I like the quote from one of Jack Dorsey's employees after being told they have to start using AI: "If it actually worked we'd be using it already."

I like #OpenSource and #NonProfit so I signed up to see what would happen.
I dabble in #C++, #VBA, #StereoPhotography, and #Drawing.
I live near Stillwater, Minnesota, USA.

When I need to buy a car I'll find a used "dumb" EV.

I've heard this idiotic phrase at almost every conference I've attended: "I know you can't read this but..."

Mine too. I don't know if the jail breaking problem has to do with wanting internet access. I keep mine in airplane mode. I add books by connecting it with a cable to a computer running Calibre.

Disappointing news. I am so tired of seemingly intelligent people parroting AI hype.

I will never buy a computer with a copilot key. FYI there are tons of super awesome used & refurbished pre-AI computers out there at pretty decent prices.

Those sites will have to get by without me. I'm de-googled.

I've kept my paperwhite in airplane mode for over 10 years to make sure Amazon doesn't mess with it. It works great. I can still put new non-DRM ebooks and PDFs on it with Calibre. I bet there's lots of used ones for sale.

Congratulations! The audio book is engaging and informative. I also bought the hardcover to use as a reference. They are well worth the price!

How timely. After weeks of tearing my hair out trying to deal with confusing and non-functonal aspects of the new Outlook, my supervisor asked me why I don't just use Outlook (classic). I replaced my shortcuts today and it's going much better. Windows 11 still sucks, though.

Holy cow! CryptPad is amazing. The link opened the document on my phone and I was able to add a comment.
A while ago I put some simple spreadsheets in my CryptPad account as a test, but I'm going to explore more of its capabilities.

My employer has started a committee to determine its AI policy. The person in charge emailed everyone a page of regurgitated "AI hype" (as defined by Bender & Hanna in The AI Con). She also included, as an aside, a list of concerns other employees and I have already sent to the committee. Currently people ask me to create applications rather than fix their slop. I'll take your story as a warning to be on my guard. Thank you.

It would be so ironic if big tech's bottom line were negatively impacted by misinformation.

I'll definitely watch for this if I need to buy something new. Years ago, when Dell still had a decent extended warranty, they sent a technician to my home to install a new motherboard because one of my USB ports stopped working.

Before you buy a new computer, do a web search for used ones with linux ubuntu or mint pre-installed. It's a pretty painless intro to Linux computing.

I've seen a couple of these. I wonder if some are AI bots. The questions are so simplistic, and a short response prompts another simplistic question. I tried a friendly but very wordy, rambling response with no useful information and it never contacted me again.

Crap. I don't have a website. You'll just have to take my word for it. I'm me.

HERE WeGo did a great job of getting me around Bochum, Germany on foot, bicycle and public transit last summer. I never use the company formerly known as "not evil".
It works on my LineageOS phone but I can't get it to connect to voice without signing in to google. Fortunately Organic Maps does a great job with driving directions and it uses RHVoice from F-Droid.

Maybe that's why our IT department didn't bother to require bitlocker encryption on storage devices I plug into my new PC (actually, I think it was just an oversight).
Anyway it makes my job easier because I occasionally need to exchange data with really old applications on an unconnected XP laptop which can't run bitlocker.
