't work. (And yeah, I can use onscreen keyboard or an external keyboard if I have to, but when I'm doing something on the fly, I don't want to. And I *really* don't want to replace the device. It works how I want, and it doesn't shove excrement-generating "AI" features down my throat.)

@theleftistlawyer Sigh, I'm sorry you had to deal with that. People really need to understand that GenAI is a parrot! It spits out patterns based on how humans have responded to similar words in other contexts. It does not understand what you asked, and it has no capacity for discerning whether the pattern response it gave is true or appropriate. So it makes perfect sense that a genAI program given a legal Q as a prompt might give a response that says it's it covered by attorney -client privilege. It's just parroting.

@gimulnautti@mastodon.green @gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green The only winning move is not to play.

@FuturisticRobert@infosec.exchange @cmconseils@mastodon.social Actually, it's a wall. (ducks for cover)

@dev@discuss.systems From this point forward, every public hearing on how we must give away all our resources to "AI" should be replaced by the crowd just chanting: "Goose was not valued! Eggs do not lay eggs!"

@Nonilex@masto.ai The majority of Supreme Court justices are now openly working to destroy the United States of America.

@Edmonds_Scanner@universeodon.com for the 77% who do have wings, can you please tell me how? No matter what I try, mine just won't grow in.

@floppyplopper @aparrish UR i 0a

@DeliaChristina@sfba.social Deciding to use a poorly designed computer program instead of a translator -- and thus believing that actual human communication has no meaning or value -- was the eff-up.

@KrissyKat@hoosier.social Horrifying. But this is all part of rape culture. Convincing people the only way to feel good about yourself is by exercising power and control to force your feelings onto other people's bodies.

@cwebber@social.coop Well, one thing AI can do as well as humans is write content-free gibberish like, "That means we have to be intentional in how we architect our company for the agentic AI era in order to supercharge..."

@joelvanderwerf @futurebird Alas, I didn't learn as much about rocks and minerals. All I can remember now is that you should never take schist for granite.

@skykiss The URL geauxvote.gov doesn't appear to work. Looks like it is http://geauxvote.com/

@Lana@beige.party also how many of those with "criminal records" had already served their sentences? Maybe all of them??

@andrew Good comments, thanks. I'm not sure about this bit though: "We’re buying physical, digital, and economic assets and betting they’ll pay off eventually." At least in the incentives I've seen, we (the public/local governments) do not end up owning any of those assets. Which is a big part of the problem with development subsidies generally.

@frak YES PLEASE.

@chartier@toot.cafe As a former Floridian, I call BS. A REAL Florida woman would not have pulled this stunt in a piddly little mall fountain. No, she'd launch in a canal with an army of Muscovy ducks at her back. Alligators be damned.

@anderseknert twist: the correct code is 'below2'.

@Willow@chaosfem.tw I am cis but have been increasingly losing patience for online forms that require a gendered salutation (Mr or Ms). If they don't have Mx. or 'no response ' as an option I will just say I am a Dr.

@mattblaze One of the Bay Area's community foundations just put out this statement: "Why SFF Stands with the Southern Poverty Law Center". (And yes they administer DAFs.) https://sff.org/why-sff-stands-with-southern-poverty-law-center/

@u0421793 @futurebird Yes. Or getting humans to do that labor for no pay.

@medieval_illuminations@mastodon.social I never would have imagined "hellmouths" to look so...cute?

@cmconseils Yeah and...if this was supposed to show how hard you work, it just shows you lack awareness of other people (like your childcare provider). At least in the US, most wage earners do not get an hour for lunch plus a 30 minute "snack break". Here in CA - which has relatively strong labor laws -- you get 30 minutes unpaid lunch, and 10 minute breaks. IF your company is even following labor laws.

@molly0xfff Thank you for this vital work! Curious if you have data on crypto contributions to CA Governor's race?

@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it @gabrielesvelto@mas.to @kinou@lgbtqia.space well, but an LLM does not have "behavior" as a property. It is just programmed to match particular patterns of words. I think that's related to the distinction the OP is making.

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social Thank you for posting! This is is one of the most insightful analyses I've seen on AI psychosis.

@jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io I think this comic is evergreen: https://xkcd.com/1357/

@cigitalgem@sigmoid.social @monokeros@tech.lgbt @evacide@hachyderm.io In this case it's easy. Grammarly is actually using the names & identities of well-known writers & editors without their permission.
