Composer and audio programmer in Rochester, NY | Lecturer in music tech and film/game scoring at SUNY Geneseo

For music, I use Max/MSP, Tidal Cycles/SuperCollider, and Lilypond, as well as writing for acoustic instruments, and I like to mix glitchy, noisy, microtonal sounds with “cheesy” retro synths

For audio programming, I use C++/JUCE, Rust, and C; I made my IndieWeb-style website with 11ty; and I like Neovim

I also like fountain pens, analog photography, and TTRPGs

I've been using Lilypond to write musical notation with code, and here I write about how to get a convenient, smooth experience while writing that code in Neovim!

I'm definitely planning to stick with this, and I'll be writing about some more fun things to do with Lilypond soon.

Friendly Lilypond with Neovim & Audacity

I made a nice setup to write Lilypond scores in Neovim, while still being able to conveniently view and listen to them

I'm looking for recs on C/C++ package managers, especially Conan vs. vcpkg!

TL;DR: in a vacuum, vcpkg looks nice, but it's made by Microsoft, and the repository has the "a user you've blocked..." warning (i.e., it has Claude contributions).

My main question: is vcpkg nice enough/is the behavior by its maintainers good enough that people would recommend it over Conan?

Some of the details I've heard about the two:

I've heard people mention that vcpkg has a higher learning curve but ultimately "just works", and that Conan can be a bit more fiddly. I've also noticed that many of the comparisons I've seen are pre-Conan 2, whereas now version 2 seems pretty stable.

For anti-monopoly reasons, I like that Conan doesn't have one centralized list of packages, but I also hear that can make it harder to have reproducible builds.

Lilypond question: Lilypond is much nicer to engrave in than Dorico/MuseScore, but the latter two are much nicer for composing (e.g., when I need to quickly insert/re-order things), at least with my current Lilypond knowledge. Does anyone have suggestions on inserting/re-ordering material in Lilypond, or should I just do Dorico -> MusicXML -> musicxml2ly? #Lilypond #Composer #ClassicalMusic #ContemporaryClassical #Notation #Engraving #MuseScore #Dorico

I've seen Substack claim that they're important for growing your readership, and it's nice to see people leaving and disproving that

Of course I would prefer people left because of the Nazis alone, but a win is a win I guess

I'm learning Tidal Cycles, and it turns out it's pretty easy to get cool J Dilla-style microtiming effects:

@reiddragon it's been very depressing especially since I did the trick of blocking the Claude/Cursor/Copilot/etc. accounts on GitHub so that it shows me “a user you blocked has contributed to this repository.” I regularly see that alert for things I care about, and I don't think it's possible to have the tools I want to have and completely avoid using AI-generated code.

@jonny@neuromatch.social I don't think I've seen _quite_ this version, but I definitely see “the left needs to advocate for ethical, leftism-compatible AI,” and I'm deeply tired of that position.

@sean_ae @Cognessence @oscillik @elifyalvac @Rushup_Dee I really like Vektroid's (of OG vaporwave fame) “Seed & Synthetic Earth” album, e.g.: https://vektroid.bandcamp.com/track/moebius-blue It's not *quite* GM sounds — it sounds very evocative of them, while being a bit cleaner and more interesting than pure GM sounds. As far as age, I am squarely millennial (33 y/o).

@TheLastOfHisName this isn't specific to French, but what I usually do is find a textbook that looks good and get it from Anna's Archive. These URLs do a good job of keeping an updated list of mirrors: https://open-slum.org/ and https://open-slum.pages.dev/ Usually the publisher will have the accompanying audio files available for free.

@ross@social.rossabaker.com I had to look it up, but sounds like a cool program. This is also reminding me that there was another popular score writer from the era called SCORE (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCORE_(software)) Kind of esoteric syntax, but I hear people really liked it and stuck with it long after it was discontinued. I would definitely go for it with Lilypond! It really is fun, and it's a GNU project, so integration with Emacs is quite good, and you can extend it with Scheme/Guile.

@ho@sonomu.club thanks for the tips! For the note names, I ended up switching to that out of necessity — I was setting up 8th/quarter tones (https://codeberg.org/reillypascal/forget/src/branch/main/include/eighth-quarter-tones.ly) and I didn't want to try researching what 8th tones “should” be in Dutch.

For the transposition, is there a difference between typing e.g., \fixed c' and using \transpose? I had been trying out \fixed plus a reference octave.
