Business groups are warning John Healey against raising the minimum wage too far; but we've heard such warnings so often & the disaster they proclaim doesn't come to pass Better if business leaders showed some *actual* leadership & limited top managers' pay too (or better, commit to a lower multiple between staff & managers' pay). There may be a point where the minimum wage does have the effects warned of, but right now its the manager who cried wolf! #workers #inequality #politics h/t FT

Thank you, Mayor Mamdani! "DoorDash to pay $131M for underpaying delivery workers in New York City" https://apnews.com/article/doordash-nyc-delivery-zohran-mamdani-4429800e7bf1b0ba28e064340b857df0 "The agreement, which officials described as the largest worker settlement in city history, also requires the company to submit to a new monitoring system to ensure compliance with delivery worker pay laws in the city." #USA #NewYork #DoorDash #Delivery #Workers

After Next has established (in the courts) that discrimination between warehouse & shop-floor staff is based on market 'realities' (or workers' employment priorities) not gender, its likely a good time to review the continuing range of the gender pay difference across the UK. Perhaps the most notable thing is that financial services & a range of professions remain the worst performers on equalising gender pay... so is this because women don't *want* to join the professions? #workers #women

The commitment of Universities UK to offer *all* students work experience during their degree programme by 2035 (half by 2030), seems like a good response to the concern among employers that graduates lack work experience.... But hold on, recent data shows that the majority of students already have to work while doing their degree to cover their costs.... so, this then starts to look a bit more like free labour under the guise of employability? #universities #workers #politics h/t FT

Happy #LaborDay! "Conservative Democratic President Grover Cleveland was one of those concerned that a labor holiday on May 1 would [...] strengthen socialist and anarchist movements that backed the May 1 commemoration around the globe. In 1887, he publicly supported the September Labor Day holiday as a less inflammatory alternative [...]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Day#Labor_Day_versus_May_Day "The ruling class did not want to have a very active labor force connected internationally." https://www.npr.org/2022/04/30/1095729592/what-is-may-day-history #LaborDay #workers #WorkerSolidarity #history

As the share of US national income flowing to employees continues to decline (stoking inequality), Abiel Reinhart (JPMorgan) observes: 'Regardless of what measure you look at, workers, in terms of employee compensation, have been receiving an increasingly small share of national income over time... And the flip side of that is: where is that income going? It’s got to go somewhere. And a good chunk of it is showing up in corporate profit margins'. #inequality #politics #USPol #workers h/t FT

Stuart Neilson (LinkedIn) points out the social hypocrisy that confronts people in their 50s & 60s: Their state pension age is receding into the late 60s, while employers seem to regard them, too often, as too old to work. Either we reverse the moves in pension age (lowering back towards the early 60s) or we move much more significantly to combat ageism in the labour market. But we cannot in good faith as a society combine a high pension age & ageism! #workers #employment #ageism

Its a popular rhetoric of business representatives that extending better conditions to workers reduces economic activity (increases unemployment); our political class often repeat this argument; But, 35 years (up to 2018) of labour market research across Europe offers no support for this conclusion; revealing it to be once more about managers seeking maintain their power dynamic over workers. Andy Burnham should (must) resist such rhetoric. #workers #politicshttps://blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpolicy/andy-burnham-should-make-the-case-for-good-work/

In Aberdeen (and elsewhere) workers are yelling 'how many more jobs must be lost' before the UK Govt. acts (although its not like the oil sector has been out of favour for long). But what of academic staff shouting the same about universities? Our political class gives a lot more weight to workers in industry (who claim the Govt. can help) than those in universities (whose plight is directly related to Govt. funding decisions). The value of universities is still obscured! #politics #workers

As Sarah O'Connor (FT) points out when we think about the future of specific jobs/professions (in the face of technological change) we need to factor in what she calls "anticipatory obsolescence' - the tendency of your people to look at the prospective future & shape their educational paths on that basis; thinking a certain job has no future reduces the incentive to train for it & in a sense becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as skilled practitioners decline.... #workers #skills #education

"Some doctors are pushing to organize the 10,000 attending physicians within the University of California system, setting in motion what could become the largest union of employed physicians, organizers say. Factors driving the organization effort include hiring freezes, increasing patient loads, long hours, and clinician burnout..." https://www.medpagetoday.com/publichealthpolicy/workforce/122364 #heathcare #physicians #workers #labor #unions #organizing #california
