Honestly.. at first i was surprised (and disappointed) at some major Linux distributions not having a clear answer to age verification laws after weeks of their announcement, but then lots of them started discussing them. really! discussing them! what's there to be discussed?

"maybe we can implement age checks in a privacy respecting manner? 👉👈"

And it's just so happens this serves the corporation that you work for best interests! Big tech "Foss devs" have a clear conflict of interest here

Dylan "I read the law and I'm here to implement it" M. Tylor gets up in the morning and decides to write age verification code that he himself calls "hilariously pointless and ineffective", within a week strikes 4 repos of his list, and i bet the Linux Kernel is going to be next (I'm joking... mostly) It's worth noting that the first people who approved the PR on systemd repo are big tech employees - Mircoslop and Redhat/IBM (why I'm i not surprised!!), someone then opened a revert PR, Lennart Poettering (systemd creator) closed it.. thus blocking the removal And this is why you now have Liberated Systemd, a fork of systemd without Age verification.. which IS 'hilariously pointless and ineffective' at saving children when engineers starts reading the law like a specification, this is what you get.. useful idiots. #ageverification #authoritarianism #SaveTheChildren #thinkofthechildren #epstein #surveillance #bigtech #government #privacy #anonymity #humanrights #FreeSoftware #freespeech #ubuntu #linux #fedora #arch #archlinux #agelesslinux #artix #whonix #tails #systemd #opensource #openknowledge #openaccess #cyberlaw #infosec

Did you know that #systemd already has `emailAddress`, `realName`, and `location` fields? but they where never meant for home users, only enterprise workflows, so adding `birthDate field` isn't really much work, and you could see why systemd doesn't consider that bloat

And this is exactly why systemd is bloated because it doesn't consider lots of things to be bloat in the first place

It's never a good idea to rely on software that serves corporations best interests, because corporations care about profit not principles, #FOSS principles.

Not just Ageless Linux.. shoutout to @artixlinux@fosstodon.org for sticking to the free & open source software principles, I'm making the switch very very soon (to #artix :artix: )

we're living in a time where our current actions dictate what things would be like for the future generations, if you think a local checkbox (are you above 18?) is harmless, you should know that it's not about the checkbox!

things become much worse when you comply, next thing: VPNs, next: take a guess! you get the idea

After 90 days we *may* not see Session on our app stores again :(

Indeed from outside STF seem like a pretty strong foundation with a plan lied out and everything, but the reality says a different story.. Session is on life support

@session@mastodon.social is asking for a community investment of 1million dollars, which i would say is alot considering the short period of time they have left, but not alot considering the size of operations that they have

> the STF has received approximately $65,000 in donations. This is enough to maintain critical Session infrastructure for the next 90 days. We are extremely grateful for the support Session has received from the community, but unfortunately this is not sufficient to retain full-time developers. As a result, all paid staff and developers will have their final working day on April 9, 2026. After this date, some team members will continue on a primarily volunteer basis to help maintain Session until July 8, 2026.

> If the fundraising is successful, the foundation would be able to continue active development of Session, including launching Session Pro and Session Protocol v2.

> If it is unsuccessful, the lack of funding would mean the foundation is not able to support Session in any capacity and will need to be shut down. As a result, Session would be removed from the app stores, and critical infrastructure like the Session file server, push notification server and seed nodes will go offline.

Session plans to donate the rest of the money to the @eff@mastodon.social in case this fundraising campaign turns out to be unsuccessful

> We also want to assure you that if the STF is unable to secure funding sufficient enough to meet its goals within the next 90 days, any donations that cannot be used in accordance with the STF's constitution will be publicly donated to the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

No, you stand NEXT TO YOUR FRIEND AND YOU CALL YOUR OTHER FRIENDS, to put the bully in their place Linux distros need to stick together and not make it easy for the surveillance state, because it won't stop there.. if the FOSS community doesn't fight back no one will, not MacOS users, not Gamers, certainly not winslop users..

@fosserytech I tried #vendefoulwolf #budgie edition live mode to test it out, it's what you would expect from a Devuan based distros: No WiFi ooftb xD, also it's been a while since I tried budgie, it had like many redundant software, two settings apps, two or maybe 3 file managers.. I was so lost.. no welcome screen! (I'm I not welcomed?) It needs a lot of work, can't say I'll recommend to a beginner but.. I'll install it for them It's main selling point to me is that it doesn't use the cursed (happy to comply) Systemd

@PeterSoukup@mastodon.social @artixlinux@fosstodon.org Because this law is not so apparently abusive as the previous laws, many projects are willing to accept it, because "it's not a big deal" but this just the first cut of the thousands of cuts to come, in order to kill #privacy If I say, would you rather have me punch you in the face or spit on you shoes? the last one doesn't seem so bad compared to the first, but i would say they're equally bad, the government only shows you option A and B, they don't show you options C, D and E. privacy has always been under attack, this is just a slightly different tactic, the excuse is the same (save the children), it's a subtle tactic. speaking of #systemd https://mementomori.social/@levi/116291559554853388

Replying to
@fosserytech that's a good analogy, although that's not the plan, the plan is to ban laws that try to associate IDs with hardware, once and for all, if we don't aim for that... then playing this cat and mouse game will only result in having one winner and it won't be us I don't see laws as.. they're made for me (I'm a none coder cypherpunk - code is law -), laws are made for them, they're the ones who should follow them first.. what I was pointing to is that the FOSS community see it the other way around (which explains their compliance)

@fosserytech yes, they don't understand how FOSS works, but they don't care.. "saving the children" is BS excuse to restrict information, once it's enforced on the OS level, next will be the browser level, then the app level, then your favorite app store level, then suddenly all websites and services will query that information from your browser, OS,, whatever.. and if it doesn't provide that information... well sorry we can't verify your age so you can't enter (and you're an adult!!)

so it's pointless to go about it with this approach, "if only we can make them understand, then they'll spare us FOSS users!"

they won't stop, they'll keep coming back using the same excuse.. they'll go after the normies that use centralized services (Windows and MacOS) and they'll achieve the same result eventually, Linux will implement AV so we can see content, so we need to cut the crap, once and for all, we need to be firm in our stances and say no is a no

i mean you can of course do what every content creator says that you write a letter to authorities and express your disagreement, but they will push it through anyways because they want full control over us

I completely agree

lastly, I didn't say delay.. I meant not complying at all, we already know who's gonna comply don't we? It's the soulless big tech corpos that don't stand for anything, but we can turn this into a both civil liberties and human rights court case at the same time, we do this right thru disobedience, we'll end it ("sAvE tHe CHildReN") once and for all.

@fosserytech first question is for you: why are you already considering your options like the gods have spoken and we have to comply with something that goes against one of our core values in the FOSS world: privacy? second question is for all the foss projects who i feel should grow a spine and not hide behind blog and social media posts.. why are you in such a hurry to comply? deadline is in Jan 1st 2027! and projects are already considering how to implement what should be considered: spyware!

@benjamineskola No, they don't! there's plenty of things to complain about and people have made whole websites on the matter. what I was getting at is Age verification and the fact that some contributors to systemd are in favor of that, mainly because they want Linux to be compliant, so corporations keep using it.. doesn't that serve corporate interest and go against FOSS principles? Also, I don't see any Age verification mechanisms discussed on passwd, which makes me think we have different definitions on what is "bloat"?(something to be expected)
