small-time fedi trainwreck personality & long-abiding fedi development attempter. been here since 2017 and haven't accomplished a damn thing besides making friends :)

I used to work in 9-5 software engineering but found it wasn't for me, and then life took me on a ride. I'm still on that ride, and now trying to reboot as an indie developer.

@mos_8502@studio8502.ca yeah, I'm almost certainly gonna end up losing some contacts I've been peacefully shooting the shit with for years on here, simply because I don't believe the base technology itself is inherently evil. I probably already have. also, I wonder how many people mad about the copyright angle spent the last 10, 20, 30 years pirating media hand over fist. but that's different.

@kyle_pegasus @soc @zzt @rootwyrm last year I started deliberately choosing the non-GTK or at least non-Gnomified app whenever there's a viable choice; this year I'll start migrating server installs to Devuan as it comes time to replace them for whatever reason; and I'll start experimenting with BSD to hedge my bets. but this is exhausting and I don't have time or energy to spare.

I did have a good chat with the Wafrn guy about why the OG tumblr UX is important (its emergent effects) though.

@mackaj@mastodon.me.uk @Npars01@mstdn.social I apologize for being snarky, this is one of the few political issues which still has the power to rile me up. my threat model is the government itself. for me, ZKP doesn't solve the problem that my identity will be tied to whatever account I use to exercise my right to speak. even if the platform can't get it, the government can, and that's 100% unacceptable to me. but yes, it does appear to solve the issue of every platform complying with this bullshit storing identity data.

can anyone comment on how good, or not good, search (for posts) is between self-hosted fedi platform apps good for single-user servers, such as #Snac2, #Mitra, #GoToSocial, #Bonfire, etc? I am looking for search which is actually usable by someone who wishes to find things and perhaps sort what's found, unlike that provided by e.g. Mastodon, Akkoma, etc.

@mcdanlj that little kerfuffle over the attitude was one of the later straws in the pile which ultimately broke this camel's back; I already didn't use GNOME except when I can't avoid it, but now I've started making an effort to drop apps with GNOMEified UI and GTK apps in general in favor of others where there's an equivalent available. if I'm gonna be contributing in any way (such as bug reports), I want my contribution to go toward building a healthy non-GNOME, non-GTK ecosystem.

@carnage4life@mas.to this is why any approach I take to using genAI will rely solely on local models, even if I have to rent a machine hourly to run them if my hardware can't do it. I will not subject myself to rugpulls from the type of scumbags which run genAI megacorps. in fact this is also a major reason why I do nearly everything with open source software. I don't have the cognitive bandwidth to deal with pointless capitalist rugpulls even if I wanted to.

@apps @HolosSocial relay support would be one way to support laptops. if you spend the effort to build a desktop release, ideally it should support both relay and direct operation for 3 modes of connection: relay, direct (with port forwards), and direct (reverse proxy)

@smolwaffle I'm using teabags because it's less exhausting than waiting for the tea and dealing with the strainer after, but:

  • I'm really exhausted most of the time

  • the teabags go in the compost so it's fine

  • I buy them in boxes of I think 500 so at least it's not as expensive as it could be

@hmm_cook I'm just hoping I succeed in figuring out how to make it work while lowkey homeless (as in, I'm under a roof but I meet the government definition of homelessness bc I'm not self-supporting wrt housing) and thus not able to meet my sensory requirements, before I end up outdoors again. I've been trying to claw my way out of this hole for about 8 years now after initially stabilizing from my total life implosion by ~2018. I'm doing better than I was but it's not enough.

I quite enjoy fireworks, at least until I'm chronically unable to meet my basic sensory needs, and then I intimately understand the people who hate them for noise/surprise reasons.

@hmm_cook one of my closest friends is ASD level 2 and has sensory sensitivities that make mine look like a walk in the park. she's completely dependent on family, if something happened to them she would be totally hosed. I'm not sure if I have a point, other than that civilization has a LONG way to go so that people on the spectrum can meet their full potential, and that it can be hard to the point of taking decades (or impossible) to pivot once you're already in moderate to severe burnout :/

@hmm_cook in other words, your video is a good & valuable reframe, but depending on what business one is in, a certain minimum level of consistency may be required in order to viably self-support in said business. and it's very possible to get stuck in scenarios where that's not possible due to one or another limitation plus having inadequate support, sometimes for many years. I know too many people on the spectrum who are living some version of this, myself included.

@smolwaffle I'm sold on switching to loose leaf in the future when life is a bit more conducive, I sometimes watch a cat for a guy who has big jars of good loose leaf tea and it's definitely better than anything available in tea bags. currently my consumption is more out of desperation for caffeine + having stepped down from coffee so the quality is a bit less important 😅
