Political and tech - On the political side, there is arrogance and ignorance, on the geek side there is naivety and over- complexity

Does anyone else find the emptiness of #deathcult advertising becoming increasingly transparent?
The endless promises of happiness through consumption feel harder to believe when lived reality points in the opposite direction. More branding, more distraction, less substance.
Maybe people are finally seeing through it?
We waste each other's time far too much. If there is going to be any #HOPE, we need to stop falling into #stupidindividualism and start working together.
This is not complicated. It's a basic #KISS principle: respect each other's time, build trust, and get on with the work.
Four years ago I said: the #deathcult was becoming #mainstreaming.
Today it's much harder to deny. The cracks are visible, in politics, economics, culture and #climatechaos.
That's the bad news.
The good news? Once you recognise the mess, you can step away from it. That's where change begins.
Decentralised servers - what we now call the #Fediverse - are often talked about as if they’re some new, radical innovation. They’re not, they’re a return to the original design of the network. The early internet wasn’t built to be controlled. It was built to survive. The core idea was simple: if parts of the network were destroyed - even something as extreme as a nuclear strike - the rest would keep functioning. No centre. No single point of failure. No “off switch.”

Stop burning out alone, the number of good people burning out right now is not accidental. It’s what happens when systemic problems are framed as personal responsibility.
Collective infrastructure is weak and crisis is constant. No one can carry that alone, and no one should try.
The solution isn’t heroic effort, it’s shared architecture. In #FOSS terms: if the system keeps crashing, stop blaming the users. Redesign the stack, that’s the composting we actually need to do.
First we stop feeding the #deathcult.
Then we compost the piles of #techshit we've accumulated.
From that fertile soil, we nurture small, resilient commons that can survive and grow through #climatechaos.
The spirit of #KISS: don't wait for the perfect revolution - start cultivating the ground where something better can take root.
Today there are a lot of dishonest people - it’s become the default. Finding someone who is actually truthful is rare.

The core point is straightforward: large groups of people don’t act randomly. They cluster around shared assumptions, about power, about trust, about how the world works. To understand the social/tech #hashtags https://hamishcampbell.com/to-understand-the-social-tech-hashtags/

What looks, from a distance, like a marginal issue is in central, a question of whether #Oxford remains a living city, or becomes more controlled, polished and diminished. What we’re growing at #OxfordBoaters is simple https://hamishcampbell.com/what-were-growing-at-oxfordboaters-is-simple/
Stopped going to in-person general tech conferences around 15 years ago - they’d become beyond pointless. Since then, I’ve stuck to more focused online events.
Now heading back to an in-person one. Curious what I’ll actually find.
I have a feeling it’ll be about 75% pointless, 20% narrow geek, academic and #NGO-focused (slightly useful), and maybe 5% - probably less - actually useful.
Let’s see how that shifts after the event.
A river that needs crossing political and tech – On the political side, there is arrogance and ignorance, on the geek side there is naivety and over complexity

All code is ideology solidified into action – most contemporary code is capitalism, this is hardly a surprise if you think about this for a moment. Yes you can try and act on any ideology on top of this code but the outcome and assumptions are preprogramed… cant find any good links on this.
Keeping the bridge in place isn’t an act of charity; it’s a basic #KISS survival strategy. How #mainstreaming funds grassroots movements, they get their value from https://hamishcampbell.com/how-mainstreaming-can-meaningfully-fund-grassroots-movements-they-get-the-value-from/
