@maxleibman It’s all driven from the American desire that everything needs to be fair for individuals, never taking into account the population as a whole

@mountainwitch@kolektiva.social When my son was born 10 years ago this was our exact experience in the Netherlands too. It’s wild that you’d have to worry about money at a time like this. Childbirth is stressful enough as it is

@mainframed767 @paco It’s even worse: the price at the pump is based on the expected future price, not the actual current price but only when the future price is expected to be higher. Otherwise it’s like you said: it’s a complicated system. It’s not. It’s highway robbery

@monkeyborg that’s true in the sense that statistic probability tells you Madame Fortuna is sometimes right. The problem is when you start making life choices based on those predictions

@_thegeoff@mastodon.social I love it when young people come up independently with things that are already known. I just hope there's always someone around to point that out to them. Otherwise we get idiots like you know who inventing trains again

@rmattila74 Thank you for making this available for free. I have a long time fascination with nuclear safety as my father was best friends with the guy that was responsible for this in the Netherlands. Their conversations about safety are a big reason why I became an engineer myself.

@dalias @sarahjamielewis True but this happens a lot too in non FOSS environments. You have to really hope you have a product owner who thinks about whether the new feature is actually useful

@sarahjamielewis I fear that part of the reason for this is the developer mindset. They see a new problem that they can solve so they start working on it without thinking if they should build this in the first place.

@tanquist @timnitGebru 100% this. I see it everywhere now and it’s so tiring. I’m not surprised though. Con men tactics work very well after all

@reiddragon@fedi.catto.garden @reillypascal@hachyderm.io I know. I feel exactly the same way. It’s just so frustrating to realize that even vim isn’t immune to this

@reiddragon@fedi.catto.garden @reillypascal@hachyderm.io that’s my feeling too from everything I know about him but yeah, probably shouldn’t have said it exactly like that. It’s just so frustrating to see more and more people just kinda give up and do things that will turn out badly

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social This was first mentioned as a probable outcome ages ago and was the main reason I didn’t get a cloud connected doorbell. Mine just saves to my own hard drive and that’s it

@_thegeoff@mastodon.social @ShaulaEvans@zirk.us When I was young I got very excited once when I came up with a sorting algorithm. Until a more senior dev looked at it and said: great, you invented bubble sort 😂 This is btw exactly what’s happening in tech over and over, made worse by LLM’s so now everyone can reinvent something 🙄
